MLB 2026: The dying of the light

HUGE day of upsets in the NCAA tourney.

#1 UCLA loses to St Mary’s 3-2. First ever overall #1 to lose their opening game since the format changed in ‘99.
#4 Auburn went down 10-0 early against Milwaukee and ended up losing 13-9.
#9 Southern Miss loses to Little Rock 7-4.
#10 Florida State gives up five runs in the last two innings to lose to St John’s 6-4.

Then there were 3 over 2 wins in the UCLA, USM, and FSU regions, so either a 3 or 4 seed will go into Sunday with a game to spare.

college baseball tournament format for dummies:
Bracket is fixed, no re-seeding.
64 teams divided into 16 four-team regionals. Format is a traditional double-elimination bracket. The #1 seeds are generally the hosts, with rare exceptions.
16 regional winners play in 8 two-team super regionals. Format is a best-of-3 series. The Top 8 national seeds get hosting priority presuming they advanced.
8 super regional winners advance to the CWS in Omaha, divided into 2 four-team double-elimination brackets.
Winners of the 2 brackets advance to the best-of-3 Championship Series.

4 seeds Milwaukee and Little Rock both make it to regional championship with a 2-0 record. There's a chance for a third, but St Johns-NIU has not been played yet due to rain in Tallahassee. In fact, no team in that region has played a second game as Coastal-FSU is suspended in the 6th, so that regional will be pushed back nearly a whole day.

Yankees just scored 13 in the third inning in West Sacramento and left two men on base. One man short of batting around twice.

Anthony Volpe missed a chance for three hits in an inning by one batter.

Down goes #1 UCLA.

After seemingly living off comeback wins the last month, they give up the game late and lose their second of the weekend to St Mary's walkoff 6-5 in the 10th.
