The problem would be Liberals. The Left would show up. They always do when there's a non-conservative-mini-me on the ballot. But Liberals prioritize their comfort and convenience over, ya know, other people's lives and freedoms. That's why Democratic candidates have been safe (and mostly lame) since the 70s: they can always depend on us, but they can't depend on the Center-Left from sulking and even switching to feather their own nest (c.f. Nixon/McGovern, Reagan/Mondale).
Plus, can you imagine what the MSM would do to a true Left nominee? The people who own and run those networks have no intertest in genuine tax reform. The NYT, CNN, and Politico would run thirty stories a day about the horrors of The Terror. Every editorial would begin, "We wholeheartedly support social justice, but we must be practical!"
Liberals steadfastly embrace democratic action and the furthering of equality right up until the point where it actually would cost them the least personal inconvenience. Then they bail. "Utopian" means "Wait, there is a cost to ME? No way!"
