Can anyone fill me in on the two ref. system?The question is: if both refs have a clean line of vision which ref calls the penalty? Seems like often one is waiting for the other to blow the whistle on an infraction and the whistle never gets blown at all.Furthermore,shouldn't( theoretically) both have their arms up when it's an obvious penalty?

Not really sure the question. If a ref sees a penalty he puts his arm up (and or blows the whistle if the offending team has the puck) I imagine that each ref is, in theory, responsible for a certain side of the ice, but they call a penalty whenever they see fit to...

The way it works in theory...

Ref in zone is watching the puck (so he can look all cool pointing at a goal), calling infractions on the puck carrier or whistling the play dead if the goalie covers / ref looses sight.

The back side ref is suppose to look for stuff away from the puck and be ready if the play transitions up ice.

I believe the concept was that neither ref crosses the center ice. The players skate in shifts but 1 ref is suppose to cover all the ice for the whole game. How can that guy be in correct position on goals etc? Also it cleans up the behind the play the guy watching the puck really can't see. Finally it is suppose to help out on backside pick plays etc that again the guy watching the puck has a hard time seeing.

If it is all working right the two refs shouldn't be looking at the same area of ice so they shouldn't both have a good look at a penalty at the same time.

There was a game at UNH recently where a penalty was so blatant, both refs called it.

Bobby Butler has been named to the East Squad for the NCAA Skills Competition. Another bump in the Hobey Push for our captain.

Kelly Paton was also named to the women's Skill's Showcase; another bump in the Patty Kaz for her.

Go 'Cats! :D :D

O.K. JB ,what you said makes sense. I'll accept that . I should say that what brought on this question were three separate game incidents where ,from my vantage point down low in 102 ,I could see the low ref in the zone had a good view as a penalty occured in the opposite corner(where the puck was also). Why did I think it was a penalty ? Well ,the ref high out on the blue line called it and the low ref closer to the play (with what I thought a better view) did nothing . Confession: I probably expect too much from these refs-always have.Re: Bobby -Did we all know that Jason Krog was the last Wildcat to get 20 goals and 20 assists in a reg. season?

Well I did say in theory. I don't think it is actually applied well. There is still too much interference away from the puck (committed by ALL teams). It must be tough for the backside REF. His training is to follow the puck and now he needs to not follow the puck but still have a good idea where it is if a transition occurs. That change isn't easy, and we are talking about years of training the other way to over come.

I expect more of REFs as I like a tight called game that allows free flowing hockey. IMO that is the best hockey, for example last Friday vs BC they let a ton of tripping and hooking go both ways. If either UNH or BC wanted to slow that game way down they could have, the REFs would have let them. I hate "let them play" hockey. REFs that say "we don't want to influence the out come of the game" well not calling penalties IS influencing the out come of the game. I try to remember these guy all have "real" jobs and that I shouldn't be hard on them, but some really drive me crazy.

Just a couple late thoughts . Used to "like" Vermont before they came to HE. Have to remind myself to stay away from the "GO CATS" thing and go with the "GO BLUE--GO WHITE" one!! Ohyeah ,try (as I always do )not to be *****in about the officiating.

Oh wait, Spring Break starts this weekend. We can't expect them to give up boozing somewhere other than campus to go to hockey, can we?

Without doing a lot of research, I would point out that he said a 20/20 REGULAR SEASON.

Did Smith, the Hemingways, and Haydar put up 20/20 prior to the Hockey East tourney?

Haydar? Probably. But again, I'd rather drink than look it up. :p

B Hemingway had 20g 18a in the regular season in 04-05
P Callander had 25g and 29a in 04-05, but 19g in the regular season
S Saviano had 27g and 22a in 03-04 but 19a in the reg season
in 2002-03:
Gare had 22g and 29 a 21g and 25a in the regular season
Hemingway had 22g and 25a but 17g in the regular season
in 2001-2002
Haydar was WELL over 20g and 20a in the regular season with 27g 39a
Hemingway was also well over with 30g 26a in the reg season
Collins also had over 20g and 20a overall, 18g 22a in the reg season

So to summarize, Gare did it in 02-03 and Haydar and Hemingway both did it in 01-02

Still limited company, and not sure why the distinction b/w the regular season and overall...

o.k. That's what I get for relying on someone else's research. I stand humbly corrected .I think the info came from HE Online but I didn't see it before I posted the erroneousness here--SORRY but nonetheless happy with tonites outcome.Sislo with the wraparound ...NICE!:) :)

Listened on radio out in here in Colorado, but I was not even worried when we were down 4-2 late in the 2nd. :)
