UNH- How Far West Do We Go?

But you are not losing anything. If Lavins leaves it is to Toronto. None of the rest of this team leaving makes a huge difference.
Absolutely agree. I highlight only as 1) a catalyst for change at the HC position and 2) even deeper embarrassment for the program, athletic department, and school that simply losing games.

Why would a 56 year old woman living comfortably in suburban Detroit, with no coaching history, ever want to uproot herself to take a flyer on her alma mater?

I don't think she's ever coached at a competitive level? Having said that ... if she was interested, it could be an awesome hire for the UNH Women's program.

All due respect, why would she ever be considered for the UNH Men's job - woke quotient? Probably already being better qualified than MS7 would be a super low bar for her to clear. As a PR stunt, it could be awesome ... or maybe a laughing stock? UNH can't afford to take that chance right now. Desperation is not a good look.

There's probably a close to 50% chance Quinn will sign as a UFA with Detroit after next season to add to the equation. If so, other son(s) may follow??

Sounds like she has the perfect mostly-at-home job doing what she's doing right now anyway. I love out of the box thinking, but this dog won't hunt, sorry.
I had a feeling the suggestion of her for MIH coach would make the boomers squirm lol.

Find it funny that she would be an “awesome hire” for the woman’s program but a desperation one for the men. She has worked on staff with a US national team at the Olympics, it shouldn’t matter what her gender is. Read the article and see how Wrobleski describes her contribution to USA hockey and tell me she isn’t qualified to coach any team in college hockey.

Not surprised to see the mere suggestion of a woman coaching men would be categorized as “woke” by you, Chuck, given hiring a black basketball coach is “DEI” by your calulus.

I have a feeling if you’d been around for Jackie Robinson’s integration of baseball you’d be calling that something worse than “woke DEI”.

My husband was a US FIRST mentor for over 20 years at our high school....we have both been to his home for kick off events..he's bummed out about this..
Dean has done a LOT of great things. It appears that a lot of highly successful savant like/borderline on the spectrum males would be better off today if they had worked on their dating skills in high school.

I think UNH is at high risk of a mass exodus this offseason via a variety of avenues (trxfer portal, back to major juniors, quitting, etc) given the second half results. There are few guys on the roster expected to return next season with a strong tie to the program, really only Lavins and Fitzgerald come to mind.

Northern Michigan following the 23/24 season a recent example of this, 13 kids left from their roster after that season.
And now Northern Michigan is 60th on the NPI chart, which may be a foreshadowing of our future.

OK little business school math.... I was pondering this sitting at the Whitt on Friday.

Official attendance for that game was 4594. I don't believe that number for 1 second, that building wasn't even half full, so 3250 MAX.

So lets say UNH is calling tickets SOLD attendance. Example the row in front of me is never full, rarely occupied but always "sold" or at least unavailable for purchase. That 4594 means the Whitt is 70% sold. If you look at most games the lower price bench seats are closer to 75% sold. I don't believe the single game prices of $27 (bench) and $35 (seat with backs) are ever realized so I will use the lower season ticket holder pricing. If single game tickets are going for $10+ on average more than season tickets I am drastically under estimating the revenue hit.

So 1907 tickets to sell... 370 @ $12 and 1537 @ $20 so $35k in revenue not realized... and if that is a typical game it is $598k this year (17 home dates). Now some games, BC, were better attended and many were worse.

This is before you get into lost concessions. If we use the half filled number 3250 and estimate $10 per seat in concessions profit at is another $32k per game another $544k per year.

So the program is down $1.1M.

This is before you start adding:
  • UNH can free up another 440 GA seats that are currently "student seats" but convert for major/sell out games (+$90k in gate, +$75k in concessions - $165k/year)
  • Sponsorships on the boards have dwindled over the years there is lost cash their, more sponsors on the boards, more scarcity more $ per sponsor and that snowballs around the arena... I don't know the price for sponsors
  • I am guessing some of those "sold tickets" are comp'd tickets, and there is probably lost money there as well
  • Season ticket packages have not increased at the rate of inflation, because the team has sucked also cutting into the programs funding
Seem to me the hockey team is short at least $1.5M / year. This is not revenue in my estimate it is bottom line profit.

Start winning games and there is money for paying coaches better for NLI etc.

