UMaine 25-26: Marques My Word: Back to the Big Time

I just had this pop up as suggested content on YouTube. I was happy to see it was Pat Shea and some new tv show about life of a college hockey player. It’s pretty funny. https://youtu.be/k0nmN_7BGMA?si=ruX2HRYnkZcZPf5v
Per your recommendation sparkee i checked out a few of these. Lol.
Theres probably a touch of comic reality to this. Shea must have been a piece of work in the locker room.

Maine football is awful. The O coordinator is either hampered by the personnel or truly sucks. Maine D holding their own and then the punt returner muffs it and it's about to be 38-17. Steven's should be packing.

Edit - now 38-17 instant pass td

The Black Hole is the 0 in 0-4. It's also where the school is throwing piles of cash. At least if they lit it on fire we could get some heat.

Does anyone else think that letting pro (echl and ahl) hockey players now play in college is way over the edge of the intended sport?
Whats next, getting rid of the four year eligibilty.

I've got conflicting thoughts on this. One one hand, those that signed almost certainly would have played NCAA instead of ECHL if the opportunity was available to them and a ton of NCAA players are going to make significantly more than ECHL players this season.

However, I still lean toward signing a Pro contract terminating college eligibility. With that being said, maybe Barr still has Duda's phone number ;)

I don’t know this as a fact, but I think their eligibility hinders on whether they just made enough to cover expenses vs. making enough to accumulate sizable bank accounts. If a kid came from CHL, was never eligible, had to go ECHL and made peanuts… I say let them have a shot at NCAA if they want. I don’t see guys that have made a lot of money even wanting to go to NCAA. They would just continue making money without needing the extra hassle of going to classes. So I’m ok with it and I don’t think it is going to make a big impact on college hockey.

If what you say is the criteria, not making much money, thats awful subjective and makes things even more uncertain. Throwing more worms in the can.

I can see some reasoning, if I squint real hard, that bringing a player who was on an amatuer tryout agreement to or back to the ncaa fits in with whats happening. I dont know enough about the 3 or 4 (or whatever how many now) cases of echl/ahl players coming to d1 if this was why they were approved.

According to Mike Mcmahon's newsletter the NCAA has a formula they don't share with anyone that calculates what reasonable living and training expenses are based upon the market. Each year at 21 or above playing organized hockey counts as a year of NCAA eligibility so guys can't retire from the ECHL at 26 and go back to college. There's 4 people this year who played a year of ECHL hockey, next year there will likely be even less. They're sitting out games this year and have lost the appropriate years of eligibility. This is just a tiny adjustment period with the CHL rule change and isn't going to be a huge trend in the future.
