Re: All Decade Team

Re: All Decade Team

Plenty of forwards to choose from...Haydar, Gare, C. Hemingway, B. Hemingway, Saviano, Collins, Callandar, Fornataro, Smith, Radja, MicFlikier, JVR, Butler, Winnik...and a few more fringy guys I really enjoyed watching...

Defense is definitely more difficult...Stafford, Flaishans, Yandle, Kessel, Switzer? Mounsey? Lubesnick? Fritsch? Teplitsky? I know everyone hated Switzer, I think he was dramatically under-appreciated. Stafford and Yandle (strictly offense) will be there, after that its a pretty underwhelming group overall...

Goalie...I'll take three, Conklin, Ayers, Regan...

you can take three, but they only picked 2 :)

I really really liked Fritsch. Stafford is really the only given on the list of D, though I think Yandle will based on his offense leading to his All-American selection...

The top six forwards scoring wise, who played at least two years in the 2000's are, in order, Haydar (219), Collins (173), McFlikier (150), C. Hemingway (148), Gare (142), B. Hemingway (135). Other legit candidates are Callendar (130), Fornataro (118), Saviano (117), and Radja (117). Of these 10, only McFlikier, B. Hemingway and Callendar were not first or second team All-Americans. So if that designation is an important factor, and I think it is, then Haydar, Collins, C. Hemingway, and Gare are no brainers. Saviano gets a nod since he hardly played his freshman year, increased his scoring every year, and was a big time player in the playoffs in both 2002 and 2003. That leaves the final spot for either Radja or Fornataro. I'll knock out Radja for his incident with Oshie in North Dakota (can't think of any other legit reason) and take Fornataro.

On defense, I'll take Stafford, who would have been an All-American if he had passed that course at UCLA) and Flaishans easily. Since there is no way I would ever vote for Yandle or Switzer, I'll take Teplitsky since he "scored" the game winner against BU in '03 and, off the wall, Chris Murray, who endured a lot to become a very effective defenseman his senior year.

Goalies - Ty in a landslide, then it's a choice between Ayers and Regan. Very tough decision. Ayers split time in 2002 with Carney, but was beyond heroic after getting his hand sliced up at Maine and coming back the next night. That earns him big props from me. And, of course, the next year he was the man, backstopping the run to the FF including all those shutouts of BU. He did tail off his senior year which is why Regan remains in the discussion. Regan has the better record, better save percentage, better goals against than Ayers, but was not the stud in the post season. So, for me, Ayers gets it over Regan, by a nose.

BTW, Kessel or Butler cannot be in the discussion since their best years have come in the current decade. Fun topic though.

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

I didn't realize Brett "Intheway" scored that many points. I would not put him on an all-decade team.
Haydar, Saviano, and Collins for sure. Colin Hemingway, Lanny Gare, and probably Mike Radja.

Not going to weigh in on the defense.

As for the goalies, what are the years are being considered? 1999-00 through 2008-09? And is it just play during those years? If so, I might actually go with Ayers and Regan, whose careers were fully in that decade.

Going by what they showed at Northeastern, I believe one or two players only played a year or two in the decade. Conklin has to be on that list...

my random thoughts...
Conklin/Ayers

Stafford/Flashains/Yandle/Fritsch/

Haydar/Saviano/Flick/Hemingway/Gare/Collins

Last year they were trying to resurrect the spot as an Irish pub. Anybody know how that worked out?

This sounds like the Down Under Pub was in the same spot as the Tap Room, which is now the Knot Irish Pub. The Knot has been around since 2006.

The Knot is a different sort of scene than the other bars, but it's pretty cool and the patrons are loyal.

the down under pub was great. i remember the first time i went there was in the spring of 1970 when abbie hoffman and jerry rubin were there. the two events were mutually exclusive though:)

bruce huther, unh football and dallas cowboys fame was a bartender there for a awhile.

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

Then yeah, Conklin definitely. I think I'd put Regan over Ayers.

Going with CBG here. While I might agree that Ayers was more athletic than Regan, he had to be. (IMO) his positioning was not as solid, so his play required more athleticism. And while numbers may lie, I don't think they do comparing these two guys. Yes, Ayers had more post-season success. But, look at which players the masses consider a lock for the decade team, and which are on the edge. Few (if any) would disagree that Ayers and Conklin had more talent in front of them? Yet, Regan has most of the school records.

