2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

How bad was the McCarthy hit on the Merrimack player in final minute of the game? According to box score he got a DQ and will miss the next game. Good call?

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

Sneddon's a very good coach, but this team is in complete disarray. Doesn't help that two of the best offensive threats on the team didnt play at all this weekend (Milo and Stacey). What was up with MacKenzie not playing? I guess the one point this weekend actually exceeded my current expectations of this team. They NEED those three players back.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

I like Sneddon. He'll get things figured out.
Yeah, but probably not this season. I'm willing to give Sneddon the benefit of the doubt and cut him some slack for what he's been able to do the last few years. That said, you do have to wonder what's going on with the team. Their leading scorer has now been scratched from three different games in the last few weeks. And they've had a player (Franklin) leave the team and another (Atkinson) take an indefinite leave of absence. Things appear to be in disarray and I don't see it getting straightened out to help for this season. I am, however, encouraged for the future, particularly with the play of the freshmen who, at times, seem to be the only ones generating legitimate scoring chances.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

This team has zero offensive punch and little creativity in the O-zone. Given that I am not sure how the heck you sit Milo, their best pure scorer. I really don't know what Sneddon is thinking on this one.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

With regards to Madore, he must be having nightmares of pucks flying at him. Kudos for keeping things remotely close.

Milo being a healthy scratch is odd. I agree he must have done something to get say on the bench. If that's the case then it is good to show everyone that no matter who you are you sit. However, if that's the case why is Cullity still on the ice????

Amazingly, the cats actually manage to move up in the pwr:eek: SteveF is right, I do not understand them.

The cats still have a shot but that shot is seriously dwindling and given the remaining stretch I am on the side that this team is done playing hockey in 3 weeks. Here's hoping they get up for UNH because this is a big series. Somehow, the Cats actually manage to play well against the top teams, but they seem to lack the killer instinct with the weaker teams.

I'm not sure how I feel   :( ????

Frustrations from the faithful...fair comments...who can possibly know what goes on in the locker room.

The season for all intent is over. Think yard sale of all yard sales, wait….didn’t we have one of these at the beginning third of the season?

Yet, 6 league games yet to play and these kids have shown the ability to play to pretty good hockey, just not consistently. Perhaps they will surprise us faithful?

Regarding Saturday's game...wow, going into a prevent defense when up 2-1 with more than 8 minutes left in game was a sure fire recipe for a tie that ended up being a loss.

During the Umass game on ESPN a few weeks ago, when the Umass coach was interviewed after the 1st period; he was asked if they would continue to play the Marcou/Wellman/Syner line every other shift; he stated that they wanted to play their playmakers – live or die with them so to speak.

It is time to play the playmakers, come up with 2 lines that go out every other shift – maybe a 1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2-3 then 1-2-3-4. Then repeat.

Right now the freshman line would be line 1 and play at least every other shift – they are the only line that seems to get it. They pass, they shoot, they include the defensemen in their puck movement and passing schemes. They produce.

After 28 games I have NO idea who would make up the 2nd line. But Stacey and Milo should be 2 of the 3 on this line, that is, if healthy and if not in the coach’s dog house, respectively. These 2 have hockey sense, much like the freshman line.

Irwin, Downing, Vock and Roloff are too inconsistent. Irwin play has deteriorated during the season and it seems he can not win puck battles in the corners...loses the puck too frequently as it seems to hop over his stick. Downing was 1st star of the Friday night game but even Sneddon said the staff was not happy with his play and moved him to the 4th line at the start of the Saturday game.

As far as the 4th line -there needs to be a lot less playing time for the 1 goal scorers on this team. Maybe a shift every 5th or 6th shift just to give the top 2 lines a break. These would include Higgins, Anctil, Marshall and Leonard. These guys have energy, skate around, hustle, etc. But the have proven they accomplish nothing considering the ice time they get.

All this being said, still sitting in a position to get a coveted NCAA tournament spot has to be the silver lining for these players. That 6-1 out of conference record is huge right now. Hopefully they can fix their play and at least split each of the next 3 weekends.

Madore went through this in the USHL (Chicago) where he would routinely see over 40 shots per game. I am guessing he did not think he would see it at Vermont.

What is Cullity still doing in the lineup?

Fortunately, the 3 teams coming up on the schedule are top teams so perhaps the "play well" part of the equation will come into play?

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

Random thoughts.

The Milo thing has me scratching my head. Fine if he did something dumb - sit him Friday night.. but both nights at this point in the season?

Check out Milo's blog from Friday Feb 12th -
http://www.uvm.edu/~sportspr/mens_hockey/?Page=milo_blog.html

No indication at all that he was in the dog house. Really weird.

Totally agree that the Freshman line is the one bright spot. They are fun to watch and it feels like something might happen positive when they are out there.

Irwin looks OFF. last 8 games he as one goal and two assists. (Mass, Maine, Prov, Merrimack)

Lawson looked better. (at least on Friday night. I did not go to Sat night)

On Friday night I was not stressed out as usual at the game. Then I realized why.. I had accepted the fact that they ain't going anywhere after the Maine series.

Then I see the PWR rankings and I just shake my head. Just don't get it.

....see post #372!;)

Trust the coach is not working for me right now......

Seriously, I like Sneddon, but sitting Milo is a headscratcher. If there is a good reason tell us. A healthy scratch of the best offensive player is bizarre at this point. It seems like Sneddon is throwing guys under the bus and hoping the team is going to respond, but it just is not happening this year.

