Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

Interesting note in todays paper.

27 saves for Foster to pass Conklin for 5th on the list of saves in a UNH uniform.

Foster played 79 games over the last 4 years and there is little doubt he will get 27 saves this weekend. He is currently at 2162 saves or 27 per game.

Conklin played 93 games over 3 years and 2188 saves or 23.5 shots per game. 3.5 per game doesn't seem like much but that is clearly the drop off in tallent we have all seen.

I would throw a bit of credit to the overall improvement of the league, too; that's partly less talent at UNH because the whole league recruits better (dilution of talent) but also because . . . really, did Ty Conklin ever have to face a player the caliber of DaCosta when he stopped pucks against Merrimack? (not taking anything away from Ty, just saying it's not just the decline in talent)

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

Does anyone remember the Hop,Skip and Go Naked they served at the Catnip Pub?

Not at the Catnip Pub, but too many Hop, Skip and Go Nakeds will certainly make you Hop, Skip and Go Naked. The ones I have had are smooth drinks just loaded with Alcohol, great in the summer.

Edit - googled Hop Skip and Go Naked and there seems to be about a million ways to make them. I recall 5 equal parts 4 booz and 1 pineapple juice: vodka, beer (for the fizz - hence the Hop without it is just a skip and go naked) and 2 other Alcohols but off the top I can't recall...

Heh.

This sounds like a variation of the punch "Skippy Go Naked." Same idea, although the traditional recipe is vodka, lemonade, and beer.

I start with that basic recipe but add:

1 handle Vodka
1/5 UV Lemonade Vodka
1 handle Triple Sec
1/5 peach schnapps
30rack cheap beer
2 bottles Sprite
1 can lemonade powder
2 cans lemonade concentrate

The Sprite and beer add a slight carbonation, which with the sweetness of the lemonade powder/concentrate, makes it go down like soda for most people. I've seen 5 gallons go dry in 20 minutes. :p

Heehee... and before all of that, it was a chinese restaurant (?) that sold alcohol to minors... no one ever went for the food! ;)

Heh....heard about that Chinese place from some guys at work (shipyard).

Almost wish it were still there, as the Trough sucks, spiffy renovations be d*****.

To the under-recruited, under-coached, under-skilled, rebuilding, on the verge of a #2 seed .. UNH WILDCATS..

CONGRATS!!! YOU ARE CHAMPIONS.. AGAIN!!

May you have more periods like the 3rd tonight.. Keep it going!!!

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

Must say threw in the towel after dismal 2 periods , but still gathered up the courage to watch last period , how many times can they come from behind before they learn there lesson , hopefully next week they have an extra gear to kick into . however great season , didnt exspect this after an ugly first 8 games , maybe this means good things down the road . Ten times they have entered the last period down and have only lost one game ( lots of ties) very strange . good luck rest of the way ...

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

It wasn't the game I thought it would be but none the less they pulled it out and with an unbeaten streak at home against HE opponents this year, it's hard for anyone to say that UNH didn't deserve this title. GO CATS!!! Hop,Skip and Go Naked!!!!

This tie must feel like a win to UNH and a lose to BC.

My father says to me during the second intermission, this game over. He has been away most of the year and missed the games. My cmment back 2 things about this team they don't give up (which makes them fun to watch) and no leed is safe (for or against).

What I am most happy about, no sticks or gloves went flying. The Senoirs handled the trophy on senior night then they took the picture. Appropriate mix of happy and this is no big deal attitude. To me that means their heads are in the right place, not satisfied.

I don't think Mr. Umile can coach heart, but this team has it. That's the main reason for the RS trophy. Congrats, UNH.

I am not sure anyone can coach heart. They can only setup the conditions for the guys in the room to find it. In the end the players have to find it. They have to decide to have it for each other.

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

Before the game tonight, I looked at the trophy case in the lobby of the Whit. It actually has quite a lot of hardware in there - and now it has even more!

UNH - Hockey East Regular Season Champs 3 out of the last 4 years! Has a nice ring to it.

I finally figured out how to follow this team without pulling my hair out. The key - relax and endure the first couple of periods. When the game is on the line, they shift into another gear and baffle all comers, from the "elite" teams to the cellar dwellers. I witnessed the birth of these never-say-die Wildcats exactly a year ago at the UVM Gutt. It was the final regular game of last season. They fell behind to a talented Vermont team (who eventually made it to the Frozen Four) but stormed back to win 6-5. It earned them third place in the final standings. Then, of course, there was the North Dakota comeback, the near-miss comeback against eventual NC Champ BU, the comeback tie against #1 Miami, a bevy of comebacks in February, and tonight's sweetest comeback tie. I believe UNH has finally shed the reputation for playing soft when the chips are down.

I feel obliged to comment on Coach York's performance tonight. From interviews I've seen, he seems like a very nice man who must be fun to play for. He ain't no dope either. However, tonight I think he made two tactical errors. First, he allowed his 19-year-old goalie to get thrown to the wolves in the third period. York could not figure out how to adjust his defensive strategy to protect the poor kid from UNH's onslaught. I wonder how long it will take the young Milner to recover. Second, in the third period, York practically handed the keys to UNH by not aggressively forechecking. During the week, there was much discussion on whether BC traps - a discussion which included a nice tutorial from JB. In the third period, the single forechecker was playing real soft and the middle two players in the 1-2-2 were back around the red line. This allowed the UNH D-men to carry the puck out of their own zone with ease and initiate multiple rushes through the neutral zone. Big mistake.

Hardowa was solid. It was wonderful to see Henrion and McCarey produce huge goals. All four lines got plenty of icetime. Foster was strong when he needed to be. LeBlanc and Butler played their butts off. Sislo looks very dangerous again. All-in-all, very satisfying.

Tomorrow (I mean today), Kessel and Kostolansky can rest their ailing knees and we'll get to see DiGi play a little goal.

Oh, and by the way, that new trophy is very handsome.

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

First congrats to UNH,and the Captains - a great performance for the regular season and as C-H-C noted 3 out 4 regular season titles over that time period is nice. Consistent.

Wonder if it is a carry over from the ND game - one of the stats mentioned on game last night - I think I have this right - UNH has gone into the third period trailing nine times this season and has only lost four. In OT 3-1-7, 11 OT games? Seems like a lot.

Announcers were saying last night that in the third UNH was making a concerted effort to attack the trap by carrying in to the zone by with one player stickhandling right down the middle.

Surprised that York did not adjust earlier in the third as they were a completely different team at the very end of the game and in OT.
