Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

So does this Toronto help the Bruins get Taylor Hall or not?

Well, I certainly don't think Toronto got any better with this deal. I don't for the life of me understand having close to 30M tied up on your defensemen (Beauchemin, Komisarek, Kaberle, Phaneuf, Finger)....not to mention they have very, very little in the way of offense.

That being said, I think it is a fluid situation in Toronto, and that Burke will make more deals before the deadline.

I can't find it anywhere but did they actually trade Toskala for Anaheim's first? That would be crazy if the Ducks pulled that off.

Edit: wow... "Plus, Toronto FAN radio's Howard Berger is reporting that the Leafs have sent goalie Vesa Toskala to the Anaheim Ducks for J.S. Giguere and a 1st round pick."

I don't think that deal has been officially announced yet, but I would suspect that Toronto would be getting a pick, for taking Giguere's salary off of the Ducks' hands. You can't have 11M tied up in two goalies in a cap world (see Blackhawks, Chicago; 2008-2009 season).

That deal makes more sense to me from a Leafs' perspective than the Phanuef one. They get a mentor to Gustavsson and a desperately needed first round pick...and Toskala was junk. In a year and a half Giguere is gone and Gustvasson can take the reigns. Burke has always said he's willing to take on salary for picks.

Agreed, I just can't believe that Anaheim would go that extent just to dump salary. Do we know what year the pick is for?

I'm going to go ahead and assume Toronto is looking for Anaheim's pick this year, given that theygaave their own to Boston. But I don't know.

As for Anaheim - they had their hands tied with Hiller's contract extension yesterday. They had to move Giguere. It is painful to part with a first rounder, but Toskala is off the books at the end of this year, and they also don't have to worry about Giguere's 6M salary next year. Think of Giguere's money as going toward Hiller's deal and the deal they're going to have to give Ryan.

I know people get worked up over 1st round draft picks, but unless it's an absolute home run (pick 1-5), than I think sometimes it makes sense to take care of the talent you have (Hiller, Ryan) rather than to potentially lose it because you didn't have cap space.

It's just life in the cap era, I suppose.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Guys, it's Toskala and Blake for Giguere. No 1st round pick involved.

Mike Lange: Aaaaaannnnnnndd Jimmy Howard just lost his liquor license.

I don't like the result on the ice, but that was funny as hell. I've heard Lange and his act before, but I hadn't heard that one.

It's surreal to watch Detroit give up 40+ shots time after time and see their goalie of all people bail them out.

If Kronwall's seriously hurt again, the Wings may as well be sellers at the trade deadline.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Who, exactly, do you sell?

Holmstrom and Bertuzzi would probably gather something unless you're planning on resigning them. Heck, you could always pull a Recchi and resign them in the offseason. Hope to find someone dumb enough to want Maltby or Draper? Trade Osgood for a 7th?

Holmstrom is an expiring contract and they still feel that he's useful. Bertuzzi has played great so I could see trying to trick someone there.

Maltby is probably retiring after this year. Dealing Draper I wouldn't mind seeing even though he's supposed to be a big locker room guy. Osgood they're stuck with.

Besides, they've still got to get Holmstrom and Franzen back on the ice yet. Offense has been their problem. Sure the defense is prone to stupidity but Howard (!!!) has bailed them out of a lot of crap. Shootouts are stupid so I can't hold that against him.

Wasn't Franzen a ACL? Those always seem like they can play in 6 months, but it's 10-12 before they're at 100%.

Yeah. He's been cleared to play by doctors and he's due to get game action soon. He's been practicing with the team since the end of December.

Turns out Kronwall "tweaked" his knee and he said he's "good to go."

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Quote of the day: "It was definitely a shock, but I'm very excited about going to Toronto and being a Maple Leaf," said Phaneuf.

"It's a cliche. If Wayne Gretzky can get traded anyone can get traded. I was very surprised."
