2009-2010: Official Minnesota Wild Thread

Re: 2009-2010: Official Minnesota Wild Thread

Nice to see a kid (Anton Khudobin) get a shot to play and make the best of it.

Re: 2009-2010: Official Minnesota Wild Thread

Johnsson and Leddy out, Barker in. I am confuzzled.

Also, Earl sent to Houston, Cody Almond makes his NHL debut tonight against the Thrashers.

I'm done with them. It's ok, it was fun while it lasted. I don't like the NHL that much anyway.

How many times are you 'done' with teams before you really are? :p You'll still watch/follow and then complain about every move that's made. :D

Re: 2009-2010: Official Minnesota Wild Thread

From Russo at the Strib:
Trading Leddy was made easier by the influx of defensemen in the system -- Marco Scandella, Tyler Cuma, being the main two, and the long-term future of Brent Burns. The Wild, I am also told, was very concerned about Leddy's development at the U.

That can't be a good thing for Lucia, when comments like that are now coming from the local NHL franchise.

Re: 2009-2010: Official Minnesota Wild Thread

The updated part of the Russo post is pretty interesting:

(UPDATED)

Wild assistant GM Tommy Thompson, reached in Vienna on a scouting trip:

“You’re not going to walk in there in the dead of night and steal a guy like Cam Barker. You’re going to have to give up something that hurts.”

“Barker will get better as he gets older, matures, puts everything together. This guy’s played pretty well in the National Hockey League. He’s a big, mobile guy who can shoot the puck.”

Depth on D allowed this? “You’re not going to be able to keep all three f those top defense prospects to make this trade. That’s the cost of doing business. They wanted a prospect, and you look at their team, they don’t need forwards. That’s the way it is. Just like Pouliot for Latendresse. The test for me is not how Pouliot does in Montreal; it’s how Pouliot would have done in Minny, just like Latendresse was dying under a vine in Montreal. If we think we can get a guy in here that can really upgrade the Minnesota Wild for the long-term, it’s going to have to cost something. It’s as simple as that. Fortunate thing is we have now, we didn’t have two, three years ago, we have some depth in the top-end defense prospects.”

Thompson also talks about the U in tomorrow' Star Tribune.

Re: 2009-2010: Official Minnesota Wild Thread

You bail on teams quicker than dems bailed on acorn. ;)

...or the GOP bails on fiscal prudence. :D

After ripping a fellow Minnesota program (which was totally unnecessary), I think the Wild should give up on this hypocritical 'State of Hockey' gimic.

Re: 2009-2010: Official Minnesota Wild Thread

While TommyThompson has proven to pretty much be a moron it's hard to disagree with his assessment of the current state of the Gopher program.
True, but I don't understand publicly throwing the Gopher hockey team under the bus because they feel they drafted the wrong guy.

That's why.

Because they knew they would get flack from the Rubes that feel Gopher Hockey is the end all be all of hockey in the world...ya know the ones who sound like you did when they made the trade. :p

What are they supposed to do, duck the question? Everyone wants people in sports to be honest, then when they are they get mad at them because they dont like the answer. What did he say that wasn't true? Hell he was more diplomatic than we are about the current state of the program...but you want him to lie about it to appease a fanbase that has no real tie to his beyond being in the same state? If you don't want the answer to the question then you better hope Russo doesn't ask...Thompson is DEAD ON!

They wanted out of their pick and traded it while also getting rid of an overpaid player they were going to lose and getting a pretty decent player back who will be here until I believe 2011-2012. If this was any other scenario you guys would be all excited but he traded ONE OF US!!11!!1 so he needs to burn! It is amazing how fast people can turn on someone in this town...and people wonder why we as fans are considered a joke.

edit to add: Just in the interest of full disclosure I was one of the few that liked the Leddy pick and while I still wish they were keeping him, they basically traded him for a guy who is playing right now in the NHL. (Johnnson was gone after this season so his part of the deal is a wash) That is about the perfect scenario for me as a Wild fan. As a Gopher fan it bugs me that our NHL stock is dropping faster than GMs last year.

Everything else about the trade makes sense, but I don't understand the comment, either. It would have been easy to just say, "we traded Nick Leddy to Chicago."

After the crappy performance last night, I have a feeling there are going to be many a new face in the organization through March and April. And really, it is probably what needs to happen regardless. I only hope they don't decide to take on too many more larger contracts than what they give up. As it sits now, this team is poised pretty well for free agency acquisitions. Is that even allowed under Minnesota state law?!??

He is a local boy, he couldnt ignore the question. If he does he gets a similar reaction to this only instead of just hating the Gophers he hates Minnesota players.
