2009-2010 NHL Season Part 3: After The Gold Rush

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Part 3: After The Gold Rush

The Rangers might have less puck awareness than any team in the league.

Stupid stupid stupid team. It's like they're the only ones who don't realize the ref is calling a penalty on the other team.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Part 3: After The Gold Rush

As a Rangers fan, I'm not complaining, but I think the NHL made a mistake and hired the Hockey East refs for this game...

Seriously. That's now two fictional hooks against the Rangers after a lot of things they could have called on the team.

Makes no sense.

And what the hell is wrong with Jokinen. If he wants to take stupid penalties, make a late mortgage payment, don't go doing stupid crap in the offensive zone or retaliating against Chara.

Hey it's a delayed call and we're on the PP. Instead of passing it to them, let's ice the puck! Since icing is negated, instead of a 30 second 5 on 3, we get a 11 second 5 on 3 which has everyone on the face-off playing for the man coming out of the box instead of being aggressive.

This team is coached very poorly.

600 for Teemu Selanne. Congrats to a future HOF'er.

My goodness what happened to Nabokov? He's single-handedly destroying my fantasy team in the playoffs. I keep sending him out there thinking this is the night he turns it around...Edmonton? Really?

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Part 3: After The Gold Rush

Well, Edmonton did try to wreck the Red Wings on Friday night.

Stay the heck away from any Shark right now. I watched 2 of them chase the puck while another tried to sell a crosscheck while an Edmonton guy calmly stood, waiting for a rebound just outside the blue and roofed it.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Part 3: After The Gold Rush

The Bruins are so endless incompetent that no team is truly out of the hunt for 8th.

Including the Atlanta Thrashers, who (after a stretch where they couldn't beat anyone) won their 4th straight last night, taking their 2nd in a row from the also-incompetent Philadelphia Flyers. The Senators are also incompetent. And despite their winning 6 of 7 (and taking points in all of them), their play against Toronto and Edmonton shows that the Canadiens can't be counted on the list of the competent, either.

Count the Rangers out. But those 5 teams battling for 4 spots will be pretty fascinating.

Snippets from today's Toronto Sun: :D

El Nino is having such a huge effect on the weather, the San Jose Sharks actually started their spring collapse a month early this year ... Good line from a San Jose beat reporter following a routine Miikka Kiprusoff save: “I didn’t know goalies could kick rebounds to their own team.”

I also have Thornton and Heatley. :( Picked a bad time to go cold on me, San Jose. I've lived off my Sharks all year...

To put things in perspective, the WC t-11th place Stars have as many points as the EC 8th place Bruins (though Dallas has played one extra game).

So Calgary's experiment of moving their AHL club closer to home may be backfiring...

http://www.theprovince.com/sports/C...bbotsford+Heat+hockey+team/2696308/story.html

Some Abbotsford residents are furious that local taxpayers are being forced to support the Abbotsford Heat professional hockey team.

Council approved a deal with the Heat on Monday that will guarantee the team its $5.7-million annual expenses, regardless of fan support, which is 34-per-cent below expectations.

The subsidies absolve the team from paying its $200,000 annual rent at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre unless a profit is made.

Sixty per cent of any profits will go to the team and just 40 per cent to the city.
The $82-million arena, which seats 7,000 for hockey, was built with taxpayers' dollars last year.

The city has provided space for a team gift shop, practice is free for both the Heat and their visitors, and the city will assist with the $250,000 purchase of better video equipment.

Vince Dimanno, president of the Abbotsford Ratepayers Association, said the subsidy amounts to a $57-million "liability" over the 10-year length of the deal.
At season's end -- the team is currently still playing -- the Heat will likely be given a $275,000 operating subsidy. That's because the 3,300 average attendance has not generated enough revenue to cover its $5.7-million expenses.

Council's subsidies aren't limited to the hockey team. More than $2 million has been set aside in 2010 to offset arena operations, at a time when the city is having trouble repairing roads.

Kaetler said taxpayers were asked to be prepared for a city gasoline tax because the road-repair budget is $18 million short.

"Other worthy projects, such as vulnerable groups, will not get funds," she said.

Dimanno said council is considering shutting down the Matsqui community pool because there is no money for a $70,000 upgrade.

Those hockey-mad Canadians will fill arenas to watch the sport at any level, eh? ;) (kidding)

When you think about it, it's not too surprising. They spent a ton of money on a brand spanking new arena, gave them a ton of taxpayer-footed incentives, and ignored the fact that most of the town would probably rather watch the Canucks than the archrival Flames' farm team.

You know its funny... there's been a fair local mention in Hartford that "if only the whalers fans got over their hate of the Rangers then they'd accept the Wolfpack"

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Part 3: After The Gold Rush

Jimmy Howard shuts down the Pens 3-1 then face-washes Crosby to cap things off. This kid's a keeper.

Also, there's nothing like an arena full of red-blooded Americans (and people from Windsor) shouting "CROSBY SUCKS! CROSBY SUCKS!" to make you proud of your country.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Part 3: After The Gold Rush

Jimmy Howard just became my favorite Red Wing.
