ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

Re: ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

If Ren is Han and Leia's daughter, you've completely lost me. I'd rather see it be someone completely new (a new Anakin) or Obi Wan's grandchild.

I could see that if one were to make a "cool story" in isolation from the rest of the canon. Perhaps with Disney in charge instead of Lucas it may play out that way.

Lucas seemed to be a bit of a slavish follower of Joseph Campbell's rules: he didn't "merely" want to make a cool story, he was trying to create a full-blown mythology. If you look at the whole sequence of stories from the perspective of myth, then Ren and Ben just about "have to be" siblings. Especially if/as VII - IX are a re-telling of IV - VI on another plane (in which the errors made by principal characters in IV - VI are avoided by the next generation).

My guess is that VIII starts with an extended flashback. IV Luke --> VIII Ren, IV Obi-wan --> VIII Luke. "Tell me about my parents and my background." "Okay, here you go."

I wonder if part of the reason The Phantom Menace has such a bad reputation is because The Attack of the Clones was so terrible?

Had the theory about Jar-Jar Binks being a secret Sith Lord been on target and Lucas bailed on the follow-through because of negative publicity been true, who knows how much better Attack might have been had not Count Dooku been pasted in at the last minute in place of Jar Jar?

Something that was in the Lucas-approved books that got lost in the movies was how Obi-Wan learned to come back as a Force spirit after physical death. Supposedly he learned that from Qui Gon.

No. TPM is as awful as everyone remembers it to be. Just because AotC was as bad or worse, doesn't redeem TPM in any way. It still has the same vapid and "Rube Goldberg-ian" plot, the same wooden acting from the adults, the same kid acting from the kid, and the same uber-obnoxious and borderline offensive Jar Jar character that we all loathe.

Re: ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

The Phantom Menace sucked cause it was a cartoon made to sell toys. It had potential, and it could probably be edited to be better but no Clones had zero to do with it.

Re: ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

I don't think Ren can be a Solo given I'm not under the impression she was separated from her family at early enough of an age for her and Leia to not recognize each other. I could be remembering details incorrectly for to support my finding a flaw in that theory.

Re: ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

Slap Shot, it's Rey and not Ren whose parents are up for debate.

The Phantom Menace ... was a cartoon .... It had potential, and it could probably be edited to be better.

A well-made cartoon can be fun. Yeah, the pod race was completely implausible and totally ridiculous, but it was better than most Saturday morning fare.

Yes, typo. My thought process remains.

In that case, I agree. I don't think she's a Solo either. While she was handed over to Unkar Plutt (assuming that was him in the movie and not another of his species), Rey was old enough to have an idea of what her parents would like. Aging some 14-15 years (she's 19 at the time of the movie), it's possible she wouldn't recognize them on site, but doubtful. Also, Leia would've had more of a response as her mother than she showed upon Rey's arrival at the Resistance base after the Starkiller base battle if she were in fact Rey's mother.

If she's related to the Skywalker clan at all it's through Luke, but I'm really hoping they're not related at all. With a galaxy full of billions or trillions of beings, more than just the one family can fit into the central narrative in this movie series.

I'm with you, I want Rey to be the dawn of a new lineage important to the universe via strength in the force, more of an Anakin of the next generation, versus just another skywalker.

Re: ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

I am fine with it either way (hell I liked the weird idea I read where she was a Palpatine) but I just for some reason hate the idea of her being a Kenobi. That seems like a total Lucas move where things are connected for no reason and makes little to no sense. (not to mention the mental gymnastics you have to play just to make it work with the current canon)

If she is Luke's daughter it has pluses and minuses, and if she is just some new breed of force sensitive people that does as well.

maybe have her descended from Qui Gon's lineage?

even better, she is Qui Gon, reincarnated as a female, and just doesn't know it yet!

or someone was messing around with the clone-making equipment and she is somebody's clone (Shmi Skywalker? a clone of Anakin's mother?? remember that Shmi said she didn't think Anakin had a father?)

I am not at all saying that I "want" her to be Ren's brother (REn vs REy?) just that it would fit Lucas' idea of symmetry really well.
