UMaine 25-26: Marques My Word: Back to the Big Time

Have they started the new bball arena and where is it?
They are breaking ground for Morse Arena this winter.....actually I've heard that it will happen after the Nov.1 football game. It will be located in the South Endzone area and the parking lot behind it. That lot on the left hand side driving toward the field house will no longer exist. The budget will be in the $80-$90 million range. Only 2,500ish seats.....a bit on the small side for the amount they are spending IMO.

Parking already is an issue.....this will exacerbate that problem. Whenever a new parking structure is mentioned....people chime in that Marsh Island is sinking and it is impossible to build on campus despite all of these new buildings being constructed. It is 2025 and UMaine has an incredible engineering school.....I'm sure they can figure out how to build a 3 level parking structure.....lol.

Parking already is an issue.....this will exasperate that problem. Boston is built on filled in land, at least in places. Lots of big buildings there :)

On a side note.....the Alfond Foundation has donated another $6 million to the M & W hockey programs. Not sure on the specifics (ops? equipment? NIL? all of the above?). Just incredible generosity being demonstrated over these last few years.

Probably to cover the opt in and NIL. Great to hear.

Alfond made billions on Maines workforce, glad he is giving some back

Maine football is awful, yeah they won but they tried to give away another in the 4th.

But his family is doing the right thing now for sure. The arena is amazing. I think they redid the visitors lockers too. Rumor has it..that its designed in memory of the University of No Hardware.

I was wondering about the visitor locker room(s). Hadnt read anything about that.
I thought once I heard the old locker room was getting converted for visitors but now I read its becoming an equipment room.
Id be tempted to have left them as is and in memory of parker. If you've ever used them youd appreciate what a home advantage that old setup was.
But I suppose to tempt higher end out of conference teams to come to the alfond something better is needed.

I'm all for not rolling out the red carpet for opponents but there is a happy medium behind being a dusty ol broom closet and the lavish new setup the mens/womens teams have now.

I think you also don't want it so bad that players start to think "if this room is this terrible I wonder how bad the rest of the place is" especially in an era where players can transfer very freely.

Larry weighs in, pun intended :)

Bradly leads hurricanes in goals so far this preseason

I think this season will be Barrs toughest since arriving here. Lost a ton of talent, guys who play both ends of the ice, guys who have been here and used to Barrs system. Replaced with possibly more talent but all newcomers to Orono. Lots of expectations, new arena, tickets sold out already, tough schedule. I'm not doubting he will put it together but I think patience early might be in order . Should be fun. I'm thinking of getting Frozen Four tickets :D

Barr mentioned on Saturday that it should be okay to get in and watch practices now. Not sure which entrance will be open to do so, but I'm going to try on Wed afternoon.
Im going to try to stop by tomorrow, in orono anyway.
Ill try the back door by tke first.
Its been used to access to the ice for a while now, maybe still is unless the front door area is 100% done now.

Agreed. Brutal January stretch will test them. I did add my name to the frozen four presale list.

The Larry article reads as Barr’s best sandbagging attempt. Sort of hard to say you have no idea what to expect when your team is picked 4th in hockey east(by coaches) and 8th in the country in the National poll.

On the positive side I expect more speed, more fluid nuetral zone transition, better power play, and more depth across the board. One the negative side I expect less heavy grinding offensive zone cycling, slightly worse penalty killing, worse defense in our own end specifically with teams that are heavy like BU and Providence. My guess is Josh Nadeau has a bit of a break out year where he works well with Poirier and Max Scott. Could see Josh being an all hockey east type.

See if you can identify any surprises at center. I’d guess centers would be M. Scott, Russell, Lipinski, Komarov, and James. But I do think Marques could wind up playing center eventually.
