Re: 0 Days Since Last Shooting: But the Second Amendment!
The only solution that will work (have the effect of eliminating or substantially eliminating shooting deaths in this country) is effectively a ban on guns. That is, we'd have to pass laws that make it all but impossible to acquire a gun in this country, and that would result in the confiscation/buy back of existing weapons. As I've said repeatedly on this Board, the political and economic will for that action simply doesn't exist in this country at this point in time, no matter how many kids are killed in schools.
All of your other "gun control" is just so much feel good, ineffective nonsense. It's like trying to "control" drunk driving by banning all driving under the influence of beer. Hard liquor and wine? Have at it.
This is demonstrably untrue. Canada has a lot of guns, by some estimates a gun for every 3rd person. While the US has many more guns -- some estimate a gun for EVERY person -- most households actually DON'T have a firearm inside. Canada does not have the gun violence the U.S. has. Australia and Germany have as many guns per capita as Canada has, and THEY don't have the gun violence the U.S. has.
To an extent I do agree that some gun control is just so much feel good nonsense. But that is partially because gun control laws are not enough. We need strict enforcement and we need to make it clear to law enforcement nationwide we EXPECT strict enforcement. We are not getting it.
We also need better laws, period. Commit a gun crime, every gun you are connected to gets confiscated and destroyed. And by connected to I'd go as far as saying any gun in your household, regardless of ownership. Gun owners claim they are 100% committed to safety and responsibility? Well if they know some jacked up kid might cost daddy all HIS guns too and they might do a better job of keeping their guns out of reach.
We need better educational and employment opportunities too. We need better mental health education in our schools. All of that takes funding. Ammosexuals seem to have no problem funding a military that is so bloated it would take 20 seasons of "My 600 Pound Life" to cover it all, but God forbid we pay for real, effective mental healthcare in this country.
Finally, no one outside of the military need to possess "assault style" weapons. Eliminate guns that (or devices that make them) fire rapidly. Eliminate high capacity magazines. If you are a good guy with a gun and you need more than about 11 rounds to take down the bad guy with a gun, give it up. You are more likely to shoot your kid or your wife or your dog than the bad guy. Highly trained law enforcement personnel rarely hit what they fire at (hard to believe I know when some unarmed black guy seems to get shot by a cop every other day) so the idea that some random good guy civilian with a gun is to be our savior is laughable. Despite the fact there are 300,000,000 or more guns out there -- again most owned by good, law abiding citizens I'm told -- it hardly ever happens.
There are innumerable things that we can do to eliminate some or a lot of the gun violence in this country. I think the ammosexuals have had plenty of time to do things their way and it hasn't worked. Step aside and take your failure like mature men and women and give someone else a try. None of the things I advocate do anything to prevent sane, law abiding citizens from owning all sorts of weapons. I believe in the 2nd amendment. I just believe in a modern 21st century application of it, because, you know it IS the 21st century and things are absolutely nothing at all like they were in the 18th century.
