UNH- How Far West Do We Go?

I think UNH is at high risk of a mass exodus this offseason via a variety of avenues (trxfer portal, back to major juniors, quitting, etc) given the second half results. There are few guys on the roster expected to return next season with a strong tie to the program, really only Lavins and Fitzgerald come to mind.

Northern Michigan following the 23/24 season a recent example of this, 13 kids left from their roster after that season.

Was it widely known among folks here that the mother of the Hughes brothers was a UNH soccer alum?? Great piece about her in The Athletic for anyone who has a subscription, covers the work she has done with USA Women's hockey.

Wouldn't mind seeing her behind the bench as HC for either UNH hockey program.

Edit: do remember seeing that Luke Hughes' bios have listed a Manchester, NH birthplace
Why would a 56 year old woman living comfortably in suburban Detroit, with no coaching history, ever want to uproot herself to take a flyer on her alma mater?

I don't think she's ever coached at a competitive level? Having said that ... if she was interested, it could be an awesome hire for the UNH Women's program.

All due respect, why would she ever be considered for the UNH Men's job - woke quotient? Probably already being better qualified than MS7 would be a super low bar for her to clear. As a PR stunt, it could be awesome ... or maybe a laughing stock? UNH can't afford to take that chance right now. Desperation is not a good look.

There's probably a close to 50% chance Quinn will sign as a UFA with Detroit after next season to add to the equation. If so, other son(s) may follow??

Sounds like she has the perfect mostly-at-home job doing what she's doing right now anyway. I love out of the box thinking, but this dog won't hunt, sorry.

Agreed. This was pretty much Coach Souza's last bite of the apple, seeing that many others veered away from the Major Juniors route to let others give it a test drive. Unless he pulls off a miracle turnaround in the next month or so, it's only going to make things even more challenging with his new fave fishing hole. :censored:

Agreed, he is the C...if he doesn't transfer or go pro. Word out of Toronto is that Leafs are very high on him.

While I think he has a pro future, he's a marginal NHLer. I see a long career in the SHL, Singapore or the NL, however.

Lavins' success, hustle and attitude is in spite of MS7, not because of it.
Well, he'll definitely have his choice of pro options, seeing that no one holds his draft rights.

When you say the "Leafs are very high on him", I'm tempted to temper your enthusiasm, but I know you have some pretty good contacts in the game. I don't see "very high" for Lavins meaning much more than maybe a bottom six role next year on the Marlies at best if he pops in preseason camp, otherwise he's the 'Coast prototype. And if that's his realistic outlook, spending his senior year of eligibility in Titletown, possibly under a new coach(es?) who could better develop his game where others have let him down, might be just what the doctor ordered for a kid who deserves a break soon, before he gets injured badly and those slim hopes totally evaporate.

norbie, I see our exchange about potty has been expunged from the boards. Must've hurt xir feelings ...

I agree with you that Marty should project to be a bottom six forward in the NHL, a character guy. That's why I think Europe is the more viable career option.

No doubt, UNH would be roadkill if there's a return trip to the Downeast. I got into trouble with Sparkee two years ago when I wrote MS7's pregame speech on here for the MBPBEGAM round "playoffs", and of course, UNH spit the bit (as usual) ... maybe this season, I could take a shot at Ben Barr's pregame pep talk??

As an aside FU17 (!) - I need to come up with something bettah ... Flag? Nah. 17?? Blah ... anyway - kudos, I love questions and topics like this. Not the stupid self-serving clickbait churned out by potty to let him do his usual "I Hate NH"-laced rants. Let me try ...

