Aye. We had another individual inducted into the ring of honor this past fall. His banner has a diagonal "RPI" as opposed to Puckman in the bottom corners. It is also becoming increasingly difficult to buy Puckman gear. The skating puck with the hard hat?!![]()
That's awful. That might be the only at RPI older than Ralph.
There was a covert, ill-conceived effort to do away with the term "Engineers" (including Puckman) in favor of renaming RPI's athletic teams "Redhawks"... No doubt it was some marketing wonk's idea of a progressive, gender neutral-ish, history-ignoring "improvement"...Awful. For a short while, they even attempted to present a RedHawk suited mascot to the Houston Field House faithful.
It didn't last long -- I think Puckman took "Tweetie" out to the woodshed and the change has apparently been abandoned. Puckman remains a fan fixture at HFH and the 'Hawk moniker has happily gone back to whatever dark place it came from.
All teams - men's & women's are once again referred to as the Engineers.
I'm not saying I have inside information, but this sounds awfully similiar to what happened to DU's mascot around the time of Appert's arrival as an assistant coach.
Thankfully, Boone has taken Ruckus out to the woodshed as well. I think Boone and Puckman would get along well.
For the record, Appert (and the Hockey staff) had nothing to do with Ruckus, DU's Red Tailed Hawk. That Hawk was foisted on school in 1999 by than-AD Dianne Murphy and then-Chancellor Dan Ritchie, both of whom hated Denver Boone for many reasons - male, beard, western Pioneer, and stood for the old D-II era. Addtionally, Boone was not all that loved in the 80s, but when given the wretched alternative of Ruckus, Boone started to look very good again once Ritchie and Murphy moved on in the mid 2000s...Today, the unnofficial Boone is gaining more and more acceptance, but still remains unnofficial.
Yeah, what was DU thinking? A male mascot for their flagship sport, with a beard, yet. And an historical linkage to the founding of Colorado. And designed by Walt Disney. Not Walt Disney enterprises, by Walt personally. Why would we want to have that, when we could have a red chicken with zero connection to the university? I mean, we all understand how bad men are, especially men with beards. And somewhere along the line a Colorado pioneer may have shot an indian in the azz. Domestic violence, patrimony and the maltreatment of native americans. It's a wonder we didn't have a legal tribunal to mete out justice for whoever was responsible.
But now the red chicken is in a bucket somewhere and "Boone" has taken his place. And even though the current chancellor is as PC as his predecessor, one wonders how long he can hold out on this issue. How many D-1 schools have an "unofficial" mascot? I'm guessing one. Stupid. But then, over the years, DU has frequently been the exclusive Rocky Mountain distributor of that.
