2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Gophers really came to play tonight and, after a bit of a shaky start and surrendering the first goal to UMD, they responded very strong and were able to control the play for long stretches of the game. Congratulations to the entire team on a tremendous effort! And come back tomorrow and beat those Badgers!

Any thoughts on the team's play yesterday? IMO, that was Noora's best postseason performance as a Gopher, and up and down the lineup, people showed up and gave a good account of themselves. The mountain now gets steeper, but players come to the WCHA to play with and against the best, and hey, what do you know ... tonight's schedule offers up the best.

Beating the Bulldogs: Sweet.

Beating the Bulldogs when they are without their best player? Well . . . . ., still sweet, actually.

Checking the Pairwise this morning I see the possibility that UMD might travel to Cornell for next week's quarter-final. A rematch of last year's national championship game would be a spicy first rounder.

The play that I'll remember for a while is the two on one that resulted in the Gophers' fourth and final goal. The little saucer pass that Schoullis gave Kessel, lofted over the defenders stick and then landing totally flat in the absolutely perfect place for Kessel to one time it in with authority, was a thing of beauty. About as pretty of an assist as you'll ever see.

UMD continued to attack, and the game got more intense and a little nasty as the third period went on, with considerable contact. "I'm proud of how oour team worked, for maybe 50 of the 60 minutes," said UMD coach Miller. "The only thing I was disappointed was at running our goaltender three times.. Yes, they called it once, with three minutes left, but it's supposed to be a major if you run the goalie in the crease."

There are obviously a lot of people who are critical to this team's success. Noora and many of the forwards are evident by the numbers that they put up, but we don't spend a lot of time talking about the defensemen. For example, let's look at Megan Bozek. She was named to the All-WCHA 3rd team, so she isn't exactly toiling in anonymity. However, I think she easily could have been placed on the second team. The 2nd team D are both converted forwards, Wong and Lamoureux-Kolls, and the latter put up most of her points as a forward.

Bozek leads the team in +/- at +35; her usual playing partner Kelly Seeler is second at +28. Bozek's value also shows up when looking at the team's performance. She was knocked out of the Wayne St game when she was tripped and slid heavily into the boards while UM was up 1-0. She did not return to the game, the Gophers held on to win by the same score, but did not look good in doing so. She spent much of the next week on crutches, played vs UND but clearly was less than 100%, and the team suffered two of their three home losses. Bozek did not dress for the first game in Bemidji, and the team looked lethargic in losing their only game of the season to a team outside of the top ten. She was back the next day, and the team played much better. The D rotation always looks a lot stronger when #19 is firing on all cylinders.

Sweet and Dandy!

Agree...it was a thing of beauty.

This!

It's always something, isn't it. I suppose offering any kind of congratulations to the other team would asking too much.

I feel bad though...I had hoped Shannon would enjoy her short stay in Minneapolis. Seriously, it's unfortunate for their fans they likely won't get a NCAA tournament game in their new arena.

Minnesota will have its hands full with the Badgers, who come in with a 10-game winning streak and are unbeaten (13-0-2) since a 3-1 loss to UMD on Nov. 28.

"The beauty of our team is we've got so much depth, so if one line isn't scoring, another line is," said Knight, who leads the nation with 46 goals but was held to an assist in Friday's 3-0 victory over North Dakota.
Truer words were never spoken. A monumental task at hand attempting to best the Badgers in the final. A huge effort will be needed from the entire squad for a shot. In addition to their offensive prowess it appeared the Badgers have tightened the screws defensively as well. Rigsby Looked very solid vs. UND.

GO GOPHERS!

In all fairness, all we read was what was published. She might've congratulated Minnesota at some point during the press conference. She generally does, believe it or not.

What WCHA press conference would that be? Must be in some parallel universe.
