WEAR A ****ING MASK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Experimental and epidemiological data support community masking to reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2. The prevention benefit of masking is derived from the combination of source control and personal protection for the mask wearer. The relationship between source control and personal protection is likely complementary and possibly synergistic[SUP]14[/SUP], so that individual benefit increases with increasing community mask use. Further research is needed to expand the evidence base for the protective effect of cloth masks and in particular to identify the combinations of materials that maximize both their blocking and filtering effectiveness, as well as fit, comfort, durability, and consumer appeal. Adopting universal masking policies can help avert future lockdowns, especially if combined with other non-pharmaceutical interventions such as social distancing, hand hygiene, and adequate ventilation.

SARS-CoV-2 infection is transmitted predominately by respiratory droplets generated when people cough, sneeze, sing, talk, or breathe. CDC recommends community use of masks, specifically non-valved multi-layer cloth masks, to prevent transmission of SARS-CoV-2.

Wisconsin reported 92 COVID-10 deaths for November 17. The largest single day total before that was 66, and that came one day last week. 92 deaths in a single day is a 40% increase over that previous high mark.

It took five months for the pandemic to claim 1000 lives in Wisconsin, with that dubious threshold crossed on August 11. 3 months later and another 1700+ have succumbed. So in all this time we have apparently learned nothing.

The only positive news is the % of infections versus tests done has gone down for 5 straight days, even if only slightly. In fact it might be statistically insignificant or based on factors other than a true lessening of the reach of the virus and new infections. On 11/11 the positivity rate was 36.3% and on 11/16 it was down to 35.4%.

I still expect a lot of grim news out of Wisconsin in the next 6 weeks. Deaths lag infections and hospitalizations by 10 days to 3 weeks. We're almost certain to see numbers similar to what were released this morning. Over 700 died in October and already barely more than halfway through November over 700 more have already died. I can't imagine we'll ring in the new year without having reached 4000 deaths in Wisconsin.

I also continue to test positive for COVID-19 as of yesterday, having received my 3rd positive test in 4 weeks after the initial negative test in late September. I guess I am part of the problem...

If they were actually smart, making their customers a lot more comfortable, they would take notes from the hair cutting industry- who get to remain open. Why? Masks.

If they managed to replicate what Hair Salons can do, none of this would be happening, as cases would not be easily traced to restaurants.

The WHOLE reason they are closing is that there's a spike in cases AND many can be traced to restaurants. Just science speaking. Not rocket level science and engineering. Just basic observational science.

I mean, it’s next to, if not impossible, for people (customers) to keep their masks on the entire time while at a restaurant/bar. Eating and drinking require having the mask down for decent periods of time, unless living in the South means I’m not caught up on the latest mask designs out there. All that exposure time amongst nearly every person in the restaurant, it’s likely not there as much as other places. You don’t ever need your mask down for hair salons. One of my wife’s best friends is our hair stylist. He’s lost a handful of customers over refusing to let them have no mask or mask down. He doesn’t want to lose his license. He relies on those customers for a livelihood, but his license more. He’s not stupid. Other than enforcing no mask at the door, how do you enforce mask down inside? “Sir, I see that you’re currently not either eating nor drinking anything, nor do I suspect you’ll be in the next 5 seconds- please mask up”, says the waiter, relying on tips for her job.

1,615 deaths yesterday – the highest single day for deaths since July 30[SUP]th[/SUP] and the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] highest since May 15[SUP]th[/SUP]. The current 7-day average for deaths of 1,188 is the highest since May 24[SUP]th[/SUP]. That would translate to 408k dead over a full year, and even as such the country is now on pace for 306k deaths by EOY.

Good Lord.

For the MN folks, nothing new if you've been following the upward trend in positive cases but here are some of the recent PCR numbers from the one MN testing laboratory I'm affiliated with.

Avg # Daily Tests Avg % Positivity

September: 3370 3.67 %

October: 5830 4.90 %

November to date: 6868 10.25 %

Be safe, be well.

