UMaine Hockey 23 - 24: The Barr Crawl to Glory!!!

Who calls Orono "Downeast Maine"?

Orono is located in the Downeast region of Maine. Just as Durham is located in the Seacoast region of NH.

If you're from Maine, then "the Downeast" suffices. And if you're from NH, then "the Seacoast" is fine.

If you're "from away" (guilty), then maybe you provide a little extra context.

I've certainly called Orono far worse in the past. You feel more comfortable with "Greater Bangor"?

One big difference between your main(e) man Ms7 and Coach Barr, one has a contract extension signed and one doesn't. One is playing for there coaching life and one isn't. We shall see which team is ready to go for 60 minutes.

Couldn't agree more, Wally. It'll be inexcusable if UNH were to come out and do a Umile-like gack-fest. We'll see ...

Obviously we all know Chuckles is full of hot air, but I have not agreed with him this entire time that Maine and Barr have no pressure on them. Less than New Hampshire and Souza, perhaps, but if Barr and Co lose this game, they will now be 0-3 in the playoffs, with two of those losses at home as a big favorite. I'm sure that's a narrative he won't want to start developing.

I think Maine is going to win a hard-fought game anyway, but still.

There's pressure on both teams...for UNH to continue there season...for Maine to show the mid-season slump is in the rear view mirror...goaltending will be key for both teams as is the usual in all contests in the playoffs...it's the team that stays out of the box on Saturday that will have the advantage imo.

This is going to be a great game no matter what. UNH fans are confident, Maine fans are confident, and I bet the boys have this game circled after the ass whooping they took in Durham. They will be ready, get the first goal and ride the momentum.

I’d like to see Barr start working the refs from the opening faceoff. If anyone even breathes on Josh, he should start in. It will get a call or two…

Do we expect the officials to call the came tight since it's a "border battle"?

Hard to say...they may let them play it out for half the period and then collar the play some...not to let the emotion get out of hand...myself I hope they just call it right in that...a penalty is a penalty ...1st period or with 8 minutes left in the 3rd period....but who knows....

I want to be careful to respond only for me, groovy, but I'm not in any ways "confident". What I do think is that UNH has a puncher's chance, which is something they rarely had in the Umile Era. Lots of very talented teams back then who could skate like the wind, but more often than not, way too soft. And guys like Walshy and Whitehead knew that, had tougher teams that were equally as talented (if not more so), and that physical edge made all the difference. I don't ever think I saw a UNH team get the better of the physical play (putting aside a lot of meaningless years during the Gendron era, where both programs were dog food) until the two games in Durham last month.

Can UNH bring it like that in Orono? If so, will Barr be able to adjust? All fascinating things, and we'll have answers in just over 24 hours. And if UMaine wins, I hope you guys win HEA and go deep into the NCAA's. No BS, happy to explain, but don't want to be the long-winded gasbag wearing out my welcome ... :-)

Chuck I do agree they have a chance. The most fascinating thing for me is, does MS7 get fired on the spot if UNH gets their doors blown off tomorrow?

I think the first 10 minutes is going to show you what type of emotion this game will bring. Playoffs, rivalry, we will see pretty quickly what is called..who are the refs does anyone know? I swear it's been freaking Roulliard most of the season and he is hot and cold on his calls.

No.
Dont tell someone who is from downeast that, you'll find out.
The tourism folks consider it the highlands.

Downeast is East of Penobscot bay, some will say it starts in Ellsworth, Some will say Bucksport is the gateway to downeast Maine. Orono is central Maine, as is Bangor. I've worked all over Downeast Maine, if you know what Deer Isle Nikes are?, you know where Downeast is : )

Yep, sure know where downeast is also.
The downeast area eventual fate of gentrification with summer folks has sure accelerated.
Not much hockey going on over there though.

Gotta get in the Delorean for that

"You know that line you aren't supposed to cross when talking to the president?"
'I'm coming up to it now?'
"No, no. Look behind you."

It's great that the shuttle will drop people off in front of the gym for a game at Alfond Arena...very convenient.