I can imagine. Some of the stuff coming out about the Epstein files is horrible.

Wondering who from Maine will be in it. Have heard George Mitchell. I know many in the boomer generation loved him.

LOL actually a pretty fair take, Darius. FWIW I don't know the guy, but my experience in general is that highly successful savant like/borderline on the spectrum males have a strong tendency towards naiveté and can easily be targeted (and then exploited) by pond scum like Epstein. Until/unless someone comes up with a lot more than what's out there at present, I'm inclined to take the guy at his word, but fully understand why some due diligence needs to be done before he can be let back into his own organization. To me, it's hard to believe something else wouldn't have come up from his growing organization(s) many years earlier if there was a pattern of such conduct. But stranger things have happened, so we wait to see if there is another shoe to drop, or (hopefully) not.

I read the article. It's called a "puff piece". Wrobleski is obviously appreciative of Ellen's efforts, and specific in attaching those to the US Women's program.

Wrobleski also touted her ability to throw a large steak on the grill on short notice and serve it up in short order. Why didn't you run with that little morsel and tout her as the future head chef at Fleming's, Morton's, Capital Grille or Ruth's Criss, maybe? 😂

Maybe you want to address my post a little more thoroughly for the reasons it's simply not a realistic hiring scenario for UNH?

Are you aware EWH's only bench coaching experience (now age 56) was as a volunteer graduate assistant of the UNH Women's team in the '90's?

Her off-ice assignments have always been on the Women's side of the ledger? She has never been involved in recruiting for a US college program?

She's obviously happy and doing well with the latest in a string of off-ice roles. Yet here you are, turning her into the Jackie Robinson of D-1 Men's Hockey.

Maybe you can discuss how EWH's application/interview process would go for her to be considered a serious candidate in Durham?

"So Coach Hughes ... I understand you were a grad assistant here 30+ years ago, we appreciated your services! Now ... how do you feel about relocating to the NH Seacoast from September thru April, and leading daily practices, with bus travel across the Northeast, infrequent air travel, except of course to take care of your recruiting duties? What will your recruiting strategy be? How will you ensure your athletes' continued compliance with academics? How do you feel about coaching being a year-round job, considering you will be re-recruiting your own players every year? What will you do in the community to raise the profile of your program, and to raise funds with our donor base? What is your NIL philosophy/plan? You know this is not a telecommuting job, correct??"

And I haven't mentioned a single word about what Wroblewski describes as her deep natural attachment to her adult children in their respective NHL primes.

See, I thought your original post was you trolling/baiting all along, especially your conclusion(s). I've called you on it, twice now. Still waiting for a rebuttal ...

I think that it is unlikely that any AD fires an assistant coach unless the head coach makes the request, which in the UNH case I think is also unlikely.
Agreed and totally agreed.

Unfortunately, MS7 had early success this season by achieving double-digit wins, which will be enough to secure his long-term tenure.,
Snives, I refuse to believe a low double figure win total guarantees MS7 anything. Definitely nothing beyond being allowed to finish up his contract.

The new AD basically put her trust in Souza after his 2024 charm offensive. The first two of the three seasons have been an embarrassment (at least so far this season, and there are not too many optimists among us for the '26 stretch run). If she's paying attention, she has to feel like she's been played to some degree.

It doesn't take a coaching genius to recognize a pattern of fast starts and late season collapses reflects a failure to develop his players/teams on the fly.

If AD Rich's long-term ambition is to eventually return to her alma mater as the AD, you'd like to think she'd prefer to have at least a few quality hires she can point to during her time away? Men's Hoops isn't setting the world on fire, and so far isn't surpassing his predecessor's mediocre record. Men's Soccer has been a drastic failure, taking the program out of improbable regular national competitiveness back to mediocrity. The Football coach is going to have his work cut out for him. And of course, extensions to both sides of the Hockey program are not looking particularly impressive either. Not a very impressive CV for an AD.

My kingdom for someone with a clue how to identify qualified coaches capable of running a winning program. Hate to suggest it, because it comes at a price to my alma mater, but maybe that Andy Jones feller might see the UNH job as a higher profile opportunity where he can match wits with his mentor (Bazin)?

This math problem is easily solved by a request to know. Stay tuned.
