Re: 116th Congress: Episode 1 - Trial by Fire

So, our elected officials don't know how taxes work?

Nice country.

Every day Republicans prove that for as much as we like to pretend it is good anyone can hold high office it is better that they DONT hold high office. I mean it is one thing not to be a policy wonk, it is another not to understand how basic tax structure works. I mean it is funny when we make people on this board look silly but this clown is in Congress!

For all the negatives things like Twitter bring about the best thing it did was allow dimwit morons a platform to prove how dimwitted they are. I am not talking about Trump I am talking about guys like this. 20 years ago he would have skated by on his military record and most likely failed upwards. (especially after the SNL...errr S & L fiasco) Sure people in Texas and Washington would know his fuse wasnt fully lit but the rest would have just talked about how he is a vet and never been the wiser. Twitter allows him to speak to the world so we can all see that most 5th graders are more qualified for the job he holds than he is.

Re: 116th Congress: Episode 1 - Trial by Fire

She's getting smarter every day. She's going to drive the GOP insane.

Republicans are used to lying with impunity. Democrats who fight back is a truly terrifying concept to them.

Bullies are always cowards. Trump is the perfect emblem of modern American conservatism. They've been pushing grannies down the stairs so long they are getting destroyed by one Freshman girl House Member.

It's no wonder Republicans are losing their ****ing minds over it.

Don’t worry. One of our resident republicans here will soon be along to explain how other nations systems are terrible. Systems they’ve never worked in or studied but somehow are experts on

Re: 116th Congress: Episode 1 - Trial by Fire

On topic, I came across this a couple of weeks ago but didn't post in all the excitement of yet another Patriots title, but here goes.

A bit wonky, but its a well thought out, detailed, and paid for plan (yes with higher taxes on the rich) to get to Medicare for all with the caveat that if you want to keep employer based insurance you can. I'd suggest a read if you have the time because this is Democrats actually solving problems, as opposed to Republicans taking money from Putin and then passing tax cuts for billionaires as the solution to every problem.

Re: 116th Congress: Episode 1 - Trial by Fire

Former US Representative from Michigan John Dingell has died at 92.

His wit on Twitter, and experiences in life will be missed.

Re: 116th Congress: Episode 1 - Trial by Fire

So I have a modest proposal on the Filibuster. Hear me out.

Get rid of the Senate. Sorry, dairy states.

Amend the House to require the following:

1. 50%+1 for bills to pass a law or appropriate funds (VP breaks a tie)
2. 60% to confirm a nomination
3. 67% to ratify a treaty or override a veto

Re: 116th Congress: Episode 1 - Trial by Fire

How about no but I give you a hardy thumbs up for effort?

I know the big states hate that small states get equal representation in the Senate but deal with it.

So, propose a new Constitution when we were just a few legislatures short of oligarchs rewriting it their way? I'm not sure you've thought this plan through.

I think that recent Patriots Super Bowl win took the last vestiges of sanity from Kep's head! :D

Yeah, the Senate is a necessary evil, getting rid for f it creates more problems than it solves. There are solutions though:

1. Admit DC and Puerto Rico as states.
2. Change terms to 4 years instead of 6.
3. Change the election timing so they’re all elected at the same time as Presidential elections.
4. Limit the scope of bills they can propose and pass while limiting the amount of changes they can make to ones passed in the House.
5. Increase the House to 600+ seats.

2 out of 5 ain't bad! Its beyond stupid that DC and PR don't have voting power in Congress. I also think the House would benefit greatly by increasing its size as it has done in the past to keep up with population growth.

A lot of the other things that people complain about would be solved with a 21st century update to the Voting Rights Act. House Dems have already crafted the bill and we'd all get a lot better representative democracy if it becomes law. IIRC all 3 ideas (admitting two new states, increasing House size, voting rights) can be done by a vote in Congress, not via an impossible to pass Constitutional amendment.

1. Yes.
2. No.
3. No.
4. No.
5. Yes.

If nothing is done to curtail the scope of the Senate then our problems will only get worse. I know you guys love your optimism but most red states aren’t changing any time soon, most of the places are either s-holes or quickly becoming one and most of the good folks are either leaving for blue states or planning on it. The Republicans will have at least 40 seats in the Senate for the near future, if not a majority. The best solution is to pass something like the Parliament Act of 1911 that limited the House of Lords, essentially give the Senate a say in things but limit its power.

Re: 116th Congress: Episode 1 - Trial by Fire

I know the big states hate that small states get equal representation in the Senate but deal with it.

Then redraw the states to be roughly equal in population.

I have no problem with that. I do have a problem that 40 million Californians have 2 Senators and 40 million midwesterners have 20.

The Constitution privileges rural over urban voters. That is not "equal" representation.

And still no. Sorry but the whole idea is stupid. You basically make half the country worthless. No offense but this is Drew level stupid.

We have a House based on population already. You don't get to have all of Congress based on that. The Coasters can friggin kiss my azz over that. Guess what people count that don't live within an hour of the Ocean and plenty of us vote Democrat so you best not cut off your nose to spite your face.
