2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Did anyone think the Twins weren't agressive enough with Mauer on that second single?

Cuddyer's single? I think it was 100% the right call holding him at third. You have to think that (normally) with the bases loaded and nobody out you're going to be able to at least push a run across via a sac fly or something. No need running yourself into an out and giving the Yankees a chance to be a double play away from getting out of the inning.

Maybe it was the right call, but that was the type of play where a reasonably fast guy scores w/o much trouble. The grass on that field slows the ball up a lot, they had their pinchrunner playing CF and his arm wouldn't draw any comparisons to Torii Hunter. Ulger stopped him very, very early, but Mauer didn't seem to be moving any faster than he did in going from 1st to 2nd a batter earlier. Even if we'd scored one, would it have mattered? Texiera hit absolute ropes both of his final ABs, and had stARoid needed to bat again, I'm sure he'd have come through with Kate blowing him kisses.

If Swisher is mediocre, then Cuddyer must be as well (their OPS+ and HR totals are nearly identical). Plus Swisher only cost them a little over $5 million this season - that's reasonable for a player entering his prime and hitting ~30 HRs per season (it's also a couple million cheaper than what Cuddyer is costing the Twins right now).

You're right, Mauer normally would score. However, as reported yesterday, he's had a sore hip flexor since Tuesday's game when he fell rounding first. and he's not as aggressive on the base paths as he would normally be.

Spot on - and he was had for the low low price of Wilson Betemit. What a steal - Kenny Williams is almost as big of a loser as Theo Epstein and Bill Smith. Maybe if he did his homework and learned about a little statistic called BABIP Swisher would still be a White Sock and maybe Chicago would be playing in this series instead.

I guess we will find out tonight if the Metrodome really has any magic left for the home squad.

I'd prefer if the team itself just scored about 25 runs and made it a moot point.

Baseball Tonight spent some time looking ahead to the Angels/Yankees matchup in the ALCS.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Twins doing much better in that dreaded "runners left on base" category tonight.

End of the 5th:

Twins 1 LOB
Yankees 2 LOB

Score 0-0

Nobody has been in scoring position, yet

EDIT: I just got a bad feeling as I typed that

Not only that, but he shipped three good prospects to the A's to get Swisher in the first place - so in effect, Chicago traded three of its better prospects to rent Swisher for a season and then get Wilson Betemit. Brilliant!

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Cuddyer had no chance in that AB, since he had decided beforehand that he was swinging at anything. :(

I think one of those would have been over John Scott's head. Did Delmon give him batting tips before he went up there?

Quite the game we have here...1-0 Twins top 7th...

And right to script, the next half inning after the Twins score, the game is tied... A-rod to boot  :(
