I'll be honest, that doesn't strike me as it's being described like a Reagan moment or that he just forgot. It looked more like he was listening to something, acknowledged someone on the video call (you can see them on the screen in one cut), and gave an answer or update. I wouldn't be surprised if he had an earpiece in to be able to hear those on the call. Doesn't seem off to me.

I thought it was a live speech to his country. If so, it would still be odd. If not, you could be right. I did consider that until I heard it was live, but that's assuming that information was correct.

Yikes.

I'm barely an amateur historian, but my understanding is that what saved the world during the Cold War was MAD, and the knowledge that all parties were rational actors and very much wanted to be alive.

Can we say the same for Putin right now?

Many years ago, I read an interesting article by Khrushchev's son, who at the time was teaching at a college in Rhode Island, who was in the "room" during the Cuban missile crisis. Other than it provided a fascinating perspective from the Soviet side, one of the points that stuck out was indeed the MAD principle. The Soviet leaders in the end were rationale leaders and knew full well the implication of nuclear war. In fact, at one point, Castro told Khrushchev to bomb Miami (just one he said) to prove a point. Khrushchev went off on Castro about how crazy he was and having no understanding what that really meant and the horrible destruction it would cause.

Inspiration.

He's calling the West's bluff here in regards to using nukes as an offensive measure.

Exactly. This is the opposite of MAD. It's "I can do anything I want because I can end the world."

Gotta admit, I assumed the first to try this would be a theocracy. But it's always been a possibility.

I'm reading a Formula 1 message board, and someone mentioned that a European TV station stated that Putin is addicted to steroids. That would also explain a lot.

Mariupol asks for help.

The Ukrainian city of Mariupol has no water, heat or electricity and is running out of food, its mayor said, as forces battling a Russian onslaught warned they needed reinforcements to help avoid losing control of the strategic port city.

Mayor Vadym Boychenko on Friday appealed for military assistance and for a humanitarian corridor to be created to evacuate some of the city’s 400,000 residents after five days of bombardment by encircling Russian troops.

“We are simply being destroyed,” he said in a televised appeal, describing indiscriminate shelling of residential areas and hospitals.

“They want to wipe Mariupol and Mariupol residents off the face of the earth,” he said in a shaky video feed that cut in and out.

...

Ukrainian troops are holding the line against the attempted Russian advance on Mariupol, but need significant backup, said a deputy commander of the Azov military unit, part of Ukraine’s National Guard.

“This is the last city that prevents the creation of a land corridor from Russia to Crimea,” he said in a post on Azov’s official Telegram page, identifying himself by his call sign Kalyna. “Mariupol cannot be lost.”
