122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

Re: 122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

To add to CommAv's post, the 30 For 30 on the Magic was quite good. No surprise.

Re: 122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

67. Buffalo Bills

Why? Nobody circles the wagons like the Buffalo Bills, nobody can smash a table jumping from the top of an RV more than the fans of the Bills.

The Good. Four consecutive AFC Championships 1990-93, O.J. Simpson became the first player to run for 2000 yards in 1973.

The Bad. Currently, have the longest playoff drought in the NFL not having appeared since the 1999 Music City Miracle. Terrible teams in the late 60’s to early 70’s terrible in the late 70’s and mid-80’s. Consecutive 2-14 seasons in 1984 and 1985.

The Ugly. Losers of four consecutive Super Bowls. Heavily favored in the first one against the Giants but lost on a missed field goal by kicker Scott Norwood. Lost to Washington the second time around then two consecutive losses to Dallas. The City of Buffalo is now 0 for 6 on Major Championship Finals.

Where they play: New Era Field. Originally called Rich Stadium in suburban Orchard Park, the Bills renamed the field Ralph Wilson Stadium after its original owner. Renamed New Era Field in 2016.

Owner: Terry Pegula, as mentioned with the Sabres entry owns most of Western New York.

Coach: Sean McDermott, a longtime assistant who in his short history of a head coach we know he doesn’t know when to bench a quarterback.

Top Current Players: LeSean McCoy, Tyrod Taylor, and Preston Brown

Hall of Famers… O.J. Simpson, Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Andre Reid, Bruce Smith.

Up Next….The Minnesota Vikings

But they did spawn the LA Clippers. Also had the Blues of the Federal League in baseball, who include the immortal Ed Porray, born "on a ship somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean on December 5, 1888."

No idea but why but upon entering this thread this RHCP' song just popped into my head:

L. A. Lakers fast break makers
Kings of the court shake and bake all takers
Back to back is a bad @s$ fact a claim that remains intact
M-a-g-i-c see you on the court
Buck has come to play his way and his way is to thwart
M-a-g-i-c magic of the buck
Other teams pray for dreams
But he don't give a f##k

66. Colorado Avalanche

(a.k.a. Quebec Nordiques)
Why? You poor people of Quebec City, you suffer through most of the late 80’s and early 90’s, starting seeing the Nordiques playing well, then move to Denver and win the Stanley Cup in its first year.

The Good. The Avalanche have won the Stanley Cup twice (1996, 2001) and had their heyday in the early 90’s in Quebec until the late 2000’s. At best, the Nordiques appeared in the Wales Conference Finals in 1982 and 1985.

The Bad. In Quebec, the Nords were the worst team in the NHL from 1987-1992. As the Avalanche, they currently have missed the playoffs 7 of the last 9 seasons.

The Ugly. Eric Lindros was considered to be the best hockey prospect since Mario Lemieux. Quebec had the #1 Pick 1991. Lindros warned Quebec that he would hold out rather than play for them. The Nordiques selected Lindros anyway, and Lindros sat out. The Nordiques offered a 10 year $50million contract, Lindros refused. Right before the 1992 Draft, Quebec agreed to trade Lindros. Quebec traded Lindros to both Philadelphia and the New York Rangers. A verbal agreement was made with Philadelphia, Nordiques President Marcel Aubut had second thoughts and then tried to trade Lindros to the New York Rangers. The Flyers filed a complaint saying the verbal agreement was valid. An arbitrator agreed with the Flyers. The Flyers unloaded enough talent to make Quebec an instant contender. The Flyers never won the Stanley Cup with Eric Lindros.
Aubut playing in the smallest NHL market at the time, asked the Quebec Provincial Government for a bailout and taxpayer funded arena, when that didn’t happen the team was sold to a Denver based company that moved the franchise to Colorado.

Where they play: The Pepsi Center, opened in 1999 to replace the McNichols Arena home to the Denver Nuggets.

Owner: Ann Walton Kroenke, wife of Stan Kroenke who owns the Los Angeles Rams, part of the Walmart Family Fortune.

Coach: Jared Bednar, currently in his second season with the Avalanche, finished in last place last year and this year doesn’t look any better.

Top Current Players: Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantenen, Tyson Barrie

Re: 122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

65. Philadelphia Eagles

Why? The team that once had a courtroom in their stadium, because the fans are amongst the worst of the worst. The Eagles can’t have nice things, they currently have the best record in football and then their quarter goes down for the season.

The Good. They had a brief run of success in the late 1940’s winning the NFL Championship in 1948 and 1949. Their third NFL Championship in 1960 came by beating Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers. The Eagles were the only team to defeat Lombardi’s Packers in the playoffs. In the Super Bowl era, the Eagles won 2 NFC Championships (1980, 2004)

The Bad. Other than the late 1940’s and the 1960 NFL Championship, the Eagles would not be in the playoffs again until 1978. Most of the 1980’s & 1990’s were a trainwreck.

