NCAA Tournament Selection and Seeding

This may be true but I am also giggling at the Minnesota men’s hockey history lessons splashed all over this page. Woog, Lucia.... the GOAT Herb Brooks. I accidentally clicked on a thread in the men’s forum yesterday and even found some women’s hockey talk over there. Worlds collide. Love the passion.

Each of those LEGENDS have holes in their resumes, no one is perfect. Brooks won 3 titles, but only made the playoffs 4 of his 7 years. Lucia did almost too good, too fast, caught the NHL's attention and struggled to adjust to the new era of college hockey where blue bloods need a lot more luck now to win consistently, and Woog simply was never able to win the big one!

Crazy thing is now, I saw someone calling for the firing of Frost, lol. Guy is arguably the most successful Gopher sports coach in history since Bierman, has one sort of a off season(a covid affected season, btw), meaning is only ranked #4 by the Massey Ratings instead Top 3 like they are almost every other year, in part because circumstances found them playing over 50% of their games vs Top 3 ranked teams, but this means he should be fired? WTF???

I knew I could get the pot stirred up. What sound does a hockey player make when they are choking on a puck?
WOOOOOOOOOOGGGGGGGGGGG!

I couldn't care less if UMD and the WCHA conspired to figure out a way to manipulate things so that UMD won the Regular Season Conf title or not!!! How is that significant?

You asked how he figured Duluth had almost won the WCHA. I explained it to you.

Whether you like the explanation or not is of no concern to me. Duluth almost won the WCHA regular season, as per the criteria set up by the WCHA. This is not a matter of debate; this is a fact.

The rest is just noise and fury. Not interested. Troll somebody else. Or better yet, somewhere else.

My point was simple, winning the regular season title, sorry, I meant, ALMOST won the regular season title, is MEANINGLESS when they needed to play nothing but creampuffs to accomplish it.

And you needed a bunch of Ifs ands and butts for it to have happened, and of course, only ifs ands and butts that favored UMD and no one else. Go figure?!

It's simple, UMn was better than UMD this season, AND more deserving of the NCAA tourney invite, and 90-99% of serious college hockey fans agree about this. But then there has to always be the exceptions, the ignorant/uninformed, the horribly biased, the HATERS and the trolls.

So... are you propping up 1992 as indicative of Woog's history at UMn? LOL Only a total loser or a very ill informed moron, or maybe a UMD or SCSU fan who is just hating on the Gophers would do that.
Sorry my friend. I went to the U of M. I lived at the U of M. I got comp tickets to Mariucci occasionally. When I would attend tournaments I would applaud every goal, regardless of the team. My seat mates once asked me who I was rooting for. I replied "the best team". I was always happy with the result. The best team won.
Hockey is the winner when both teams put out 110%.

I don’t think he should be fired but I’ve always thought of Frost as being a bit overrated. I’ve just had this feeling his teams should be more consistent and dominant than they typically are given the level of talent he gets year after year. I don’t think he’s done any better with his rosters over the years than many less heralded coaches could have done with the same talent.

I don't care about "your point". You asked a question. I answered it.

Well, I guess your simple minded cave man like mind doesn't understand the concept that not all questions are asked for the intention of seeking an answer. Some are merely asked to prove a point, some are asked out of sarcasm, etc.. And of course you don't care about my point as it's pretty obvious you are just being argumentative merely for the sake of being argumentative. So YOU are the one being a troll.

Or would you argue that Wichita St was more deserving of an NCAA Men's BB tourney bid than Houston was this season? I remember back when the PAC Reg Season Champ didn't even make the NCAA tourney and our lowly Gopher team, who couldn't crack the top half of the conf and only got into the NIT went on to beat the PAC Regular Season Champs on their way to winning the NIT Title. I also remember when the defending Women's College hockey Natl Championship team of 2001 won their regular season Conf Title and did not make it into the NCAA tourney. Is 3 examples not enough to prove my point to you? It's OBVIOUS the NCAA Selection Committees do not hold up Regular Season Conf Titles in as high of a regard as you seem to, much less teams who "almost" won Reg Ssn Conf Titles.

Dude, you basically LIED about Woog and I called you on it. Simple as that. Prove me wrong or admit that you are either a liar or an ignoramous.

