I'm pretty sure Blood, Hextall and Malone have more penalty minutes this season than all of Yale combined. Also, just briefly looking at the numbers I see that while we had 305 penalties called on us, there were only 213 power plays given. The WCHA seems to call a lot of coincidental penalties in an attempt to keep things from getting out of the officials hands. One more comforting sign (for we Sioux fans) is our PK has looked pretty stellar during our end-of-season stretch.
On paper, the one thing that worries me about Yale is how even when they lose they're still out-shooting their opponents most of the time. It looks like they put up close to 50 shots on goal in quite a few games this year. I can only find a handful of games where Eidsness faced over 30 shots, and most of those games were Losses.
What I see favoring the Sioux in this match up is what I think has consistently been the factor in big games throughout the season: depth in scoring. UND has a slight edge in this department in addition to a couple of really hot players right now. Backman out of the Yale lineup, it looks like they're missing a big part of their offense. Have any role players stepped their game up to fill that void?
It also looks like Yale played 3 goalies pretty evenly throughout the season, but the freshman Maricic actually saw the most ice time. Do you roll with the senior Blase going into the playoffs?
