Moldova has applied for EU membership.

This is also important because they have their own Russian-led secession movement in Trans-Dniester and if they were an EU member that might allow the West to help them resolve it.

I think we are seeing the incorporation of the eastern fringe into the western core of Europe.

Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania are now being referred to as the "Front Line States." I cannot recall a time in world history in which those nations were given a European identity.

I'm starting to think Macrons people were right...Putin might be losing his grip on reality. I'm not sure anything short of him being suicided will be enough. I hope I'm wrong.

Did anyone see the CNN video of Putin giving a live address to his people?

At one point, it appears the speech is over. So, Putin stands up as if he is done, and just stands there. Then he buttons his jacket and just stands there some more, almost looking confused as if his brain "froze." He then unbuttons his jacket, sits back down, and after a second or two, finishes what was now obviously the conclusive portion of his speech. In fact, that wrap up was pretty important from his perspective on the message he was trying to get across to his country, yet it appeared he completely "forgot" about it.

It was all bizarre. Yeah, I definitely think Macron is correct. Putin is not all there anymore.

Then that is different...and also why I said if ;^)

I don't want us to ever act rashly, but since we (as in you and me) are observers all we can do is comment on what we know in the moment and reassess as things go forward.

Thankfully for all of us the people in charge know more than we do :^p

Agreed on all counts.

I didn't see that. That does not give me confidence, it's something Dump or Late Stage Reagan would do.

I have not watched any of the swill on MSNBC, CNN or the Feeble Three, let alone Moron TV, but one thing I find heartening from France24 and DW and even WION and Beeb is there's no "give both sides" false equivalency bs. They don't have Tucker Carlsev or Sean Hannitsky repeating Putin's Big Lies in order to "just ask the question."

This is healthy and shows an actual commitment to truth.

That is actually a bit scary given that he seems to be able to put forth the demeanor he has been putting forward... And knowing he's surrounded by Yes Men who won't dare cross Fearless Leader...

Considering Moldova might be next that is...interesting.

Saw a story on France24 on women giving birth in the basements of hospitals.

1. Exhibit 23,763,802,410 that either there is no God or He's a sadist.

2. I really hope Putin suffers before he goes.

Texas and Florida taking notes

"Russian President Vladimir Putin said he discussed Belarus’ interest in having access to the Baltic Sea in a phone call with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko.

“Just today we talked with the President of Belarus on this matter. Our Belarusian friends are interested in being present in the Baltic, interested in developing their own port facilities. You know that I also support it,” Putin said"

Now, I'll give you all a moment to think about your geography, and then time to open up Google Maps.

If you all could point to where on the Baltic Sea Belarus would be able to build a port... why did you chose Lithuania?

That might answer the question of what Putin planned for Ukraine after they knock out the existing government.

I agree with your other post, Kep. I have not been watching much of the swill either. But this headline caught my eye, so I checked it out.

Yikes.

I'm barely an amateur historian, but my understanding is that what saved the world during the Cold War was MAD, and the knowledge that all parties were rational actors and very much wanted to be alive.

Can we say the same for Putin right now?

Maybe Vlad is in a charitable mood and will turn over St. Petersberg to Belarus since they have been such a good companion =0P

Maps as they existed on Feb 1 2022 for the real world did not match what the maps Putin had planned for Feb 1 2023.

I view this as a one-way street. The West sees that any aggression on their behalf could trigger a Nuclear Strike. Where as Vlad probably sees this as a suicide mission. He will either have all his demands met or he will bring the world down with him.

He's calling the West's bluff here in regards to using nukes as an offensive measure.

I'll be honest, that doesn't strike me as it's being described like a Reagan moment or that he just forgot. It looked more like he was listening to something, acknowledged someone on the video call (you can see them on the screen in one cut), and gave an answer or update. I wouldn't be surprised if he had an earpiece in to be able to hear those on the call. Doesn't seem off to me.
