Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Definitely an elbow with intent to injure. At the very least, he shouldn't be playing anymore.

Surprised someone didn't come after him after the attack in the first video.

I think everyone immediately hustled to the injured player, then got the stretcher. They knew right away it was bad.

Then they immediately ejected Cormier otherwise he would have likely been Chief-ed.

I think the other team was just worried about getting their convulsing teammate off the ice, and hoping he doesn't die.

"Another update on Tam's condition (from someone of the Remparts organization who just left hospital):

http://www.quebec800.com/blogs/view/32

Translation:

He's feeling well given the circumstances. He has a traumatic brain injury, he almost died tonight. Several scans were made to make sure he didn't have anything major to his brain. Good news is that he's got no oedema (accumulation of water in his brain). The shock was so big that the diagnostic places him between a severe concussion and a brain death. He'll stay under observation at the Rouyn Noranda hospital for 48 hours. He has no fractures but his mouth is not looking good and he lost some teeths. He has to pass some other tests tomorrow, for his pelvis and his back.

Mikael is conscious. He spoke with his family. He's in good hands at the hospital. Continue to pray for him, he needs it.

Quebec's atheltic therapist said he feared he would lose him when Tam stopped breathing for 30 seconds after he got him out of the ice.

It's worst than I thought."

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Forget never playing hockey again. Cormier should be put in jail for about 20 years.

and people think Avery is a scumbag...

Makes me even more glad the US won that juniors game against Canada this year.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Possibly the ugliest and worst hit I've ever seen, from QMJHL Devils prospect Patrice Cormier does this.

Considering that in the OHL, Erie 20 year old Michael Liambas received a yearlong suspension for a hit that appeared to be much less malicious (and perhaps even no intent to injure), Patrice Cormier should receive the same fate.

While the OHL and QMJHL aren't the same league, so technically there isn't a "precedent" this year, but Cormier's action is in my opinion much, much more vicious than that of Liambas.

It'll be interesting to see what the QMJHL does here. They've tried to pass themselves off as the kinder, gentler brand of CHL hockey with their more hard-line stance on fighting and violence. However, with a star player (who happens to be francophone--much as I hate to point it out, that does matter to some involved in the QMJHL) I'd bet they go somewhere near 10 games, although tossing him for the season wouldn't be unfair, given the circumstances. However, if that happens, Scooby may be proven right; I'm not 100% certain, as I can't recall this happening during my tenure with the Q, but a ban MAY make him AHL eligible, and if so would perhaps simply end up moving immediately to Lowell (unless the AHL and other minor pro leagues decided that they would likewise uphold the ban).

Didn't the original story include something about charges possibly being filed? If that is the case, it won't matter what the league says. Like I said before, put him away for a while, see how great of a hockey player he is after doing some time.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

You know what pi**es me off? The fact that if this kid gets hard time for practically committing homicide, he's still going to get NHL deals. And "fans" would commend him for his "hard nosed effort and grit. And truculence."

But someone like Billy Tibbetts who does time because at 17 his 15 year old girlfriend gave him a blow job gets read the riot act by these same fans for being a disgrace to hockey players across the globe.

We live in a country with a southern mentality. Violence - Good, Sex - Bad. Just look at how movies are rated.

Avery is a scumbag, but for different reasons. I don't know what Cormier is like off the ice. Avery is a nutcase off the ice. Avery also likes to do things that are more subtly moronic than Cormier. I don't remember Avery doing something as overt as what Cormier did.

I say ban him from the Q for a year, force him to watch the WNBA for the rest of his life...oh, and fight a bear.
Watch the WNBA? That's cruel and unusual punishment.

Definitely an elbow with intent to injure. At the very least, he shouldn't be playing anymore.

DEFINITELY. There was no one even near him. He came off the ice, headed towards the play then changed direction and took a run at Tam, skated by and away after Tam laid on the ice and convulsing.

Seriously the most disturbing video I've seen on ice since Teslak's cut.

Good news for Cormier though: The Devils have the rights to him. Lamorello doesn't like cheap players. Oh wait... that means that is bad for Cormier. The Devils might cut ties altogether... too bad for a 2nd round draft pick.

And a year ban? This is one of those things that makes me wonder about life bans. Well, when Tam can play again, Cormier can ask for reinstatement... or he can go play in the KHL, which allows such nonsense.

This is the second Q disciplinary action that has been looked into in the past week. Tremblay got suspended 4 games for his incident which looked TAME compared to this.

He'll probably get 20 games, but I'd love to see the Q step up and say "Indefinitely." He's 20 years old and has one year of eligibility left. I'd love even more for the Q to remove the remaining eligibility and force the Devils either to sign him or let him go.

EDIT: As for the WJ hit, hes lucky that was in Canada and not in Europe or the US. He'd've been suspended for that too. This hit was even MORE unnecessary. Rodin was by the bench skating into the play (I think) but was definitely out of it. Cormier was skating back to the bench for a change. What purpose does Cormier have in hitting Rodin even legally?

I would like to take this time to issue a public apology to Della Rovere for comparing him to Steve Downie. It is a mistake I'll never make again. Patrice Cormier, you're no better than Steve Downie and is encouraging that Hockey Canada can be "proud" of idiots they claim they do not raise within their ranks. Good work.

Well, he's suspended indefinitely atm. This needs to be a multi-year thing, which means the AHL/NHL etc. would have to add something on, because he's out of the QMJHL after this season anyway. If someone doesn't hammer down on this stuff, someday soon some 17/18/19 year old is going to die on the ice and all hell will break loose on this continent.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Listening to the Sabres - Yotes game on the Internet. So, no video of this one, but Pominville scores in the third to make it 7-2. He was originally credited with the fifth goal (his second of the night), but it got taken away. So, hats were thrown onto the ice with his second goal. And, the refs nearly took away the seventh goal because he kicked the puck before he hit it with his stick. That would have been embarrassing.

He has 1 more year in the Q.

I agree however that something/somebody needs to be the example that hammers it home that you can't go for headshots anymore. How many times is it going to be "This was bad, but we're only going to punish you for 10 games because of it," until somebody dies or gets permanently disabled before a stand is taken on this. I would like to hear Don Cherry's thoughts on this Saturday night.

Edit: just read this on PuckDaddy. Typical

Devils GM Lou Lamoriello has spoken with Cormier and doesn't believe "that criminal charges or a suspension for the remainder of the season are warranted for the elbow," per the Bergen Record

Opinion on the following hit?

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vdo6QudKBuw&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vdo6QudKBuw&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Personally, I think it was dirty, head-hunting hit where he left his feet to deliver a nasty shot. Also, he was suspended indefinitely.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Left his feet, came from a long way...intent to go high...just a d-bag move in general.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Lamarello (sp) had Scott Stevens on his roster for years. 'Nuff Said.
