122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

Re: 122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

71. San Jose Sharks

Where they play. SAP Center, where the fans are treated like saps. As an expansion team the Sharks played at the Cow Center until the San Jose Arena was ready for them.

It's called the Cow Palace. I actually went to a Sharks game there.

Here's the irony of that...

I was in San Jose for a conference. The hotel I was staying in overlooked the construction site for the new arena. Instead of being able to walk to the game, I had to drive whatever time through awful traffic into a forsaken part of San Francisco to watch the game in a sh*tbox of an arena. (Though, you were close to the action.)

They played the Capitals. It was hysterical listening to the at the time novice, ignorant fans make comments about the game of hockey... Clueless doesn't describe it.

And yes, I did the Shark chomp. When in Rome...

Daly City. It's an extremely unpleasant place, dominated by Filipino Poors and bull necked white trash cops. It's the kind of place where when they put out their trash you could easily make a mistake and take the whole house. Helluva crime rate, too. When I was at Stanford well-scrubbed undergrads used to go up there for drugs and sometimes wouldn't come back. One less fresh-faced snotty little rich kid in the world, oh well.

So they were among the leaders in one season?

Was this tangent not about the best team for one season? Not saying the 85 Bears are #1 but they're in the discussion and it's not only because of the defense for those paying attention.

'85 Bears are in conversation about best team for one season (certainly top 5!).

Bears franchise also should be in top 15-20 of all franchises given their longevity, their importance to the NFL in general (Halas / founder / T formation), and the number of games and Championships won (# 2 all time)

Also, Bears have one of the best theme songs of any franchise ("Bear Down, Chicago Bears").

and perhaps the greatest recurring sports comedy bit on SNL ("Da Bears" with John Goodman et al).

History of the song here http://www.chicagobears.com/fan-zone/fight-song.html

Re: 122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

Nor does anyone count the 85 Bears as the greatest team ever. They were fun to watch. They were one of the greatest defenses ever until Seattle's rise. But their offense couldn't win the ACC.

Someone is forgetting about the Ray Lewis-led Ravens' defense the year they won the Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer. Trent Effing Dilfer.

Re: 122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

Daunte Culpepper did as well didn’t he?

Google searching it, Brad is the only player to catch his own touchdown pass. There have been others that have caught their own passes, though. I didn't see if Culpepper was one of them. Favre and Alex Smith have, I am sure other have done so as well.

Favre and Alex Smith have
Favre's pass to himself was his 1st NFL completion(a loss of 7 yards btw).

70. Milwaukee Bucks

Why? Nobody wants to play in Milwaukee, ask Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

The Good. They were gifted Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with the first pick in the NBA Draft in 1969, then traded for Cincinnati Royals legend Oscar Robinson and the Bucks won the NBA Championship in 1971 and remained a contender through the early 1970’s

The Bad. While still a decent team in the 1980’s, the Bucks nosedived in the 1990’s, only advancing past the first round once (2001).

The Ugly. When Kareem Abdul-Jabbar demanded a trade to either the Knicks or Lakers, it confirms that Milwaukee is just small potatoes and if they have any real talent they have to fork over a lot of money for them to stay in Milwaukee.

Where they play. BMO Harris Bradley Center, currently the 3rd oldest NBA Arena which will be replaced next season. Why? Adam Silver declared the arena outdated and unsuitable for NBA Play. Silver then mandated that the Bucks relocate or play in a new facility. The Wisconsin Senate signed a bill for a taxpayer funded building. Governor Walker signed the bill in 2015, (yeah the same guy who is slashing teachers benefits). Just like Kareem Abudl-Jabbar, nobody really wants to live in Milwaukee or Wisconsin for that matter.

Owner: Wesley Edens, Marc Lasry, Jamie Dinan. The Bucks used to be owned by former U.S. Senator Herb Kohl from 1985 to 2014, so that the franchise could stay in Milwaukee.

Coach: Jason Kidd, former standout NBA point guard, playing 19 seasons with the Mavs, Nets, Suns, and Knicks. Currently in his fourth season coaching the Bucks

Top Current Players: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton, and Eric Bledsoe

Hall of Famers…I did mention that Kareem started his career here, Oscar Robertson finished his career here.

