122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

Re: 122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

19. Oakland Raiders

(a.k.a. Los Angeles Raiders and soon to be Las Vegas Raiders)
Why? Commitment to Excellence in Relocations and Coaching Changes

The Good. 3 Super Bowls, 4 AFC Championships (1976, 1980, 1983, 2002), a dominant team from the late 1960’s’ to early 1980’s.

The Bad. Very little has occurred in the last 30 years. Even after appearing in Super Bowl XXXVII, it would take 14 seasons before the Raiders had another winning season. Seven straight double-digit loss seasons from 2003-2009.

The Ugly. Al Davis, went from coach to majority owner during the Raiders first few seasons. Davis was a maverick owner who broke conventional wisdom. After the 1981 season, Davis saw an opportunity to move from Oakland to Los Angeles, after the Rams decided to move from the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to suburban Anaheim. The NFL rejected the relocation. Davis moved the team anyway and was blocked by an injunction. The Raiders and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum filed an anti-trust lawsuit against the NFL. The first jury was a mistrial, the second jury ruled in favor of Davis.

Davis never got the updates, amentities, and luxury boxes that were promised from Los Angeles. When Oakland promised to provide updates to the aging Oakland-Alameda Coliseum, including a new 10,000 seat section sarcastically known as Mount Davis. The City of Oakland also built new training facilities and moving costs. Since the NFL, never recognized the Raiders move to Los Angeles in the first place, they could not vote on the Raiders return to Oakland.

Where they play. Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, for now. The Raiders currently play in the smallest NFL stadium, despite the building of Mount Davis, many of those seats are tarped up now. Despite the announcement that the Raiders will move to Las Vegas in 2020, the Raiders will continue to play in Oakland until the stadium is ready rather than playing at the UNLV Campus.

The 2010’s had been all about finding a home for the Raiders, the Coliseum is considered the NFL’s worst stadium. Attempts failed to move with the 49ers to Levi’s Stadium. A new development to keep the Raiders and Golden State Warriors in Oakland failed when the Warriors decided to move back to San Francisco. An attempt on a dual use stadium with the Oakland A’s never materialized. An attempt to San Antonio didn’t go anywhere. A joint attempt with the Chargers to build a new stadium was rejected by the NFL owners in favor of the Rams new stadium. The NFL owners allowed the Chargers first dibs to be tenants on the new stadium before the Raiders. When the Chargers decided to move to Los Angeles, Oakland had to continue to look for a new home. A few weeks after the Chargers decision the Raiders worked on moving to Las Vegas. When there were funding issues with the new stadium, San Diego who had just lost the Chargers made a proposal for the Raiders to move further down south. The NFL stated that San Diego would need a new stadium and the Rams and the Chargers would block anyone from moving to Southern California, especially the Raiders.

Owner: Mark Davis, son of Al Davis took over the team when Al died in 2011.

Coach: Jon Gruden was hired after the 2017 season ended after coach Jack Del Rio got fired. Gruden originally coached the Raiders from 1998-2001. Gruden was actually traded and became Tampa Bay’s next coach, was there from 2002-2008. Ironically in his first season Tampa Bay beat the Raiders in the Super Bowl.

Top Current Players: Derek Carr, Jared Cook, Khalil Mack

Hall of Famers: Jim Otto, George Blanda, Willie Brown, Gene Upshaw, Fred Biletnikoff, Mike Haynes, Howie Long, Dave Caspar, Marcus Allen, Ray Guy, Tim Brown, Ken Stabler, John Madden, and Al Davis

I never took the opinion Oakland should be crucified for that... LOL

But I have always believed without that ruling (the biggest BS ruling in the history of sports), the dynasty doesn't turn out quite the way it did.

I blame Mo Lewis more.

Re: 122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

18. Baltimore Ravens

Why? A team named after a poem, nevermore.

The Good. 2 Super Bowls, 4 AFC North Titles, 10 playoff appearances in 22 seasons.

The Bad. Worst season was the inaugural season in 1996 (4-12), went 24-39-1 in the 1990’s.
Ugly: Not so much on the field but off. After a party following Super Bowl XXXIV, Ray Lewis was in a party whose friends stabbed two people, blood was found in Lewis’s limo. Lewis was allowed to plea bargain in exchange for testifying against the other defendants and agreed to plead guilty for Obstruction of Justice.

In March 2014, star running back Ray Rice was arrested for third-degree aggravated assault, related to hitting his finance. Initially given a two-game suspension. The video of the assault showed that Rice knocked out his fianace and dragged her out of the video, that changed many people’s mind about the NFL and domestic violence. The appalling nature of the act led the NFL to terminate Rice’s contract. Rice filed and won an appeal stating he was already suspended thus double jeopardy. The incident made Rice so radioactive that no NFL team would ever sign him.

