2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

About the only thing I can say about tonight's game is: Boy, it's sure good to have Jen Schoullis back. :D It really doesn't appear like she's missed a step, much less an entire season. She's going to have to step up with Westy gone for a month :( and she was even more important tonight with Kessel and Schleper sitting out the exhibition for precautionary reasons.

Quite a comeback tonight. Glad to see it happen. Hopefully (a) we don't need that to happen when the games count, and (b) when we do need it, it does. ;)

I'm off to Michigan tomorrow on a trip to go hold my new niece (and so my parents can hold their new granddaughter). Unfortunately it means missing the Wayne State game and at least the first of the UND games :o . I'll be keeping in touch with all the goings-on while I'm traveling.

First I've heard that West will be out for maybe a month? That is very disappointing news indeed. Can you shed some light on the nature of her injury?

Hopefully Kessel and Schleper will be back for tomorrow's game? I'm very pleasantly surprised that the Gophs were able to squeak out a win against the Whitecaps tonight with those 3 players out - shows some very good depth.

West got injured in the last minute of the second game at Clarkson. Not sure the exact nature of the injury... speculation is her right knee. According to another source more inside than I am, the initial evaluation had her out for the rest of the season, but it has been improved since then.

Yes, word is that Kessel and Schleper will be dressed against Wayne State.

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Wendel-Pohl listed in the program but obviously not yet ready to play. I didn't see her in the building.

The game?

Hanlon was very good.

Thunstrom was very good.

Always a pleasure to see Potter play.

Allie Sanchez!

But the star of the game WAS Schoullis.

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Is it too soon to use the term "phenom" to describe Ms. Kessel? :D

Wasn't there... sounds like it was close... but it's another 'W'. Woo-hoo! :)

And how about our goaltending... three games that count -- three shutouts.

Box score

First Star: Amanda Kessel (Minnesota)
Second Star: Delayne Brian (Wayne State)
Third Star: Noora Räty (Minnesota)
From the collegehockeystats box. I can certainly see Amanda Kessel as first star with the games only goal...another beauty, but I think I would have voted Brian first star if I had a vote...she played a great game.

A little close for comfort...Gophs need to start converting on some of the many chances they do generate with their solid play in the O zone.

Very unfortunate to lose another key player to injury as Megan Bozek struggled off the ice and did not return. Thought it was a pretty blatant trip that went uncalled on the play as well. Hope it's not serious and she's back ASAP. Team's getting banged up early as a few others are known to be playing with nagging injuries.

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Gophers today displayed again that they are a great skating team, very fast, exciting to watch.

Somewhere along the line they are going to have to figure out a few more ways to get the puck in the net.

Weekend note: Friday against the Whitecaps they played without 3 of their very best with West, Schlepper and Kessel watching from section 11.

Today with West in section 14 they again were without 2 of their very best after a first period incident in which Bozek crashed heavily into the boards. She went to the locker room and did not return.

You have to play with what you have but being without some of your top players has an effect.

Agree 100%, Brian was the difference maker in this game. Other than a few sporadic moments, the Gophers controlled play throughout, but Brian kept it close to the very end.

Again totally agree. Based on puck possession and the number of good scoring opportunities, it was more like a 5-1 game. And when Brian did give them some open net or a juicy rebound, the Gophers misfired. They will need to start converting because they won't get nearly as many great scoring chances against the nation's top teams.

Sure hope No. 19 is OK. You never know the extent of an injury when a player goes heavily, unprotected, into the boards. She's obviously a real key to the D and also adds so much to the O. Not a good sign that she did not return after this happened.

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

P.S. Have to give credit to the Wayne State coaches and their game plan. Despite lots of forechecking pressure and puck possession by the Gophers' forwards, Wayne State played a tight box in front of Brian and gave up very few close-in scoring opportunities...Gophers need to work on how to capitalize against this defensive strategy.

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

From my Rep: Is this supposed to be some sort of relevant analogy that justifies disparaging remarks towards opponents players...a practice long typical of UMD fans. Every D-I coach would welcome Mo & Jo to their team. Your friend, brookyone

Really? Really? Do you think Frost would welcome them back to the Gophers? Because from what I can tell, Minnesota got screwed. Mo & Jo showed up only because the Sioux weren't good enough yet for their standards and for their goals of making it to the US Team. Once they got what they needed out of Frost, who probably busted his butt to make them better players, they were outta there. What's a shame to me is where is the love for the rest of the team that's been with the program thru thick and thin? The superstars show up and they're chopped liver? So no, I don't agree with your statement.

Also, way to lump all UMD fans into the same pot. Way too easy. I thought you had more in ya than that.

Oh yay. I love it when personal spats are made public...

*back to my personal bubble*

I think you're going too far with this, questioning their motives and accusing them of intentionally using Frost as if there was some kind of a scheme to get noticed nationally (as if they weren't already). While as a Gopher fan I was very disappointed to see them leave after just one year, I respect their decision, knowing the family history and their strong connection to North Dakota. So I'm inclined to believe they simply had a change of heart and decided to return to their home in Grand Forks, knowing they would be welcomed back with open arms.

That's all in the past now, but I'll go out on a limb and say it just might give both teams a "little extra" motivation this coming weekend.

There are two UMD fans that post in this forum I wouldn't include in the pot you speak of. In case you're wondering, you're not one of them.

Tell me again how the former pres George Bush analogy clarifies the appropriateness of your disparaging remarks towards Monique & Jocelyne Lamoureux. I never noticed...did Dubbya have rainbows and unicorns flying out his butt too?

P.S. I think Frost has recovered from "getting screwed."

As I understood the discussion, the initial question was regarding the Lams' ability, as in, are they as good as advertised or overrated. Frost definitely welcomed them to the Gophers out of Shattuck; there was no question in his mind regarding their talent. At this point, both parties have moved on, but the sisters' talent remains.

Ya that Brooky...he's smooth. Creeping around these boards, sending everybody his stupid little notes of wisdom whilst negative repping. Doesn't have the stones to say it out where everybody can see it. So completely arrogant that he thinks he can get away with it then....Snap!

Not even Arlan can save him on this one....

Save me from what? What does Arlan have to do with anything? You keep dropping his name likes it's some sort of threat...rather strange, but that fits the source all right. I actually think it's a good idea to address the comments I find disagreeable in private. I think that's what the approval / disapproval rep feature was created for. There are certainly times when I'm going to use it. Just as I often do for posts I like. If you don't like that Metcalf you can complain to the administration about the feature in general...or shove it. Just a couple options.
