World Soccer XXXI: Golden Generation?

I’m not happy about it but I’m also a realist at times. The Whitecaps have been up for sale for years and there haven’t been any hints of a credible buyer to keep the team there. And to be fair, it’s not like the owner is sandbagging by not spending money on the team. There’s undoubtedly some fuckery going on with the numbers on the losses though.
I assume it's theft, but I am also surprised they would abandon the VAN market. I think of it as one of the very few actually grassroots US soccer places (PNW + Latino diapora) rather than the cynical astroturfing of most MLS markets.

Stadium is the issue. The Province owns the stadium and is far more interested in hosting concerts and trade shows than working with it's sports tenants.

There was an article where the current owner mentioned that multiple groups had signed NDAs to look at the books and then immediately backed out after seeing the books. They definitely are losing money and there seems to be no way to profitability in Vancouver without someone spending a shit ton of money on a new stadium.

Is there a chance in the foreseeable future where MLF payrolls increase as opposed to evermore expansion? The caveat to that is that iirc part of what killed the NASL was spending on aging international players, but expansion also played a part.

I think it’s something that is about to come to the forefront. There’s already rumblings and reports of owners pushing for the ability to spend more on players and wanting significant changes to the salary cap. One of the main reasons cited for the upcoming calendar switch was a better alignment for the transfer market windows.

Edit: In comparison to the old NASL, MLS is on far better foundations. Having nearly every team in their own soccer stadium is a huge difference.

It’s not mentioned very much but NYCFC’s new stadium in Queens that opens next year will be very significant.
