World Soccer XXXI: Golden Generation?

Of note, with England out, that means that for 23rd time out of 23 World Cups the winning manager will be from the winning team’s country.

In the 21st century, only twice has the team who scored the opener in a World Cup semi-final gone on to lose the match.
Any guesses?

Those teams were England in 2018, and England in 2026

Chalk it up to the universe working things out, Spain and Argentina were supposed to meet in the Finalissima this spring, pitting the UEFA and Copa América champs together. It was supposed to be in Qatar, but you know, something’s happening in the Middle East that canceled that.

So now we get the Finalissima Ultima.

Oh boy! My social media feed has informed me we’re now at the “let’s oxygen to idiots and charlatans because they’re ‘outsiders’!” phase of US World Cup elimination. Because we really need to hear from Eric “I’ve been fired multiple coaching jobs because I’m not a good coach and a hot headed dick” Wynalda and Jermaine “I’ve been blackballed because I’m an abusive POS” Jones.

Of course, most of this oxygen is being given by people like Dan Patrick whose (now former) producer Seton O’Connor loves soccer and is no way related to the fact that Seton has an anti-MLS bent because his son is a competitive player who was rejected by an MLS academy (or possible financial interests in a USL club).

That’s the fun thing about US Soccer discourse: There’s no real “outsider” opinions. You’d be unsurprised to learn that most people who are anti-MLS and US Soccer “outsiders” are either a) a former coach/player who was rejected by the “system” because they weren’t good enough and they have an axe to grind, b) have connections with agents who make their money by steering young players to sign contracts with foreign clubs they have connections with, c) both a and b.

This greatly surprises me.
I wouldn’t think so, especially considering the countries that have won it. Maybe it’s a wild statistical anomaly but 96 years of history is something.

If you count in the Women’s World Cups it’s only happened twice… kind of. Jill Ellis was born in England but is an American citizen and spent most of her playing and coaching career in the US.
