NHL 2021: I Pledge Allegiance to Gritty

Was listening to WEEI on the way home and the host who was tearing into the Bruins and Miller got arrested for drink driving a few years ago when he was in his mid to late 30’s. Perhaps not a surprise a talk radio host would have a compete lack of humility. What Miller did was awful but not sure he deserves some sort of lifetime ban from the NHL and the holier than thou stuff is truly sickening.

Six years for an apology that he put on instagram? Fuck that piece of shit and fuck the bruins to the moon and back

Fk them is right. I saw this earlier:
Miller also said in his statement that he apologized. Meyer-Crothers disputes that, saying Miller only contacted her son last week on Instagram and there was no apology.

I hope ever time this pos steps on the ice he gets his clock cleaned.

"He's not coming into the NHL. He's not eligible, at this point, to come into the NHL. I can't tell you that he'll ever be eligible to come into the NHL." Full comments from NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman on the #NHLBruins signing Mitchell Miller.

Smooth move, Bruins.

So, a few thoughts.
  • Why wouldn't he be eligible? Not defending him (quite the contrary), but other than "fuck this guy I don't want him on my team" why wouldn't he be allowed to play, while other notable - and sometimes convicted - scumbags play?
  • Two Bruins players (including captain Patrice Bergeron) were quite negative to the news. Surprisingly honest. I had assumed the most we'd get out of them would be milquetoast say-nothing pablum but nope. Honesty and strong dislike.
  • The Bruins customer service department has been overwhelmed with calls and emails from fans criticizing this move (I like that!).
  • The Bruins have handled this about as poorly as they possibly could have. The mealy-mouthed comments from Sweeney. Making players stand out front of this, instead of Neely and Sweeney doing it. Just a complete and total clusterfuck.
Neely and Sweeney need to be fired over this. I've been down on them for years and this isn't just the straw that broke the camel's back, it's a boulder.

I'm sure there's some sort of morals clause that the league can use to bar a guy who would create problems. The kind of thing they would have used to keep out an openly gay player in the 1950s. There would be a court case about it and the league would probably lose, particularly because the Bruins would support the player. The league office here is just trying to make things that much worse for the Bruins' management, but the people with power are Bruins fans. Boycotting games and costing the Bruins money would end this immediately.

But, we are talking about the good people of Boston. For them this is a feature, not a bug.

I’m curious as to why? The Bruins are currently 10-1, I think the best record in the NHL. They’re still missing one of their best players. What is the need to bring him on? Do they have a hole to fill that hasn’t been made public? Such a beyond stupid move that will most likely change things on the team. The fact that even Bettina is saying no says a lot.

He isn't even NHL-ready yet, so he wouldn't even be on the big club. Just an insane and inexplicable move.

They’ve struggled drafting in recent times and this was a chance to make up for it a bit. With the salary cap you need some guys on the roster who are cheap and he would have served that purpose. I don’t think they were/are planning on him playing for the Bruins this year but he could have helped down the road.

There is a kid in a similar situation who the canadiens drafted and signed and it seems like that has kind of blown over. The Bruins might be counting on the same thing happening.