Someone on here before me - maybe you, or maybe some other sensible sort - suggested the Jimmy T. as interim coach option before I adopted it. So I don't want to poach someone else's credit ... but this would best address the financial challenges we always read about, how the U is so cash-strapped it can't find the princely sum of USD $250,000 (max BTW) to buy Coach out of his final year. With an institution running an annual 8 figure budget, I can't fathom the possibility they can't find that money somewhere between the proverbial couch cushions to get this done ... but just assuming they can't (more likely won't), then sending Souza out on gardening leave for the final season of his contract, and putting Jimmy T. in charge, allowing the two assistants to stick around, and leaving the "program GM" position Tortorella is currently holding vacant for a season seems fiscally prudent, and Jimmy T. can outcoach MS7 in his sleep. If a buyout can be reached - assuming Coach Souza won't do the right thing by his alma mater and voluntarily resign - a buyout of 50% of the amount due lets Souza get on with his life, and funds the differential between Tortorella's GM salary to his interim HC salary for the '26/'27 season.

I can't even imagine MS7 doesn't already have a fire lit under his butt. For once, I can't criticize the road work he apparently put in this offseason, so he has to know he's already on thin ice. Problem remains, he just can't coach at this level. And in Souza's defense, he's had Stewie and Jules with him since the start, I cannot see him as a guy who would jettison a personal friend/dedicated assistant to "save" his job. I think they are probably safe with their contracts - AD Rich wasn't chintzy with MS7's renewal, why would she do anything but the same with his guys?

In the end, I don't see the AD having the stones (figuratively of course) to pull the plug of her own volition. I think our only hope is that Jimmy T. comes to her at or near the end of the season in March, and recommends the glaringly obvious need for a change. Tortorella might even sit down with Souza first and tell him he's better off resigning, because otherwise he's gonna recommend a change? I don't think Tortorella has any designs on the HC job, even as an interim, and stepping into the role as a caretaker is even a little wobbly-looking if AD Rich doesn't hatch the idea first. Hopefully she reads this forum once in awhile, and this might plant the seed for the events that need to happen?

I can't pretend to know the relationships between Jimmy T. and Mike's assistants. It would be hard for either to receive serious consideration to replace MS7, and given their allegiance(s) to Souza, either/both might also step away from UNH if their current boss moves on, however it may happen. Jimmy T. keeping either/both of those guys on during a caretaker season would be a humane step to allow them both to either prove themselves independent of Souza, or to have time to relaunch elsewhere?

There's a lot of meat on that bone, I'm glad you raised it here and now, I suspect there will be lots more discussion of this as this disappointing season winds down ...
FU17 gave me a good chuckle, haha! Whatever works best for you and the rest of the crew is fine by me!

I’m not sure if it was me or someone else, but I think there is some merit to going to Jimmy T on an “interim” role. It is certainly dependent on him having the conversation with the AD/Souza on his thoughts and how the program has fallen etc. The other low hanging fruit I could foresee is giving Stewie a shot. He seems to be leading a lot of the recruiting efforts, so maybe there wouldn’t be a huge exit of players? As they were buying what he was trying to sell. He also predates MS7 a bit (2014 was his first year I believe?) I wonder if he was a bit hurt he got passed over for Souza in the first place, but perhaps the “master plan” for Umile’s replacement was already in the works…

Just spit balling here, but again there would likely be some cost savings with simply “promoting” Stewie, and trying to get MS7 to do a partial buyout or voluntary resignation. Maybe Jimmy T could try and convince him this option could help save his legacy? I imagine a number of younger fans don’t remember/know of his contributions to the team as a player and how he almost got them to the top of the mountain so many years ago… if he continues to drive the program into the ground, it will make it harder to remember the good old days. Even for Umile - while his early years were magnificent, it’s hard to get that “bad taste” of the last few years and his role with the MS7 tenure out of my mouth…

Again, my preference is certainly for what Grouchy was advocating for earlier - fresh blood and new faces. I just find it hard to fathom that would come to fruition before the contract ends (without voluntary resignation). Unless maybe they completely lose out the rest of the way, averaging 1 goal per game and allowing 4-5 goals per game.

And obviously my pipe dream would be that we win out, make it to Boston and win HE. Feel free to give out another 3 year extension if that comes to fruition, I just don’t have a lot of confidence that will come to fruition based on the last 4-5 weeks…

Prove me wrong though ‘cats. Let’s go!
