University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

Maine is now 80% to be a 1 seed. The only way Maine is not a one seed is a loss to UConn and Western Michigan winning the NCHC.

The worst case scenario is Maine losing tomorrow night and North Dakota winning the NCHC. Maine would be the #1 seed in Fargo and have to play the host in the first round.

The Quinnipiac-Cornell game in the ECAC tomorrow afternoon could also be important because a loss to UConn and Western Michigan winning the NCHC drops Maine to 6 overall. Hopefully the Bobcats take care of business and Maine is guaranteed a top 5 finish before taking the ice tomorrow night.

Western Michigan also plays the late game despite being the #1 seed in the NCHC because they are playing NoDak...

They did say on TV all OT goals are automatic replay, not sure if NU actually challeneged or the refs were just goin thru the procedures

It was a Northeastern challenge for a major penalty that they say occurred before Maine scored. I didn’t see anything looking like a major. The officials were not finding much as they seemed to struggle to find the play the NU coach was referring to. I could see the screen when they were reviewing. Nice try by NU coach as he has nothing to lose I guess.

The Renwick game winner was off the ice and looked like it went off his right glove. He was positioned like a wall and just waiting to let it deflect off him.

If you slow you playback speed to x0.25 you can see it go off his glove here at the end of the highlight video:

Fun nailbiter for sure. NU showed a lot, tough team to play against. Hoping the boyz can recover quickly enough to have the energy for tonight, they will need it. UConn playing very good hockey right now....a tough out. Booyahh needs to be the man tonight.

they say hard to beat a team 3 times in one season ..we will see..GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the rules gods do only one thing in the offseason, it has to be getting rid of this.

Back to the game. My team lost; the better team won. So, all the best to Maine and all of the HEA entries in The Show.
It was a hell of a battle. Right up there with best memories for a Maine fan. The battling chants of the student sections were great.

Whitehead was outstanding. NU defense was as well. I can’t recall a game where the other team had 42 blocked shots. Maine attempted 137 shot in that game, only 60 on net.

Doesn't come as a surprise, but I thought Breen was one of the best players on the ice last night. I could probably count on both hands the amount of times he had the puck along the boards in the o-zone and had NU defensemen all turned around. His ability to retain the puck on the glass and win battles is pretty remarkable given his size. I hope he gets another big one in this playoff run. For me, he's right up there for my lifetime favorites with Damon, Leveille, Flynn, and Fossier.

Separately, Nobes has quietly (until last night) become a horse on the back-end. He's playing with a ton of confidence and he broke up a couple high-danger chances last night and then set up an incredible chance for Freel in the third. It bodes very well for this team when all six D are firing. Losses this year have generally occurred when only 4 or 5 are going. Taking the NE regional up from NYC tonight, can't wait!

Too bad Freel missed a wide open net late in the third.Beautiful pass by nobes. NU was way better than there 9th place finish. Whitehead was a stud. Not sure how that puck made all the way to renwick. Amazing. NU was packed in tight in OT, little rope a dope? Didn't work but. Great save early in ot by Boija.

Now the question is , is the uconn goalie as hurt as it looked last night? I thought they played two goalies in Orono?? so maybe it doesn't matter. Going to be tough game although BU looked like they didn't care. Flat footed and barely touched anyone.

Win or lose the transition from doormats to a hard playing successful team is a credit to the players, staff and most importantly Coach Barr.

Yes, Nobes was great for the most part. He had a ton of shots on goal and clanked the iron once, I thought that was going in. Antonacci was great two, very mobile with the puck and helped the transition game. Chipped in on offense and was rewarded with a goal. He just threw that on net and it was going wide but hit a NU defensemen and went in. That was a shocker to see that go in after all the other great chances they had. Was great to see Maine get a puck luck bounce for once. I will be there tonight too, wouldn’t miss it for the world. Might be tough if the team can’t recover enough energy-wise… but I’ll be cheering them on to beat hell. Lost my voice last night, I’m getting too old to be trying to keep up with the student section for 5 periods of hockey. Lol

Really interested to see the Uconn goalie, they definitely ran two against us. It was odd to see him stay in the game after looking pretty hurt in the third.

He actually missed it to the far side which was strange. Needed to chip it up on center and it goes.

As for the UConn goalie, he definitely looked like he was not feeling good just standing. I’m not sure what he did, but it was on a diving play to make a miracle kind of flopping effort. After that he was visibly not in a normal posture. They have a 1b though, Muzelik, which was UNH’s back up last year that is playing better for UConn. Need to shut down that Muldowny Tattle line. They are small fast feisty and skilled. They’ve got a moose on defense, big guy that is very good at battling/clearing the net front.

UConn has been running a tandem in goal all season AFAIK, so I would have expected Muzeliek (sp?) tonight regardless of Tung getting shaken up. Also agree on Nobes, I could see the confidence in his game last night and just overall recently for sure. I also almost passed out at one point in overtime when Chabrier almost gave the game away in his own end, kept dancing around with an NU guy all over him and ended up turning it over for a shot on Boija. But aside from that play I didn't notice him much, good or bad.

Lots bleary eyed maine fans in the hotel here, getting up late (me too).
What a game.
Going to be up in cheap seats tonight, all I could get last minute. Stayed up until 2 hoping NU and BU fans would be selling their seats.
How great it is to again walk out of a big game with a win.
Love it that no boston team with all their allstars is in the final.

As to the puck off renwicks hand, you rule experts correct me if wrong, the puck can deflect off any body part as long as theres no intention to redirect the puck.

The fishing challenge at the end by NU is bs that they allow that.

Freestyling the numbers a little but I think its 7 times since Feb 1 Maine has scored a game tying goal in the third period and/or won in OT

Trailing in the third is frustrating but these guys have brass ones and no quit. What a culture and identity Ben Barr has built
I watched Coach Barr’s post-game interview last night. He mentioned he could see the positive way the team responded after NU’s third goal.

UConn no doubt try to take advantage of Maine' s late game. Like I said I think their best hope for tonight is for Booyaah to stand on his head and give them a fighting chance. You never know in this game though, maybe Barr and staff will have a strategy for slowing them down. Maine does have last change fwiw. Both teams have a lot to play for. Should be a good one.

Yes, as long as not intent. I actually think Renwick was being a backstop and had hit stick ready to pull the trigger if the puck dropped in front of him, but didn’t need that! Retribution for him whiffing on that loose puck in front of open net on a rebound where Whitehead was down and could only swipe a blocker. But if Renwick makes contact there it was a goal. Nice to see him get redemption!
