I have a Buchananite friend (he's an honest anti-semite, he hates EVERYBODY from the region) who hasn't voted D since 1992. You will not find a more anti-Dump person. He hates MAGA.

My mom (dedicated Irish Catholic, the last of her generation) was a long-time Pat fan (going back to at least the start of the MacLaughlin Group days) and wanted to vote for him in 2000. Many times, I have considered asking her if she knows of Pat's...*ahem*...colorful statements over the years, but I have decided it's for the best that I remain blissfully unaware.

Being an insurance lawyer in NYC for 25 years means he constantly see immigrants running civil scams and/or criminal conspiracies. He's entirely intellectually cognizant this is wildly unrepresentative sampling. But he's also human and so, little by little, it's turned him into a xenophobe.

If it happened to him it could happen to me or you or anybody else. It's a damn good lesson.

This is sort of the crux of where we are currently...

Stereotyping is a horrible thing. Applying them blindly to anyone that fits the mold is absolutely wrong. But we also have to take a step back and acknowledge that any given stereotype also came into existence because it is/was true, for at least a segment of a given population.

The latter part is the thing that many people just don't want to acknowledge. We can't reflect on where we were and how we have evolved.

My parents voted for Trump twice yet neither have ever exhibited a racist moment in their lives, aren't Jesus freaks, etc., etc. My brother voted for him in 2016 but swore him off completely by around 2018 maybe even earlier. My sister has been brain-washed by her investment-bro husband after never before giving off MAGA vibes. You just never know.

And what has the closed border made better for the average American? Not one fucking thing. 2 People in Minneapolis were brutally murdered because of that policy. Families have been destroyed. Americans have been deported. People live in fear all over the United States. At this point I doubt any "immigrant" calls 911 for any emergency going on in their neighborhood.

I have friends that had to grocery shop and drive kids to school for their neighbors in fear they may be illegally detained and deported.

And all of this happened because the black lady was scary.