Up Next….The Minnesota Vikings

Had no idea about this. The Knicks must really be glad they saved that money...

69. Baltimore Orioles

(a.k.a. St. Louis Browns)

Why? Some O’s fans might be a little crabby about this listing but you have to take into account its history as the St. Louis Browns.

The Good. 3 World Series titles, (1966, 1970, 1983) The Orioles best days were in the late 60’s to the early 80’s.

The Bad. Last original American League team to win the World Series. As the Browns, they only won one pennant (1944) and still ended up being the second best team in St. Louis, as they lost to the crosstown Cardinals. As the Orioles, they were largely irrelevant in the 2000’s.

The Ugly. Ironically these Browns also moved to Baltimore and this affair was just as messy. By 1951, Bill Veeck became owner of the Browns, he was famous for putting Eddie Gaedel, all 3 foot 7 inches of him to pinch hit. Veeck was losing the St. Louis market to the Cardinals as the team was bought by the Busch Family (i.e. Budweiser). Veeck tried to move the Browns to Milwaukee but was blocked by MLB as the Braves moved there. Baltimore was next, while the American League ok’d the move, they also forced Veeck to sell the Browns now to be Baltimore Orioles.

Where they play. Oriole Park at Camden Yards, one of the first ‘retro’ ballparks made in the 1990’s, a highly praised stadium. The park was partially built for fear the Orioles would leave Baltimore just like the Baltimore Colts did after the 1983 season.

Owner: Peter Angelos, bought the team from Eli Jacobs in 1993, and Angelos put in money to make the Orioles a contender which led to some short term success in the mid-1990’s as the Orioles received more attention with Cal Ripken’s consecutive game streak in the news.

Manager: Buck Showalter, 3x AL Manager of the Year with three different team, Showalter has taken a moribund Orioles into a more respectable team.

Top Current Players: Manny Machado (for now), Jonathan Schoop, and Adam Jones

Hall of Famers…George Sisler, Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Jim Palmer, Eddie Murphy, Cal Ripken, Jr.

Up Next….The Minnesota Vikings

Re: 122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

Bill Veeck was all set to run the Cardinals out of town (Veeck owned the ballpark) as long as Fred Saigh was the owner. The came Gussie Busch and the Budweiser money and suddenly it was the other way around.

For any sports fan, I would heartedly recommend 2 books by/on Bill Veeck - "Veeck as in Wreck" which was about his career in sports through his 1st ownership of the White Sox and "30 Tons a Day" about his ownership of Suffolk Downs in Boston. If you want to get an insight on how the Commonwealth and Boston really work, read that one.

68. Orlando Magic

Why? While the name is teased with Walt Disney World’s Magical Kingdom, the Orlando Magic is comparison are more like The Magical Sublet or The Magical Couch Surfing Experience.

The Good. With help from the draft (Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Webber*) in the early 1990’s the Magic were the first among the late 80’s expansion to make it to the NBA Finals. Had a bad 2004 and was able to draft Dwight Howard which led to a second Eastern Conference Championship in 2009. *-Webber was traded on draft day for Penny Hardaway.

The Bad. When Shaq left the Magic to sign with the Lakers, the Magic went from contender to mid-card status. When Dwight Howard demanded a trade, the Magic have been all but forgotten.

The Ugly. The last time the Magic were in the playoffs, Dwight Howard was on the team, and that was three teams ago. Stan Van Gundy was the head coach, who is not putting some energy into the Detroit Pistons. Despite the sunny, touristy location, the Orlando Magic is not a place where a star lasts.

Where they play. Amway Center, built in downtown Orlando in 2010 replaced the Amway Arena (Orlando Arena). Already losing money due to the team’s lack of success and the bonds used to pay for the arena are now at junk bond status.

Owner: Richard DeVos, founder of Amway, which is known for its door to door cosmetic sales.

Coach: Frank Vogel, currently in his second year coaching the Magic after coaching the Indiana Pacers for five years. Vogel has the most wins of any coach in the Indiana Pacers NBA History.

Top Current Players: Nikola Vucevic, Evan Fournier, and Elfrid Payton

Hall of Famers…Shaquille O’Neal and Tracy McGrady
