They were not required by law. It was basically up to them, given that he was a relative, is what I have read.

Color doesn't matter (as of now) in this case. Shooter was mentally disturbed. Pointing out race only furthers race division, IMO. If it turns out he was following some Neo-Nazi/racist belief in his crime, I will change my tune.

I'm sure he was just as colorblind. It's just a coincidence that everyone he killed was black.

Another black kid was killed by a cop who had been previously charged with a hate crime. Just another coincidence. I'm sure this post doesn't "help the cause" either.

Illinois law allows for giving the guns to a relative who is a legal owner when they are taken away from another relative. Illinois should simply change that law to destroy the guns that are confiscated from someone in a case like this.

Parkland.
Florida had state laws that were not enforced.
Plus, there are reports that the Parkland shooter had killed neighbors' pets which is a minor felony, but still a felony. And felons can not possess firearms.

for now. someone (backed by the NRA no doubt) will eventually get a supreme court ruling that this restriction is violating the constitutional rights of felons.

You don't lose your freedom of speech or religion with a felony, do you? My God, it is the same as Hitler to not let felons buy gunz!

I think they should be sold on GunBroker and proceeds should go to the owner.

No way the NRA backs that. They've always been silent when it comes to blacks and 2A, and since convicted felons are disproportionately black...

The NRA will move on blacks like a b-tch as whites become more educated and their gun ownership drops. Guns are 21st century cigarettes: they are a reverse class marker. The manufacturers will have no choice but to chase minorities. "I'm Billy Dee Williams for Sig Sauer."

Here's the sad facts. Source of firearms possessed by those ending up in federal prison:

Family or friend 35%
Retail Store 15%
Drug Dealer 15%
Black Market 9%
Burglary 9%
Other 6%
Pawnshop 4%
Borrowed 3%
Flea Market 2%
Gun Show 2%

The point is that even if you enforced the laws on the books - only 20% of gun sources are addressed - and then people just access guns through the other 80% of channels. Two things are needed...1) a major buyback to clean up the number of guns out there and 2) a seachange of major new legislation on the access and management of guns in the home.
