Yale Hockey 2010

Re: Yale Hockey 2010

UND will pound the living **** out of you. Their forecheck is relentless and generates a good portion of their offense off of the the turnovers it creates. UND is a very physical team with good skill around the net. Really the only weakness they have is in Eidsness imho, who has been decent lately.

It will be interesting to see what kind of game the CCHA/HEA officials call. If they call it tight UND could be in the box a lot as they are the most physical WCHA team I've seen in quite a while and the WCHA refs are know for letting them play.

Overall don't let the fact this was a 4th Place WCHA team fool you. It's a pretty solid hockey team that has as good a chance of winning it all as anyone.

This is an honest opinion for some who has seen this team play 10 times this season.

One advantage Yale may have is that even though UND played 10 more games than Yale, they had almost double the penalty minutes in a league in which they "let them play". Also, In ten less games Yale has scored the same number of goals as UND. The GAA is the thing that has me worried as well as the backchecking on Yales part. I can't wait for the game. Thanks for the UND unbiased review.

Re: Yale Hockey 2010

Totally agree, LT. Yale's got to hope for really strong PP and minimal mistakes on their part. But it'll be great to see the Sioux live. I hope they wear black, but I'm guessing those are their road unis.

I guess the real hope is for Yale to play Yale hockey, not like that debacle at Harbor Yard last year.

Re: Yale Hockey 2010

Re: Yale Hockey 2010

Gopher Freak pretty much nailed it with the Sioux synopsis.

Since UND is the higher seed in the Yale game, they will be wearing white.
That said, I totally dig the black jerseys. They are killer. :)

I believe it's totally possible for Yale to beat UND. If anything is likely to hold UND back it's Eidsness in goal. He isn't terrible, but is probably the weakest goaltender a contending UND team has had in some time. If Yale is a fast as some say, they probably have a chance as UND had some trouble with SCSU's speed guys at times on Saturday night. UND's d-men are not that fast, however they REALLY clear out the front of the net and make up for the poor rebound control of Eidness so you won't get too many good looks down low.

Yale will need to win this game in transition, and long breakout passes won't cut it against UND as they clog up the lanes too well.

This game seems like it will be an all out shootout.

I'm pretty sure Blood, Hextall and Malone have more penalty minutes this season than all of Yale combined. Also, just briefly looking at the numbers I see that while we had 305 penalties called on us, there were only 213 power plays given. The WCHA seems to call a lot of coincidental penalties in an attempt to keep things from getting out of the officials hands. One more comforting sign (for we Sioux fans) is our PK has looked pretty stellar during our end-of-season stretch.

On paper, the one thing that worries me about Yale is how even when they lose they're still out-shooting their opponents most of the time. It looks like they put up close to 50 shots on goal in quite a few games this year. I can only find a handful of games where Eidsness faced over 30 shots, and most of those games were Losses.

What I see favoring the Sioux in this match up is what I think has consistently been the factor in big games throughout the season: depth in scoring. UND has a slight edge in this department in addition to a couple of really hot players right now. Backman out of the Yale lineup, it looks like they're missing a big part of their offense. Have any role players stepped their game up to fill that void?

It also looks like Yale played 3 goalies pretty evenly throughout the season, but the freshman Maricic actually saw the most ice time. Do you roll with the senior Blase going into the playoffs?

In my oppinion I think that Blase will play. I thought he played pretty well during their playoff series despite the losses. I wouldn't be too shocked though if Allain went with Maricic.

One of Yale's biggest strengths is their depth. Although Backman's injury hurts alot, they still have almost 2 first lines. They almost always roll 4 lines, and even the third line can score. Yale has really only played 3 games without Backman so they haven't quite gotten used to playing without him. Also I've heard that one of their D-men Kevin Peel is injured and may miss this game.Yale's Powerplay has been somewhat affected by the loss of Backman, they went 3-17 last weekend, only 18%

Re: Yale Hockey 2010

Yale's a team that outshot Wisconsin 42-22 at the Kohl Center....of course that was with a healthy Sean Backman.

I think a healthy Yale team beats North Dakota, but taking Sean BAckman off of Yale is the equivalent of taking a Gregoire or Kristo off of North Dakota.

It's a huge loss!

In my opinion, if Yale or any team for that matter puts 50 shots on Eidsness, it's going to be a long night for UND. Although, UND's power play (which was dominant on saturday) could be the great equalizer if Yale gets that many shots. But if I were to bet on it, I'd bet UND takes more penalties. They have did a great job of walking the line between legal and illegal this past weekend, but my guess is whoever calls this game calls it tighter than the WCHA refs.

This has all the makings of a very interesting game. There are aspects of Yale's game that could cause big problems for UND. Conversely, I don't believe Yale has seen anyone with UND's forecheck or anyone near as physical. Wisconsin is nowhere near as physical as UND. This could really be a culture shock for both.

Re: Yale Hockey 2010

Echoing what has been said upthread, UND is not your typical figure-skating contact-fearing WCHA team, they will absolutely play physically. Still, Yale's solid even without Backman (I think the loss to Brown says more about how on-fire Mike Clemente was than anything else) and hopefully you guys can pull it out.

Re: Yale Hockey 2010

Cornell doesn't have a forecheck. They just play D.
Anyways Yale has routinely crushed Cornell the last few years.
Cornell does not forecheck aggressively.

Yale has crushed Cornell precisely once in the last 3 years. The other games have been OTs, 1-goal wins, ENG wins, and one 2-goal game where Yale scored in the last minute of the game. Oh, and a Cornell win and a tie.