The Knot is in the cellar next to where the Down Under was. Back in the day, the ground floor space on the corner of the building was occupied by the College Corner, a greasy spoon restaurant (I shouldn't say that because one of my best friends back then was a cook there) that dated from the 40's I think. The Gangwars (sp?), who run T&C and still own the whole building, carved out a bar "down under" the College Corner when Durham became a wet town in, get this, 1969. Yes, UNH fans, before 1969 you were unable to legally buy a beer or any other alcoholic beverage in Durham.

As far as I remember, all they sold was cheap beer (25 cents for a generic 8 oz mug) and maybe cheap whiskey. When I was frequenting the place, they had a law that you could not stand up with an alcoholic beverage in your hand. So, if you wanted to move from one table to another, you had to get a waitress to come over and move your drink for you. What a place, dark, low ceilings, smokey, lots of noise and a great juke box. I've been in the Knot a couple of times, and it has its atmosphere, but the Down Under was a great college bar.

It's easy.. if it's a regular season game.. Conklin and Regan.. Post Season.. Conklin and Ayers. Can't we choose 3.. Umile's been dressing 3 all season.

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

Ayers was better than Regan, period. Not getting into the discussion between Ayers and Conklin (too many arguments with my section). And if most people say that the 98-99 cast of wildcats was the most stacked UNH team ever, how can you not say that Conklin didn't play behind more talent?

Im going with
G-Mike Ayers
G-Ty Conklin
D-Garrett Stafford
D-Mick Mounsey
F-Darren Haydar
F-Lanny Gare
F-toss up between Saviano and Pre-Cal

hoping fan favorite is between Ayers and Haydar.

98-99 was the most stacked. 01-02 was * close. Both were better than the 06-07 and 07-08 teams.

I'd add Saviano to the list of fan favorites. All three were pretty well-loved by the fans.

I have to disagree, I'd say 01-02 was more stacked top to bottom. 98-99 has the best line that we've ever seen, and one of the best in recent college hockey history, but it was a big dropoff after that. in 01-02 the Haydar-Savi-Collins line wasn't as good as Krog-Souza-Haydar, but the supporting cast was a lot more talented than the really good role players behind them in 98-99...
Gare, Hemingway, Prudden, Abbott, Callendar, Aikins, Foley, Caron >
Sadowski, Shipulski, Onufrechuck (Sadsi/Onufrechuck was the best penalty killing combo we've ever seen though!), Swain, Ficek, Rogers, Busch, Cordiero, Dzied'

The advantage of 98-99 was having 2 defensemen like O'Brien and Filipowicz (man what a power-play that was)... The 98-99 team had the edge defensively and Conklin is the best goaltender we've seen in our time...

But top to bottom, the 01-02 was a more talented team.

Interesting that our two best seasons (save for the way 01-02 ended) were on the shoulders of a goaltending rotation...

How bout a guy like Truelson for the all-decade team? I had forgotten about him..

Keeping off topic and helping the youngsters stay young.. my first recollection of the Down Under was as a Freshman in the fall of '76. I was working at the Tin Palace, aware of the TP, Scorpio's and the Keg Room as watering (drowning?) holes. Were they really selling nickel draughts at the Keg Room? Anyway one of the "older" (early 20s?) cooks was leaving work one night and mentioned she was heading "Down Under". She liked it there because they served hard liquor. A bit later I ventured in and recall thinking that I was in a big persons' bar. Serious drinkers, not much college riff raff.

During my sophomore year a guy from my dorm DJ'd Grateful Dead Down Under to a packed house one night each week. There was a side bulkhead(?) door to the street by the theater and hardware store which one could slip in and out through for supplemental recreational activity. The DU was definitely the underground spot for professional grade partyers.

Now who has some good stories about the year Main Street became one way?

Go cats, beat BC!

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

Is it just me, or does it say something about where our minds are, as UNH fans, that with a big weekend looming against big rival BC, with a regular season championship on the line, we're talking about past teams and past bars?

Don't get me wrong, fun to read, but . . . nobody has any thoughts on the upcoming game? Are we just assuming we'll tie Friday night and back in? I for one think UNH takes the Friday game, and Saturday . . . a tie is a solid showing for UNH @ Conte Forum.
