ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

Re: ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

Dillo brought up a long shot theory: Rey is Obi-Wan's grandkid.

Also, what was with the old guy in the beginning? Maybe HE'S the dad/granddad of Rey. I was too jacked up to fully take in that first scene.

I brought up her being a Kenobi to my buddy...we both thought it was possible but would be a stretch. As for the old guy...no idea.

I know I'll see it again in theaters, to take in the nuances. Between the excitement of the movie finally being here and wondering what they were going to do with it...I'm sure I missed some small things.

The old guy did say something that implied he knew something...and of course the map he had...

How'd he get the map? Why was HE looking for Luke? Things like that I'm sure are somewhat hidden in that first scene.

Re: ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

I liken this movie to the Star Trek Generations one, where it goes from Kirk to Picard. It's a new story/chapter of a saga, but it's still the same in many ways. A handoff, if you will. We get a couple of the old characters, but they are there just to transition to a whole new set of people. Soon the old ones will phase out (or just up and die) and we'll "forget" about them.

Definitely...and Harrison Ford wanted Han killed off in Return of the Jedi so it made sense.

Still mad he didn't die in a more honorable way, considering his career choice. Go out fighting, not getting killed by a coward.

He got killed doing what the love of his life wanted him to do, save their son. Their whole life was destroyed (and Luke went into hiding) when their son turned...

There is no honorable death for a smuggler, but any father would gladly die to try and save his son.

He did have some key parts in that whole taking down the Empire thing, though. That's pretty honorable. And he saved Luke. ;)

I get the son thing, for sure. Going into that part of the movie, I thought one of two things:

1. It will end in an unresolved confrontation, due to some explosion/distraction that will prematurely end the meeting of Han and Ren.
2. It will end with Ren basically disowning Han/Leia/good side and re-enforcing his commitment to the Dark Side.

Did NOT expect it to happen the way it did.

Now mind you, despite my peeve at this turn of events, I do NOT mean to detract from the movie whatsoever. It's a small botheration and hateration in the big picture. :)

Re: ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

They had 3 kids Jacen and Jaina (twins) and Anakin. I believe Luke had a kid named Ben.

edit: The lightsaber...if you listen to the ET looking lady she says it took a lot of effort to recover the saber. It probably fell into a chute like Luke did but it may not have. Im sure it will be explained...

Yes, those are the names, and that's my point. Were they giving the old EU book readers the big FU by naming Leia's kid Ben in this movie? We'll never know because that's not something anyone on the staff would openly state, just that it caught my attention during the show and thought I'd toss out the idea here since I know two or three others on here have read a number of the books, too.

I have ZERO knowledge compared to you guys on the books/etc, but aren't the movies pretty much ignoring the "extended" stories that the books have and such?

What's not honorable about dying in an attempt to save your son from continuing to make a monster of himself?

Also, I like the fact that Ren is tortured on his path through the Dark side. It (unbeknownst to Ren) mirrors Vader's ending in Jedi so well, a man he's been purposefully emulating and worshiping throughout the movie and for number of some years prior to these events.

Also, I like the way they introduced Supreme Leader Snoke. The holo-feed of his image remotely to the base/planet feels like the power move the Emperor used on Vader, sending his apprentice/bi+ch out on his dirty errands while playing the all-knowing, all-powerful architect and master from the throne room.

His son basically "sucker-punched" him, although with more severe effect. If they got into a fight overall, and Han died? Ok, cool. Han was blindsided. I didn't like it. So be it. *shrug*

They are, and that's my point. The franchise heads made this specific change to thumb their noses at those die-hards of the old novel series readers who refuse to accept the fact that their "real Star Wars stories" are dead and gone. Seriously, there's a larger band of these people who refuse to let go of it.

I just never got why some would go all ga-ga over sidestories, or whatever they are considered. I assume Lucas gave the books his blessing?

It felt like the way of the Dark side to me, to pull your enemy in close and deliver the kill without him seeing it coming.

"It's a trap!"

HOW DARE YOU USE THE IMMORTAL WORDS OF ADMIRAL AKBAR IN THIS INSTANCE! ;) :D

Can we sic Ren on C3P0 next? Please? I know I'll get roasted for this, but C3P0 is worse than Jar Jar.

Lucas personally reviewed the first three, the Thrawn Trilogy. Back in the early 1990s, he even said that these are to be considered Episodes VII-IX. After that, the authors had only the supervision of a team of book editors that didn't seem to much care about the quality of the books as some were really bad while others were truly solid.

Gotcha. Thanks for the info.

BTW, I can't take Ren seriously anyways, after I saw him without a mask. /WelcomeBackKotter

But he looks so much like a combination of Han and Leia!

Have you not seen Adam Driver in any roles prior to this?