True.

But that does not prevent restaurants in being creative to find solutions to a problem, so that they can stay open. Barriers between tables, for example. It's not as if people are going to ignore the fact that restaurants spread the virus just because you need to uncover your mouth to eat. They still spread the virus.

Find a solution.

Can't just keep killing people just to make money.

I agree with your last sentence. To be honest, I’m not even certain restaurants are capable of providing safe indoor dining right now. Not saying they shouldn’t try while they’re allowed to stay open. I haven’t eaten inside a restaurant since February, so I couldn’t even tell you what all of those changes would entail. I’m assuming an upgraded, high-quality ventilation system would be important, if the restaurant could afford it and didn’t already have one.

You must be terrified to go out in public then considering you’re likely a 400 pound internet troll that lives in your moms basement.

What some people out there are failing to grasp is the overwhelming majority of trump supporters believe masks don't work. Some even believe they make things worse. And since we don't want to appear to be piling on just one side, there are even some who did not support trump who doubt the efficacy of masks.

The poster BassAle quoted sounds an awful lot like my union members. 75% supported trump, 2/3rds believe the coronavirus was and is a hoax (yes, still, even though 3 months ago they said it would disappear on 11-4-20) and none routinely wear a mask.
What do all these people have in common? They are stupid and they decry education, even sometimes to the point of mocking someone merely for BEING educated.

In one of my shops members objected to the elevation of a particular person to a supervisory position. Why? Because he has a Bachelors Degree. Not only do they think his education is meaningless and does not make him an effective manager (and they could be right about that) they actually think it DETRACTS from his ability to do the job. Education is for wimps and fags and socialists. If you don't hunt, change your own oil and consider any formal schooling beyond a GED worthy of pursuit, you are suspect in the extreme in their minds.

This is the America we live in in 2020 and why I believe it will not get better. It does not take a majority of the population to be idiots to bring us down.

We've been out a few times- one thing that I think helped would be barriers- but, as you allude to, it would need matched with air flow to prevent mixing as much as possible.

But my real gut suggests that the core problem with restaurants isn't what they are doing, but what the patrons are doing- as in going out in mixed groups. Which just expands your exposure from your immediate family to all of the immediate families. If you meet multiple sets of alternating people over the incubation period of the virus, well, the odds are clear what happens. How to prevent mixed parties? No idea. But given that masks are not required at a table, and all of the other protections restaurants do are pretty effective (spacing mostly)- it seems like a significant source of cross pollinating the virus.

It’s absolutely the customers. I have no doubt most restaurants and their staff are doing everything they’re supposed to do. Most obviously don’t want to get shut down either.
For Kentucky, I think Beshear is going to announce further restaurant/bar restrictions, possibly closures, today at his afternoon press conference.

It's been this way for a long while. My first paying job (back in the '80s) was working for my church's "local missions" program, where we fixed up people's houses (roofs, painting, etc) for free. The director was an ex-contractor who had worked a lot of construction, but had also gone to college. He said that when he worked construction, he would intentionally leave college off his resume because he didn't want it to be known on the construction sites - he said it made it almost impossible to make friends with the other workers. On one job, the supervisor pulled him aside and said, "I just wanted to let you know not to worry - we noticed the gap in your resume and it's totally okay. We hire a lot of people with felonies, so it's fine with us that you've spent time in jail." Think about that - having gone to jail was more socially acceptable than having gone to college!

Beshear closes not only bars and restaurants, he closes K-12 schools starting 11/23 and last at least until 12/7 for elementary schools, 1/4/21 for middle/high schools.

Walz drops the hammer.

Holy ****.

No gatherings outside of your household of any kind regardless of indoor/outdoor and regardless of social distancing or masks. Only a few exceptions. FOR A MONTH.

No bars, no restaurants, no gyms, no youth sports. Barbershops ok. Weddings ok, receptions not ok. Funerals ok.
