2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

There was a press conference, all right, just not a lot of congratulating.

Aren't they called "news" conferences these days? How many of the people there use a printing press and how many don't? <g>

I'll take your word for it. I wasn't sitting in the room when they held the press conference, so I didn't hear what everyone said.

Though it may go down as an "L", I love how hard our kids played. Good luck in the tournament Gophs, no matter where the bracket may lead you.

The beauty of our language -- once a word comes into use, it is retained long after the original meaning is gone. Just as ships that have never had a mast set sail or a motion picture shot in digital is called a film, even radio and television personnel can be press.

And hockey jerseys are called sweaters...

I missed the comments made by ARM relative to the+/- stats of the Bozec/ Seeler combo. The only negative to these stats are that they don't take into account who they are playing against, ie.others may be playing against the 1st line more. The same applies to the forwards, as the 9,10,11 line ,have higher plus/minuss than the 1st line, I believe.

I fully agree that +/- leaves a lot to be desired as a measure of how effective a player is, not only because the caliber of opponents faced varies, but so do the offensive and defensive capabilities of the players skating with you. Over the course of a season, both a 1st or 2nd forward line or defensive pair will be out a lot against both the first and second line of other teams. I do think that when a player has the top number on the team, it is safe to conclude that they are contributing to the team's success. Regarding the 9/10/11 +/-, I think that the Schoullis line has a higher aggregate. However, I have been impressed by how conscious both Davis and Terry are of their defensive responsibilities as young players.

Right you are ARM, the 1st line had a combined +72 compared to a +67 for the 9,10,11 line overall ,with the latter having the edge 54 to 47 in conference play.

Good luck at BC Gophers! Clip the wings on them Eagles!

I keep checking, but the complete lack of attention given GWH and their NCAA tournament quest by the Strib and Pioneer Press is despicable!
I am pretty sure we can expect a couple of sentences in the "notes" feature in the Pioneer Press on Saturday (but not before). The big city rag will probably do a complete paragraph, but again, not until Saturday.

Meanwhile, wall to wall coverage of boys hockey and reams of copy about the endlessly mediocre Gopher men.

Is this a good place to start the Maturi countdown?

They've largely ignored the team while they've been playing here, so I'm not surprised that they do so now that their home schedule is done.

When have the fish wraps ever give the team ink? I remember the two title run seasons that they played #4 to both basketball teams and men's hockey. I think women's basketball made the Final 4, men's didn't make the Sweet 16 and men's hockey made the tournament and the the media attention the team got was getting off the bus at Ridder with the trophy. Some things never change.

Hey that's my other team, and they ARE playing a lot better lately!

What I don't like is all the pub they've given the basketball teams; both genders have been huge disappointments, not to mention BB is very boring.
