2009 Boston Red Sox

I don't know where the old thread went, but I want to vent. :D

Somethings up with Beckett. That's two starts in a row he has gotten shelled. Tired arm?
I like the way Tazawa has looked his last couple of starts. Buchholz also, although I'm not ready to hang our playoff hopes on the 2 youngsters.
We need Wake and DiceK to show up in mid-season form right away, or me thinks our playoff hopes will be on hold until 2010. :(

Yeah, I was wondering about the old thread too.

Anyway, I'm not quite as pessimistic as some fans are about the team's playoff chances. I was cursing Beckett yesterday, but the guy is 14-5 or something. I think they need a few things to fall into place:

1) Buchholz continues to pitch well as the #3 starter

2) Wakefield returns and gives his usual performance (4 ERA, more wins than losses, lots if innings pitched.

3) Penny does not start another game again in a Red Sox uniform.

I'm not expecting a 20 game winner out of the 5th starter, but the back end of the rotation is killing the bullpen. The pitching staff ought to be able to hold off Texas and Tampa down the stretch. Get into the playoffs and who knows what happens after that (see St. Louis in 06 for example).

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

I assumed there was a massive JD/SteveF debate about hitting people with pitches that spiraled helplessly out of control. And I'm sorry I missed it.

Real defensive struggle tonight.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Pessimistic for good reason. This team has no magic and the pitching sucks.

Month of August to date (22 games)
Runs for: 135
Avg. for per game: 6.14

Runs against: 122
Avg. against per game: 5.80

Record: 11-11

They've got to win at least 5 of the 7 remaining in this home stand to try and gain a couple on Texas and TB heading into Sept. to have chance. September starts with 3 @ TB and 3 @ CWS. TB cleaned our clock before the Yankees dismantled it, and I don't see that changing this time around @ TB. We have 3 more with TB @ home a week later. It could be over by then. We score 10, they score 15. Bottom line... pitching wins ball games, and we don't have it.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

That was a nice win tonight. Tough break for Lester with the bad hop/wild pitch on the strikeout. Would have gotten out of the 7th with a 2-1 lead. Tito pulled a brillaint pinch run and pinch hit with Green and Martinez in the 7th. And they both contributed for 2 runs in the 8th. Pretty sweet when that stuff works out. :)

Dear Boston:

Thank you. I don't know if we'll do anything with it, but thank you all the same.

Best wishes (at least the rest of this week),

Detroit

You might not be thanking us if the end of the series is going to go as I think. Gavin Floyd on the hill tomorrow against Wakefield coming back from injury..scary thought. Floyd in my opinion is one of most underrated pitchers in baseball. Plus John Danks going on Thursday could also spell trouble.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

That's okay. We opened up to a 4 1/2 game lead over CWS with your help. If we take care of our end it won't shrink, at least not today.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

should be an error on youk... he holds on, the runner is out! (hope he doesn't read this and get mad:eek: )

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Are Cleveland's middle infielders 7 feet tall? Because Martinez seems to think Pedroia/Gonzalez have another couple of feet out there.

And, always great to hear Denis Leary and Lenny Clark in the booth. :)

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Ok, I missed a good chunk of the game - why is there a shortstop on the mound for the Sox?

Nice play to end the 9th (though he should've had the K).

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

And Penney gets shown the door.

Penney and Smoltz. I was very dubious about both of those pickups. Oh well, damage control in August is better than none at all.

I've been trying to figure out since the All Star break if these guys are walking the path of the 05 Sox or the 06 Sox. I still don't know but afer tonight, it obviously seems more like the 06 edition....

You're making that determination based on last night? Really? One bad game. They won the series. As long as they keep doing that, they should make the playoffs. If you start seeing them drop series they should win (this weekend, for example), then you can start worrying.

As for Penny and Smoltz, I really thought they'd have more to offer, but I also think their issues were magnified because their starts became more important in light of the struggles/injuries the rest of the team had. I'm sure Penny will land on his feet in the NL, and be a decent pitcher again.
