2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Wouldn't throwing to first, where there was a force play, be a tad more routine? Just a thought.

I agree with you. It was a great play by Jeter. Of course it's only a great play because of Punto's mistake so it wasn't spectacular or anything.

9 straight playoff losses and nary a win against the Yankees all year. I hate to say it but I did say a while ago that maybe the division title is all we should hope for and I'm glad they at least did that.

There was no force at first due to that when the ball got to Jeter, Span was already turning around and heading back to first with his infield hit. Punto and the 3B coach were the only two guys in the building that thought it might get up the middle. Base coach can't be half way home trying to make up his mind. He has to be anchoring Punto to the base. Screaming at him. This wasn't a throw coming in from center where you have time, it was a throw from Jeter behind second.

That said it really didn't matter. I suspect Rivera doesn't give up that hit to Cuddy if there are two outs and a man on third in the 8th. Even if the Twins did tie it, I don't honestly think it changes the outcome of the game let alone the series.

Don't think it much matters where Ulger is standing if Punto has his head down trying to soak up his last experience running the Metrodome base paths. This play was even worse than the Gomez play. Like Gomez, once he realized he was toast, he could have at least gotten in a run down, and let Span get to second. With all of Nick's good play the last month, I guess he needed a play to balance things out.

Thanks to the Twins. The last month was way more fun than I'd ever have expected. Mauer showed himself to be more clutch than in past big games, which was nice to see. I feel sorry for Kubel, but it seems on every postseason roster there is at least one big bat that is dreadful (like Hrbek in '91.) In a short series, it doesn't have time to balance out like it does during the season. I wasn't surprised that Blackburn had a strong start after last year vs Chicago, but Pavano was better than I'd have guessed. Had we seen Baker against CC today ... somehow I don't think that's the ticket to an even series.

It was good awareness of Punto being an idiot, yes.

In the Matt LeCroy VIP section?

Probably...I always felt when the Dome had those "all You Can Eat" sections for games they should call it the "Matt Lecroy Supersized Section" :d

Pretty sure the replays show Ullger with the stop sign up. Punto thought it went through, and he had his head down. Punto messed it up, and no one else.

Jeter is an amazing player, there is no doubt. But isn't it any fielder's job once he gets the ball to check the runners? No play at first, obviously going to look to third. You can even see his eyes get all wide when he realizes how effing stupid Punto is.

First of all, Mahay and Rouche had nothing to do with any of it so I hope you were just adding them in to make a list of all the players. In fact I hope they cut Rouche...like tonight. (Mahay can stay he was fine) Second, Cabrera was the move Mauer, Morneau and Nathan demanded...hell when the Twins were in Oakland they were telling him they were going to get him on the team. Sorry but I am not going to give Billy credit just because he did what the faces of the franchise made him do.

Pavano I will give him all the credit for he turned out to be super value.

He will be judged by the failures he had and what he does this offseason. He better make moves that improve the squad or it wont just be a website that Little Willy has to worry about. :p

RAUCH.

Rauch had a 1.72 ERA in 15.2 innings with 14 Ks and a 1.213 WHIP. He pitched very well for the Twins.

Thanks. I was about to be the jerk that started doing this, but now you are instead. :D
I wasn't going to say anything about bigblue changing the a to an o (it's not an unexpected typo), but then Handy added an e for who knows what reason. :)

They both helped a lot. Before they were added, guys like Guerrier, Crane, and Mijares were being run out there twice every 3 days. A deeper BP is a better BP. I like the moves made because we didn't give up much, and nothing was traded off the major league roster.

I haven't been a big fan of Smith, but he did well this year. And get used to Rauch, because he's the one guy they added who is under contract for next season.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

All of a sudden we care about the spelling of players names...since when?

And I didnt say they pitched bad just dont think they had anything to do with the team winning like implied. (as in I think the Twins win with the bullpen they had previous to their arrival) Nowhere in my "inane postings" did I say either of them were terrible although if you are going to use stats you could at least show that in the 54 innings previous to his arrival here this season Rauch had a 4.41 ERA which is much closer to his career ERA (3.79) than the 15 innings he pitched for the Twins. (we will leave out his 3 playoff appearances which were forgettable)

Even Jesse Crain can put together 15 good innings...hell if you looked at Mijares numbers for the year they are pretty impressive (more so than Rauch) if you had to choose who would you have pitch? Its just an opinion. (my answer is none of the above but that is only because I had to watch them all pitch in person recently :p )

Congrats on a great season Twins fans. That run that you had at the end of the season may never been topped. If there was one team that could beat the Yankee's I figured it would have been the Twins. When baseball teams get hot, they can be almost impossible to beat.

I'm looking forward to the new ball park and hopefully it's not as big of a nightmare for my Tigers. :D

You guys can keep beating us in baseball and football and we'll do the same in hockey and basketball.
