Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Part 3: After The Gold Rush

Jimmy Howard shuts down the Pens 3-1 then face-washes Crosby to cap things off. This kid's a keeper.

Also, there's nothing like an arena full of red-blooded Americans (and people from Windsor) shouting "CROSBY SUCKS! CROSBY SUCKS!" to make you proud of your country.

These same idiots that were going, "Luuuuuuu!" for Luongo just a few weeks ago.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Part 3: After The Gold Rush

Ok hear me out....

The NHL needs a "hated" player like Cindy. To quote Vince McMahon of WWF/E fame...."You can sell a heel better than a face." Cindy brings hatred to him, and brings love for whoever faces him. You feel something. You get into the game. If it's some no-namer that checks Cindy until no tomorrow, you're gonna find out who that guy is, so you can laud him. The NHL needs a good "bad" guy.

Now, I'm not saying bad guys like Cooke, Kunitz, etc are worthy of this. You need some prima donna to really hate. And Cindy is that guy. Face it, if Cindy wasn't a whiner, would as many people be interested? The diehards, sure. The casuals? I dunno. The casuals hear about how he's a whiner, a little beech, etc, and tune in (hopefully) to see what the fuss is about. And he's SUCH a little crybaby, that they see that emotion, and maybe get hooked in a little.

Is it good for the sport? On a pure scale, naw, probably not. I hate the whiny crap. Take your lumps like a man. However, nothing else has worked, and eventually Cindy will have moved on, and MAYBE the fans will decide to stay because they learned how great the sport is.

Yeah, we know that. Doesn't mean we have to like it. ;)

Besides, everything I've ever heard says that Gretzky was "that guy" 25 years ago, and now no one can speak any ill of him.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Part 3: After The Gold Rush

I hated him before that. Prissy no-check-taking pansy-arse.

No one hit him because if they did Semenko or McSorely would fist that guy's face.

Also Gretzky was kind of a good skater. At least Gretz never punched another guy's yambag from behind while he was down on the ice.

1. Agreed.
2. Also agreed.

I haven't hated someone like this since Mike Madonna's days here, and before that, it was indeed The Great One.

As if I wasn't a big fan of Jimmy Howard to begin with... that's awesome. I miss heckling him with Grand Rapids, but **** is it good to have him play this good with the Wings.

As for Abbotsford, I give them one more year before they bail. Even with the impending "westward expansion" the AHL is taking.

When I was a kid everyone loved Gretzky. The only ones who probably didn't were the diehards. Casual hockey fan (including myself) thought he was friggin awesome and he was pretty much the only reason the NHL was relevant. I think you are completely wrong on this one.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Part 3: After The Gold Rush

Who is moving?

Edmonton is finally using their dormant franchise and placing a team in Oklahoma City for next season. No word yet on a name.

Dave Andrews has said that they will have 30/30 next season. (30 NHL teams, 30 AHL teams)

Des Moines still has a dormant AHL franchise since the ownership were idiots and put the franchise as collateral for a loan (violation of league rules). New owners could theoretically buy the franchise as long as they keep the team there (city of Des Moines rules, the current owners owe the city at least a million every year there isn't AHL hockey).

And there was rumblings that the California teams may try to push to get their AHL affiliates to California. LA Kings own the Ontario Reign, Anaheim has a vested interest in the <strike>Stockton Thunder</strike> sorry, wrong team, the Bakersfield Condors. Then again, there is a rumor that Anaheim is going to partner with the Syracuse Crunch.

Abbotsford was supposed to be a "test" market by Calgary to see if the Westward Expansion is possible.

The Yotes take on the Blackhawks tonight, with the top of the West at stake, and the Yotes going for their 10th straight win. Go Yotes!

And anyone who would have predicted this to happen before the season started would have been driven straight to the funny farm. What a turnaround by that team.

I saw these two teams play on November 5th in Phoenix...If you would have told me they would be playing again tonight for first place in the West I would laughed in your face.

With that said...Go Yotes!

My sister lives out in Gilbert now working as a school psychologist. I might have to jump on the Yotes bandwagon for the playoffs and see if I can get out there for a game during the playoffs.

Has attendance gotten any better yet?

I think there may have been 10K people...probably closer to 8K when I was there in November and I'd say atleast half were Hawks fans.

Its amazing what happens when you realize that being a great player doesn't mean you are a great coach.

My understanding is that attendance has gone up a lot. Unfortunately they're on the road most of the time down the stretch, so their season attendance numbers are weighted heavily to the early season which reflected things like they hadn't sold season tickets for at least a lot of the offseason, hadn't advertised at all, etc. 5 of their last 6 have been on the road, and 12 of their last 15 are on the road overall. But, their one home game last week drew, 17,534. They still don't get a lot of coverage in the local media, but that's slowly starting to turn.
