You Guys Again? UNH Wildcats @ UMD Bulldogs

Re: You Guys Again? UNH Wildcats @ UMD Bulldogs

In the smae way that teams play up to the other teams potential, I think that UNH slowed down UMD's speed and took them out of their normal rythem(sp)...UNH played hard but they were just to weak on defense this year...they missed the size and presence of Joyce and Bellamy, with the loss of Birchard.....Sheary has the heart but not the size and Chappell is a freshman, Brock as well....I love 'em and thank them for a great effort and fun year...I will so miss Paton , Sisk, Cahill, and Long

Just got home from the game - I have seen UMD play much better this season but a win is a win. I wasn't much impressed with UNH either - I would guess this is not their "A" game. I gotta say Friddy is one tough young women. She took a check that appeared to dislocate her shoulder again with about 30 seconds to play and stayed out there playing with 1 arm. Go Dogs -

For someone that claims to have watched hockey for 35 years you have no idea what to watch.

Birchard has been missed you are correct on that, however, sherry was the best d one the ice today. Several tape to tape passes were missed today and in turn the puck went right back into the zone. The issue this year was that the team could not score .... probably not a defensive issue.

They scored ok when Birchard was back on D and Horn helped them fill out 2 good scoring lines. Losing Birchard was HUGE. I give UNH a lot of credit for hanging in today. I honestly thought UMD would win fairly comfortably and was proud of UNH's effort today. Congrats to UMD for moving on, and best of luck in the future to UNH's seniors.

Re: You Guys Again? UNH Wildcats @ UMD Bulldogs

sorry Mary, but if the D can't get the puck up so there is a transition game, then there will be no offense....when the forwards have to help get the puck out of the defensive zone, there will be no offense....when the D has in-zone turnovers that negate any forward flow, there willbe no offense....I say all this with great respect for our ladies, but ignoring the situation will not help

Re: You Guys Again? UNH Wildcats @ UMD Bulldogs

UNH played gritty and I think that game could have gone either way. UMD did not look good to me at all, very nervous, a little bit of youth finally taking hold out there. Both goaltenders played great, and after seeing Patton play for the first time and already having seen Bendus and of course, RatyN I hope UNH get at least the Kaz. That kid was good.

Normally, I think this is an actual responsibility for forwards...a task they're charged with as a routine...that doesn't really translate to "no offense" as a given.

Re: You Guys Again? UNH Wildcats @ UMD Bulldogs

I just posted this on the UMD thread.. (was at the UMD men's playoff game tonight)... UMD switched Katie Wilson and Saara Tuominen's center spots after the first period, I think to shadow/match Paton's line, and the Dogs had some trouble with creating any positive flow when they went on the defensive.

I was on the wrong side of the ice to see the UNH goal to say whether there was 'luck' involved in it.

I agree with this 100%. Loosing Bellamy and Joyce to graduation last year really hurt the D core. Brock and Chappell will come along with time but I did see a different team this year more due to movement from back to front than anything. Even with Birchard at D (she carries the puck too much) offense is not generated from the defense. And Birch's plus minus is proof of that. UNH has to find another Bellamy and Garland. Not easy skates to fill and having 2 on the roster at the same time is not easily done.

I thought the game yesterday was a lackluster first a better second and survival of the third. UMD was just ok in my opinion. Certainly not the team of the last 2 years. UNH worked hard and they looked exhausted at the end of the game. I am certainly hoping that Kelly Paton receives the Kaz on Saturday it is well deserved.

Mary I do think that Sherry was the best D in the game against UMD. But still had trouble moving the puck simply from the back to the front. I agree with the tape to tapes especially in the third. This game was just not a typical UNH UMD hockey game. It was passive. Paton was a fireplug and Long works hard. What I missed from UNH all year was the deceptive passes of Bellamy that would create grade A scoring chances. When you don't have a half dozen goal scorers you need someone that will create opportunities. With a 2-1 game all UNH needed was 2 of those special plays and it becomes a 3-2 game.

Blais certainly had her chances. There was a lot of action right in front of the net, lots of bouncing pucks. I was surprised they didn't put more points on the board.

I noticed a few months ago that the DECC glass is very clean.. and really need to get down to shoot through the glass the way you did!

Re: You Guys Again? UNH Wildcats @ UMD Bulldogs

Shooting at ice level is a pain in the butt. The DECC does have relatively clean glass, but crappy lights are even crappier through a sheet of plexiglass. It's been fun the past couple of months to try shooting hockey, but I miss just sitting and enjoying the game, too.

I still watch and enjoy the game while shooting, though sometimes I get caught up in the game and watch more than shoot ;) Or even worse sometimes get caught up b.s.'ing and watching and go a whole period with very few pictures :D

Schmoeseph...Once again, excellent job behind the camera...nice clean shots...tons of action...I especially like the one of Blais getting dumped behind the net with the stick between her legs...beautiful shot...thanks a lot.