One observation I have about Minnesota is just how Minnesota heavy their roster is. Clearly they are one of the very best teams in the country but there’s been some great talent born outside of Minnesota, and when it comes to winning championships that is going to play a factor.

Some of the most special players of the last few years are Pankowski, Roque, Giguere, Gabel, Mueller, Frankel, Dunne. I’d have to check on Frankel but I don’t think any of the rest are Minnesotan. To the Minnesota hustle issue, yes I’ve observed that.

I was thinking about Florence Schelling and Kendall Coyne and what great dividends they have paid for NU. NU is probably not too tough a sell for a recruiter, but still that was a great job that undoubtedly lead to more great recruits. We’ll see if they can win it all here this week.

I suppose you believe Nick Saban is overrated as well, eh? I mean, how in the hell has he only won 3 Titles in the last 8 years when he almost always has the top recruits coming in?

I'm sorry, but making 5 straight Championship games and winning 4 of those 5 games, is a very high accomplishment worthy of the utmost respect. Since that run, he's also had a 3rd place finish & a Runner Up in his next 3 seasons, followed by being ranked #2 going into last year's tourney that got canceled. This year, they are arguably the 3rd best team in the nation and have shown they are capable of beating the 2 teams in the conf above them as they outscored OSU in their 6 meetings, and got a tie and a 1 goal loss in their last series vs Wisconsin, hardly an example of being out of their league and totally unable to beat the Badgers. Northeastern hasn't proven that they are better than UMn, much less OSU or Wisconsin, or UMD for that matter, all that Northeastern has proven is that they are better than the other teams in their conf, a conference that hasn't produced a Natl Champion even once in the 21st Century and only 3 times even got to the Title game and have only 11 Frozen Four appearances in over 20 years, so no more than 1 FF appearance every other year, but all of a sudden we're supposed to assume that Conference's champ is the best team in the country? Not buying it. Personally I wouldn't rank Northeastern higher than 4th.

Sorry to say this, but outside of Clarkson, no eastern team has proven that they can beat the best of the WCHA for the entire 21st Century.

As for this season, my prediction is the winner of UW vs OSU, who will both easily win their first round matches, going up against UMD for the title as I'm guessing even the 4th best WCHA team this season is better than any other team outside of the WCHA in the nation, in part because most of the ECAC didn't even compete this year.

Minnesota has NEVER been shy about looking outside of Minnesota for players. Amanda Kessel, for one, was from Wisconsin, and Noora Raaty was from Finland. Thing is, most non-Minnesotans assume most of the team is from Minnesota, and hence, need to be comfortable with that. Amanda obviously was, and a couple Finlanders were. It's kind of a 2 sided coin, we gain the benefit of having the upper hand when it comes to recruiting Minnesota players, but also have a sort of disadvantage when it comes to recruiting non-Minnesotans.

Sorry if this has already been discussed or posted somewhere - but does anyone know if the games starting tomorrow with be on TV or streaming anywhere? Haven't seen anything about coverage. Thanks!

You clearly bleed maroon and gold which is fine. Let me put it this way, if I was starting a program from scratch I would take the likes of Mark Johnson, Muzz and Kampersal well ahead of Frost. And I’d trust Saban to come to, for example, the Gophers and turn the program around. I do not believe Frost would have a similar impact if he were suddenly coaching Mankato.

The question about Kampersal is that his teams, going back to his many years at Princeton, tend to underachieve in the postseason. Is that just bad luck, is his talent pool thin and his team's wear down, or what is the issue? I don't know, but until he wins a few tournaments, I'm not confident saying that his coaching resume is superior to that of Frost.

I do agree that there are coaches who are tasked with trying to win without a lot of talent. Some seem to basically concede that they're going to struggle during the regular season with the intent of peaking for the playoffs; Chris MacKenzie at UConn would be an example of this. I'm not sure how one fairly compares the coaches who have to try to win with little talent with those who acquire talent and win with it. Part of a college coaches job is to figure out how to get players in the door who will win games, so that component can't be ignored, but some have huge recruiting advantages over others.

Minnesota went what 4-8-1 against a weak WCHA top 4? The only reason this is even a conversation is because of the bizarre choice of teams that were put in ahead of them. If PSU and SLU make it, non story.