Owner: Steve Bisciotti, who is one tough Italian cookie, owns several technical staffing firms. Bisciotti bought the team from Art Modell in 2004, Modell is infamous for moving the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore after the 1996 season*. As a reminder, the Browns colors, logos, and history remain in Cleveland and the Ravens are treated like an expansion team.

Coach: John Harbaugh, a career coach who just finished his tenth season with the Ravens, this includes one Super Bowl win.

Top Current Players: Joe Flacco, Mike Wallace, and Terrell Suggs

Hall of Famers: Jonathan Ogden and Ray Lewis.

Yeah, but it's a cool poem!

And a cool nickname.

However, just don't tell Baltimoreans that Poe actually wrote The Raven in NYC, and not his hometown of Baltimore. True story.

Re: 122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

17. Boston Red Sox

Why? They’re ruining your summah!

The Good. Won the majority of their World Series Championships before the end of World War I

The Bad. 86 year Championship drought done in a fashion to make their fans have blue balls.

The Ugly. It is easy to say that moment when owner Harry Frazee sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees, but that is way too easy. Frazee bought the Red Sox in 1916. After winning the World Series in 1918, they finished sixth in 1919. It is true that Frazee was more interested in theatre production rather than baseball.
A feud between Frazee and American League President Ban Johnson had a lot to play in this. Johnson did not care for Frazee, and Frazee was critical of Johnson on how he handled the league during World War I. In the summer of 1919, Red Sox starter Carl Mays left the team complaining of a lack of run support. Johnson ordered Mays suspended, Frazee in turn sold Mays to the Yankees. The Mays situation put the American League in two camps, one side involving the Red Sox, Yankees, and White Sox. The other side involving the remaining five teams or “The Loyal Five”. “The Loyal Five” were fiercely on Johnson’s side leaving Frazee to deal with only the White Sox and the Yankees.
While Babe Ruth was Boston’s biggest star, he was also uncontrollable. Frazee was all set to trade Ruth to the White Sox for “Shoeless” Joe Jackson. However, Jackson was banned from baseball after the “Black Sox” scandal. With the White Sox reputation shot, when Frazee wanted to unload all of his talent, the only offers were coming from the Yankees.

Where they play. Fenway Park, often mistaken for a toilet is the oldest ballpark in the league.

Owner: John Henry, Henry actually owned the Florida Marlins from 1999-2002, until a trade of sorts was made in which Henry bought the Red Sox and sold the Marlins to then-Expos owner Jeffrey Loria.

Coach: Alex Cora, 13 year career as a player, was Houston’s bench coach for their World Series title last October.

Top Current Players: Mookie Betts, Chris Sale, and Wally the Green Monster

Hall of Famers: Wade Boggs, Jimmy Collins, Joe Cronin, Bobby Doerr, Rick Ferrell, Carlton Fisk, Jimmie Foxx, Lefty Grove, Harry Hooper, Pedro Martinez, Herb Pennock, Jim Rice, Ted Williams, and Carl Yastrzemski.

This is fascinating. I didn't know 90% of this.

I'm going to (literally, as you'll see) hold my nose and defend Sawx Nation. Fenway Park is the best park in baseball. It is absolutely true that it smells like a toilet (this is literally true, not Boston hate -- the only place I've ever seen/otherwise sensed that was worse was the old Durham Bulls park where for fifty years people used to relieve themselves under the bleachers. That was a Urine 10, Fenway is a Urine 7. Fenway smells like the NY subway system in 1977).

But... Fenway is exactly how a ballpark ought to FEEL. Wrigley is a distant second and nobody else deserves consideration since they tore down Tiger Stadium.

So, to review. Boston: meh, not bad for an overpopulated Providence. Bostonians: pathetic losers. Fenway: a nearly perfect gem.

As a lifetime Sox fan, I beg to disagree. Fenway has to go. They try to put lipstick on the pig with renovations (though the Green Monster seats were a work of genius) but the park is 106 years old. The seats are uncomfortable, the leg room is non existent (think Spirit Airlines) and it is undercapacity by about 5,000 seats.

But - where do you build a new park in Boston? Answer-nowhere unless you go to Suffolk Downs but that's reserved (pending NIMBY suits) for Amazon. The politicians are corrupt and the neighbors are hostile to change. Fenway is a historical site (improvements are expenses, not amortized) and to tear it down and rebuild in situ would be an impossible feat.

The revenue stream is therefore limited and you can't squeeze the gullible much longer charging the highest prices in MLB.

The analogy to the NYC subway system was perfect.