The Ugly. The time Eagle Fans booed Santa Claus. About to finish 2-12 in 1968, The Eagles started 0-11 and could have tanked and select O.J. Simpson but won the next two games, allowing Buffalo to select The Juice. It snowed the night before in Philadelphia and the fans had to clear their own seats. Despite the bad weather, Eagle Fans were treated to a Christmas Halftime Parade. The cheerleaders were elves, but the field was a muck, and float got stuck, and the original Santa was too drunk to perform. A fan who happened to be wearing a Santa Suit was offered the role. The fans started to pelt Santa with snowballs. The motive remains in doubt, the stand-in was not exactly fat and jolly but some feel it’s a microcosm of the fans feelings of the Eagles ownership.

Where they play: Lincoln Financial Field, otherwise known as “The Link”. The Link replaced the old Veterans Stadium a multi-purpose stadium that fit the Phillies and the Eagles.

Owner: Jeffrey Lurie, heir to the General Cinema empire, bought the Eagles in 1994. Lurie’s ex-wife received a large portion of the Eagles in the divorce settlement.

Coach: Doug Pederson, a former backup quarterback, who played in both the NFL and WLAF’s NY/NJ Knights and the Rhein Fire.

Top Current Players: Carson Wentz, Zack Ertz, Malcom Jennings

Hall of Famers, Chuck Bednarik, Steve Van Buren, Reggie White

Re: 122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

64. New York Islanders

Why? This ranking was appropriate, in the 1980’s the Commodore 64 was a top of the line desktop computer. In the 1980’s the New York Islanders were one of the best franchises in sports. Both the Commodore and the Islanders have not aged well since.

The Good. Four consecutive Stanley Cups (1980, 1981, 1982, 1983). A record 19 consective playoff series won. Made it to the NHL Semifinals nine out of ten seasons from 1975-1984.

The Bad. Ownership mishaps throughout the franchises existence. As the Islanders started to decline they would start to bottom out in the mid 90’s and not return to its glory days.

The Ugly. In 1995, the Islanders decided to update their logo, they came out with the fisherman logo. The new logo was such a disaster that they reverted back to the original logo as soon as NHL rules allowed them to do so.

Where they play: Barclays Arena, for now the home of the Islanders as they will build a new arena near Belmont Park. For the decades the Islanders played in the Nassau County Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Long since considered obsolete, the Islanders for decades tried to build a new home but details details

Owner: Jon Ledecky and Scott Malkin. Both bought the majority of shares from Charles Wang in 2016. In case you are wondering he is the uncle of swimming legend Katie Ledecky

Coach: Doug Weight, a former Lake Superior State standout, had a 21 year NHL career with several teams. Replaced John Capuano midseason last year.

Top Current Players: John Tavares, Josh Bailey, Anders Lee, Jordan Eberle

Hall of Famers: Denis Potvin, Bryan Trottier, Mike Bossy, Clark Gilles, Billy Smith, Pat LaFontaine.

Re: 122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

I wonder where we would have topped off at if this list was generated in, say, 1984?

The Isles are the textbook example of what happens when you hang on to your aging stars and do not either rebuild or even reload. I'll still trade the last 30 years for those first 15, though. It was worth it. :)

If you want to wonder..... remove those 4 yrs and y’all might be #121

63. Miami Marlins

(a.k.a. Florida Marlins)

Why? The Marlins are a paradox to rankings like this. What do you do when you’ve been around for 25 seasons, only had six winning seasons, and won the World Series twice. Add a few seasons where you are just terrible on top of that.

The Good. They have won two World Series Titles (1997, 2003). The Marlins have never lost a playoff round.

The Bad. Their 54-108 season in 1998 makes them by far the worst record for a defending World Series Champion.

The Ugly. As we have learned from this offseason, despite being in a big market, the Marlins just do not draw. In the bottom five in attendance each year, the Marlins management always seem to be in cost cutting mode.

Where they play: Marlins Park, a nice little boondoggle that is known as the place where Aaron Judge hit 47 home runs in one night. Lots of shady public funding for a stadium to move into Little Havana. You would think if a team has attendance problems you move somewhere where the entire metro area can get to.

Owner: Derek Jeter, the 2020 BBHOF inductee leads a coalition of investors who bought the team from Jeffrey Loria in 2017. Jeter didn’t make many new friends when the Marlins traded baseball’s best player Giancarlo Stanton to the Yankees. All Jeter is doing, is continuing the Marlins tradition of cutting payroll because nobody goes to the games. Previous owners include Loria (true scumbag), John Henry (now the Grand Wizard of the Red Sox), and Wayne Huizenga (used to own South Florida until people stopped caring about Blockbuster Video)

Manager: Don Mattingly, former Yankee all-star just finished his second season with the Marlins, Mattingly managed the Dodgers for five seasons prior.

Top Current Players: Christian Yelich, Justin Bour, Jose Urena

Hall of Famers: a few players had cups of coffee but usually got traded due to payroll.

Re: 122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

I think I speak for everyone, since they have no fans, when I say F-CK THE MARLINS.

Re: 122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

The ****ing Marlins are this high? You have to be ranking by mascots, colors, or logos. Right? A team with six winning seasons in their history can’t be average.
