Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2025-2026

I had read that also that the rink is "NHL sized". I think that was negotiated by NHL as part of agreement to participate. There is a secondary rink but it sounds like it's a temporary setup.
The arena is not done and IT IS the wrong size dimension. It IS NOT nhk regulation size as was written into the agreement. It about 3 feet short and a tad bit narrower.

I had not paid any attention until this morning, but there are reports that it isn't even quite NHL sized. NHL is 200 x 85 feet. The rink in Milan is reportedly "60.0 x 26.0 meters, or approximately 196.85 ft. x 85.3 ft". A statement from December from the IIHF says that was the size used in Beijing in 2022, but other web sites say Beijing was NHL standard 200 feet.

It's a pile of doo doo that they screwed this up. Imagine if all the soccer pitches were not the right size. People would be getting death threats.

An article from ESPN this morning says the head of the IIHF told them "parts of the main hockey rink for the Milan Cortina Olympics might not be fully finished on time, but the playing surface, practice facilities and dressing rooms will be ready when the puck drops for the men's event Feb. 11." The article is mostly about the NHL and their concerns about their players participating. But it does mention that the women's tournament starts on Feb 5th. It does not, however, do anything to 'resolve' the difference between "ready by Feb 11th" and games to be played on Feb 5th.

There has been a little talk about volleyball here which some didn't like, but this is a great interview with Kelly Sheffield on his show. Most of the show he talks about the transfer portal. He's not afraid to speak his mind about it and the outside influence the players get from agents. This has to be the same thing that is happening in most sports now so it has to be happening in hockey as well. It's pretty eye opening.

You can start around the 12 minute mark for the portal conversation.

I watched a portion on Twitter and it's just sickening to see greed and agents poisoning collegiate sports, h. I shudder when I think this it's only a matter of time that this will bleed into women's hockey.

I watched a portion of this on Twitter and it's sickening to hear Kelly talk about how a player was lied to by their agent about confidential payments to other player and the player took it in hook line and sinker, developed a bad attitude, then bailed. Greed and lies will destroy college athletics. I shutter at the thought of this making it's way into women's college hockey. Maybe it won't because whose going to throw life changing money at women's college hockey players? Just imagine though if a rich alum from another top 10 non wcha school offered Dunne, KK and Murphy a mil each to come play for their team? How could they turn that down? You add those 3 players to Penn St or UConn and they are force to be reckoned with.

The really infuriating stuff related to Una Vajagic and her decision to transfer comes around 16:30.

(And let's hope such agent interference and borderline tampering never comes to hockey. But there's a decent chance it will; the more successful the PWHA is, the better the chance it will.)

Thanks for posting here as I wouldn't have seen it otherwise.

Really interesting from start to finish. Looking forward to seeing how the team is made up after the next portal window.

In other news... it's (finally) game day!

Not entirely a surprised with the results from yesterday. UMD got to play last weekend, UW did not. Only got a chance to listen to the end of the first period and the second while driving to the men's game. Sounded like they had a kind of a flat first period and they weren't taking tremendous care of the puck in the second period. I wish in the shootouts we wouldn't try these fancy stick handling deals and just get to the middle of a slot and pick a corner or go five hole and let it rip like the UMD player did. I will say it's a pretty crazy world that I can watch a shootout of a hockey game while I'm eating a rocky rococo's lol.

Only four shots on goal in a tie game in the third period? That is ridiculous! They were getting less and less shots as the game wore on.....17 12 4. Perhaps conditioning was an issue. They did dominate the overtime, but that's really not hockey. Hall got destroyed in the face off circle. Pretty strange that the fourth line center took 17 face-offs and the third line center took 5. To me that reads that the fourth line was getting a lot more playing time than the third line was. Or did they just flip Scannell and Picard? At any rate, after looking at the stats, it was a troubling game more than I thought. Today's game is going to have to be a must watch, not that it wasn't before....

Looked disjointed and were unable to solve the UMD defensive shell. Too many shots from the perimeter.

Gonna need to get to the dirty areas and get the goalie moving side to side.

Really loose in the neutral zone and gave up way too many odd-man rushes.

I'm expecting that they'll get it cleaned up for today.

UMD is a team I don't want to see in the NCAAs. Bad matchup seemingly and that goalie could steal a game.

The past number of years, local Madison TV has picked up the "My9" TV broadcast of games from Duluth, but for some reason that didn't happen yesterday.

But it is today. The game today will be on "MeTV" in Madison: 15.4 over the air, channel 192 on Spectrum cable, DirecTV 77, etc etc.
