I probably would have become a runner anyway, but I have a clear memory of being at an "Octoberfest' at the family church/school during the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City (I was 11 at the time; I'm old), where they had TVs set up around the grounds. While my mom had 'one more cup of coffee' maybe five times, I stood and watched the men's 10K finals, and I remember marveling that they could just run and run; TV goes out to commercial, comes back, and they're still going and going and going.Watching the 5,000 m speed skating is very therapeutic. If there was a sport where a human becomes a machine, that is it.
I was once on the ice with Kathy Turner, indoor speed skating superstar. Yeah, her thighs were ridiculous. As for speed skating, Eric Heiden from the 1980 Olympics was a 'friend of a friend' here in Madison, from high school, and then around campus at UW. Nice guy, his thighs were amazingly huge. LOL
Penn State freshman Matilde Fantin had Team Italy's first two goals of their upset win over Japan. She's going to be fun to watch at Penn State.Looks like Italy will make it into the quarterfinals. Sweden should beat Japan tomorrow so the outcome of Italy vs. Germany will determine the 2nd and 3rd seeds in Group B.
KDR with the game winner vs Japan. Met her parents at Bright when she was an undergrad. I think they came down from Toronto for every home game. How fun for the host nation. Going to try and find a roster for Italy that says where everyone grew up. Kristin Della Rovere grew up in Canada, Italian by way of paternal grandparents. Her parents are there in Italy jerseys crying at her Olympic dream coming true. Very sweet.
I just saw it, she never really got the elbow onto her. The Swiss player dove, acted like she just got knocked out lol.How would you define Murphy's takedown of the Swiss player in the first period, aggressive or dirty?
Now Murphy did go to the box later in the game and it didn't hurt USA but if she takes penalties in the next game against Canada that could be disastrous.I just saw it, she never really got the elbow onto her. The Swiss player dove, acted like she just got knocked out lol.
Now that one was dumb - She did do an illegal hit - player had passed the puck and Abbey seemed to go out of her way to try to hit her - but did a poor job of that. Made the call look ticky tacky because she did barely hit the opposing player -but so dumb - what was the point of it?Now Murphy did go to the box later in the game and it didn't hurt USA but if she takes penalties in the next game against Canada that could be disastrous.
After Turnbull has taken her penalty, Murphy ran into Desbiens pretty hard, I thought she was going to get penalty - probably should have - and wipe out the US power play. Now that one was dumb - She did do an illegal hit - player had passed the puck and Abbey seemed to go out of her way to try to hit her - but did a poor job of that. It's just the way her brain is wired. My best friend was going to be an Olympian in a different sport and she's hyper aggressive because of the years of training to push yourself to the limit and beyond. Now that one was dumb - She did do an illegal hit - player had passed the puck and Abbey seemed to go out of her way to try to hit her - but did a poor job of that. Canada has been completely embarrassed the last 6 months by the USA.Simms at the center of another controversial goal lol.
Rough one for Canada
They've mixed in a few "younger" players - Watts, Jacques - but even Nurse and Clark eg., while not 'old', are already in their third Olympics. There's gonna be a wholesale change in their roster over the next few years.Does Canada have no young talent? They have no collegians on their roster and the US has seven. This game is a complete whitewash as Canada doesn’t look like they belong on the same rink.

The US Collegians have been big contributors (Harvey, Murphy, Edwards, Dunn, Janecke, Simms). Just very surprising Canada didn't have any collegians they felt were worthy of being on the roster. Certainly doesn't bode well for the near future of the team up north. They've mixed in a few "younger" players - Watts, Jacques - but even Nurse and Clark eg., while not 'old', are already in their third Olympics.