Coaching decisions, no matter what sport, is not information that is made public. And since you do not know the circumstances behind his decision making, how do you justify saying he is "throwing guys under the bus"? You may want to take a history lesson since there seems to be some history here with this player in question!

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

Whoaaaaa....While I too am down on this team this is a bit drastic. I, like many, may have had too high expectations for this team. At the same token look at the rest of the league and for that matter D1 this year. Maine was ready to lynch Timmay earlier this year, UNH started out horribly and their fans were almost writing off this season, BC started out slow (I noted after our first win against them that when they gelled they would be formidable late in the year), UML had even grander expectations than UVM and are likely not to make it beyond the HE playoffs, PC is now an Army of None after initial high expectations for the Army years, MC has a talented team that I think has underperformed, UMass is suddenly in a funk, NU....Not sure but can't be thrilled with the season even if it is a rebuilding year, and I almost forgot the defending NCAA champs BU. Let alone Michigan, Minnesota, Notre Dame, etc... It could be worse.

Yup, it got worse all right. Right before our eyes at the Gutt. They could not close out Maine with a 4-2 lead two weeks ago and they could not close out Merrimack EITHER night with a one goal lead. Awful.

Hey, they just need the game to be 52 minutes long instead of 60 minutes and they would be on a nice streak.

I see definite potential for a 9 game winless streak to close the year. They will get swept by UNH and I don't see how they can get a W against BU at home the way they are playing. That leaves it to the UML weekend and by then I think they might be far enough back to need to sweep to get into the playoffs. I don't think this team has the intestinal fortitude step up to a challenge

And how do you get 2 of the last 6 points and move to 9th in the PWR. That is kind of stupid... Maybe they will make the tournament after not making the HE playoffs. Ridiculous.

We need some snow...

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

I am a Merrimack fan, but have always rooted for other small schools like Maine, UVM, St. Lawrence to do well when MC is not involved. UVM has a great fan base in a terrific old rink with a great environment.

That being said, I cannot believe the UVM fans who are bashing the coach. Sneddon took the Catamounts to a Frozen Four a year ago. Hosted quarterfinals series. Made it to the HE Championship game the year before. He has recruited several players playing in the NHL right now.

It's a rebuilding year, folks. UVM is still over .500 and has a chance to make the NCAA Tourney and host home ice series. Chill out. If things continue down this direction for a few years, maybe get up in arms. Until then, enjoy some of the best hockey around. College hockey is a great product. I can count on two hands the games that I've left being disappointed I paid to see. Even when the other team comes out on top, most games are good games with the kids trying hard and seeing some future pros out there.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

I saw McCarthy's hit at the end of the game Saturday. I thought it was a TERRIBLE call. Should have only been 2 minutes for slashing. A game DQ is a horrendous call on that play.

And, nothing was called when Anctil suffered a similar fate and left the game with an injury. There were a lot of calls that did not get made both ways, and I don't think reffing impacted either game - but that was a severe inconsistency that damages UVM's paltry chance of taking points at UNH this weekend....

FWIW - McCarthy was by far the best offensive threat UVM had on saturday night. He went through two Mack D like butter (just like De Costa did to win the game except Mack has better goaltending) in the second but had little room left and ran out of space, hitting the post trying to deke past Cannatta's left pad.

I will be surprised if UVM scores more than a goal or two this weekend without Stacey all weekend and McCarthy on Friday.

Comment to people that want Sneddon to play two or three lines heavily. They looked very tired to me on Friday night late in the 3rd and in OT. I don't think their conditioning is where it should be - and I would not want to see the 4th line sit much.

The Mack shot totals were high, but scoring chance wise I thought it was pretty close, with UVM actually having an edge in both games (particularly Friday). UVM overpassed and turned down many shot opportunities while Mack took every shot they could, knowing that Madore is small and rebounds are a good thing.

DaCosta is very good, maybe the best player I have seen on the ice this year.

Irwin and Vock have been pretty much invisible lately, the former has been weak for a while now and the latter has not shown up for the balance of the season relative to my expectations.

Madore has been ok, but has not made many late game saves when needed. He is not the problem, but he's also not the solution.

This is a good sized senior class (including Milo), they are going to go out on a very weak and dissapointing note unless they pull a quick u turn

Ok, I will play student for a minute. Since you are so smart, teach me some history.....what is the problem with Milo.?

Milo seems like a good kid to me, other than the fact he plays for the **** Yankees!;)

Other teams ahead of you lose as well.

As long as Denver, Minnesota-Duluth, Yale and Boston College keep winning...but, saying that...it would be nice to see at a minimum, splits over the next 3 weekends.

Questions to ponder...

Anctil went down in the Saturday game, McCarthy get DQ, Stacey out indefinitely with lower body injury...Milo has to be back in the lineup, right??? Perhaps by default, Albertson gets a chance to play too?

Cullity looked to be hurt late in the Saturday game...not sure if it was upper or lower body. He missed games earlier in the season with shoulder injury. Whatever ailment MacKenzie had/has...better be cured by Friday. If not, perhaps Herrington gets the call?

I am sure Ted Ryan will get the inside scoop in his weekly press conference on Wednesday or Thursday.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

Cullity came off the ice holding his arm/elbow. He pulled off his elbow pad hoping to get a whistle immediately. Official never saw it so he was in agony until the whistle. Hopefully it just looked worse than it was.

I hate to see a player injured but I disagree with your "hopefully." I can't be sad about anything that gets Cullity off the ice. I just wish it was a healthy scratch so he knew that his undisciplined play was the cause.

For Friday I'm sure Milo will be back, probably Leonard, and ALbertson to fill the voids, maybe Franzon in for Cullity.
