0 Days Since Last Shooting: But the Second Amendment!

The Waffle House wouldn’t have been prevented by enforcing any existing laws.

It's a Waffle House. There were likely health code violations that should have shut that location down a decade ago. This falls squarely on the Board of Health for the state of Tennessee.

Re: 0 Days Since Last Shooting: But the Second Amendment!

Here's the sad facts. Source of firearms possessed by those ending up in federal prison:

Family or friend 35%
Retail Store 15%
Drug Dealer 15%
Black Market 9%
Burglary 9%
Other 6%
Pawnshop 4%
Borrowed 3%
Flea Market 2%
Gun Show 2%

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_violence_in_the_United_States#/media/File:Firearmsources.svg

The point is that even if you enforced the laws on the books - only 20% of gun sources are addressed - and then people just access guns through the other 80% of channels. Two things are needed...1) a major buyback to clean up the number of guns out there and 2) a seachange of major new legislation on the access and management of guns in the home.

Part of the point I was trying to make when I originally posted about enforcing existing laws is to drive home how hard it will be to make ANY difference. We all know we should do every last thing we can to prevent these mass killings (or any killing). If rigorous enforcement of existing laws would have prevented ONE of the last twenty, let alone all of them, it should be done. And it hasn't been. Prosecutors and the rest of law enforcement are not exactly placing this among their top 2 or 3 priorities apparently.

I believe once a person has been convicted of ANY gun crime they should forfeit their rights to own or possess a firearm, and any firearms connected to them should be confiscated and destroyed. Maybe the sane gun owners (because the gunsexuals say the vast majority are sane and safe) would then do their part to make sure people like this WaffleHouse shooter did not get yet more guns to terrorize with.

But all of this ain't gonna matter a whit. Unless and until we repopulate congress and our state houses with people who will actually do something. They need to learn to ignore the NRA. Vote, vote, vote. Do whatever you need to to make it so you can vote by mail as well. Much harder to suppress vote by mail in poor neighborhoods.

Yeah. That's why its super sad that many spend all their days arguing for things like gun control and talking against people like Trump. But when the first Tuesday in November rolls around they say I'm just not voting for 'that' woman or I'm not voting because I wanted that other candidate.

I am hoping "that woman" was a one-off. But your point is definitely taken: Democrats have problems getting people to the polls. I think it's because we have voters under the retirement age.

People don't see the logic in voting for the lesser of two evils because they claim they are still voting for "evil." A LOT of this thinking was behind millions of people who voted for Obama not voting for Hillary. If they would just stop and think for a minute that if they keep voting for the "lesser of two evils" eventually they get to a candidate who ISN'T evil. Better people would run, the parties would promote and aid better people, and eventually we might get to an occasional election where both people running are honest and have the best interests of their community or the entire country at heart, just different ideas about how to improve lives. Somebody is going to win in every election. When it comes to national politics we can predict with almost universal certainty which of two candidates it will be. Vote for the one you think is less evil and eventually you will be voting FOR someone and not AGAINST someone.

Which is, in fact, how we got Obama. That was a candidate many of us were proud to vote for.

The tricky bit for ‘average’ people, which is most of the people who post here, is that funding comes from those with motives other than what is in the country’s best interest. No easy fix there given the supreme court’s ruling.

You think the average person posts here? We are white, college-educated males. In no way does this group of people represent the average American.

That’s why I put the quotations around average. I doubt many of us have the means to influence elections financially though.

Irony is seeing that post in a thread on guns.

So in your opinion white, college-educated males are above average persons? Below average persons?

Average what? Average "persons" in general, as Drew wrote? Average income? Average education level?

I'm curious what an "average person" in America looks like to you?

I graduated college in 1999. At that time, the "average" person did not have a 4-year degree.

At the time, for people in my age group...

60% of high school graduates attended college.
40% of those who attended college earned a degree.

We're doing simple math here, so only 24% of high school graduates earned a bachelor's degree or higher. High school graduation rates are not 100% of the population, so our numbers are closer to 20% of the overall population. Half that figure, roughly, and that's men with a college degree. Roughly half that again, and that's 5% of the nation were might men with a bachelor's degree or higher.

For starters, there are more women than men in America...

I kid. That's a Massachusetts 8.

Interesting information. It would lead me to ask: why so much consternation about a "gun show loophole" when it seems that's a low source of firearms used by criminals. Wouldn't we be better off improving the NICS system used by retail and pawn shop transactions?

The Waffle House wouldn’t have been prevented by enforcing any existing laws.

Waffle House guy had his firearms taken away and then returned to him by his father (through some process in Illinois law).

Knowingly giving a firearm to someone who is legally disallowed from possessing one is a crime. <-- Enforce that.

Or am I missing a detail.

You missed the 24-hour surveillance cameras that needed to be in his house to catch him giving his guns to his son.

Re: 0 Days Since Last Shooting: But the Second Amendment!

It seems we're treating the disease (murder by firearm) without addressing what causes a person to murder death kill.
