Re: 0 Days Since Last Shooting: But the Second Amendment!

Better quote 2nd time around.

I bet your Cornellians say that to all the Cantabs.

I come home, flip on Fios, and on BBC America it's Star Trek TOS. The episode? "Errand of Mercy." Odds of that -- 79:1

SPOCK: Captain, it took millions of years for the Organians to evolve into what they are. Even the gods did not spring into being overnight. You and I have no reason to be embarrassed. We did, after all, beat the odds.

KIRK: Oh, no, no, no, Mister Spock, We didn't beat the odds. We didn't have a chance. The Organians raided the game.

Re: 0 Days Since Last Shooting: But the Second Amendment!

Tuition at Cornell was almost $53,000 last year. Keep telling yourself that though. :)

Tuition for New York state residents enrolled in the contract colleges in 2019 will be $35,242.

Don't make it any worse than it is.

My first year at Cornell (1982) tuition was $2,470.

I don't believe Ivies give merit-based aid, but their need-based aid programs (at some schools, at least) are very generous. The burds are not wealthy by any means but we would not have qualified for any need-based aid at the kids' fall-back applications at Wisconsin or Minnesota (although I'm sure there would have been merit-based aid available). Our Columbia admit received generous grants and chose to go there. Still pretty expensive overall but not prohibitive for our middle class budget.

Minnesota didn’t do a lot of merit-based scholarships when I went there. Mainly minority and national programs (“scholarships you have heard of” kind of programs).

Same.
Must have been nice to have parents helping. Mine didn’t- wish their income wouldn’t have been used to deny me help like it was. They didn’t have money to help.

At least you’re paying for it now versus in 20-25 years. My wife and I are planning on having kids in the next few years and I think it’s a bigger financial challenge than retirement. Schools could easily be over $100k a year by then and I can see us getting caught in a similar situation to you where on paper it looks like we have money but the realty is we’re more middle class. My plan is to put away $1k a month into a 529 and cross my fingers.

Re: 0 Days Since Last Shooting: But the Second Amendment!

We now know the root cause.

Representative Diane Black, a Republican who is a candidate for Tennessee governor, drew criticism this week for saying that the “root” causes of gun violence included the “deterioration of family,” violent movies and widely available pornography.

Ban violent movies and porn you're 2/3 of the way there. In fact that alone may solve the other 1/3. No studies needed.
