Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

I hear ya, Ralph. Having been a Yale fan for 35 years, the constant heartbreak occasioned by the fact that our best teams still weren't clearly better than Cornell or Harvard, and often clearly worse, was just a fact of life. IMO, what Keith Allain has done in recruiting is to recruit a team which matches up well with Cornell and let the rest of the chips fall where they may. (Harvard is mostly self-destruction.) As grim as the Yale-Cornell history is, and, irrespective of today's result, it's just worth reminding people that the last time Yale has lost to Cornell is November 2007. The record:
November 9, 2007 1-2.
January 26, 2008 @ Cornell: 2-2 Tie
January 23, 2009 @ Cornell 4-3
February 27, 2009 4-2
March 21, 2009 ECAC Finals 5-0
November 13, 2009 4-2
February 13, 2010 @Cornell 2-1 OT
November 19, 2010 @Cornell 4-2
February 6, 2011 5-2

I love having national recognition for the Bulldogs. I love three straight NCAA trips after none in my lifetime. But matching up well with Cornell, at last, is its own reward -- win or lose today.

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

I love seeing how fans of UNO and RPI suddenly become Yale fans for a day. The only thing better would have been if Brown were on the bubble and Onion Man had to root for us.

Hey being a Yale fan for a day works for me!

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

...Bridgeport bid for the ECACs and lost this time. The ECAC should rethink their disastrous AC decision and re-approach Bridgeport for next year.

I would be in favor of Bridgeport.

Full disclosure: I live in Fairfield County about 30 mins from Harbor Yard and we are Yale hockey fans.

Notwithstanding, I think Bridgeport has a lot going for it. The arena is relatively new and congenial. It seats about 8000: not too large and not too small. The parking is decent. It is proximate to the New York metro area, which must (I imagine) contain the largest absolute number of alumni of ECAC Hockey schools of any metro area where the tournament could be held. I appreciate that there are a lot of alums of the New York schools in the Albany area, but I wonder if the absolute numbers in New York metro aren't much greater. It is 25 miles from the Quinnipiac campus and 20 miles from Yale. On the negative side, traffic on I-95 and the Merritt Parkway around Bridgeport on a Friday afternoon is horrendous.

Fairfield County is quite a little hockey hot bed. There are innumerable youth and high school and prep teams in the area and "hockey dads and moms" all over the place. Yale sells out these days, the Sound Tigers get sorta decent support and Sacred Heart is, well, ...up and coming. Harbor Yard is 5 miles from Sacred Heart's campus. In fact this afternoon the CT state high school championships will be played at the Whale. In previous years this has been a sell out event.

A number of college players and pros come out of the area, some well known and some journeymen. They include Brian Leetch (Chesire), Ted and Chris Drury (Trumbull), Ryan Shannon (Darien), Max Pacioretty (New Canaan), Jamie Sifers (Shelton) and Hugh Jessiman (Greenwich). There have been plenty of Fairfield and New Haven County kids on Yale and ECAC rosters recently including Sean Backman (Greenwich) who starred for Yale over the past few years and John Emmons, Jeff Dwyer and Christian Jensen (all New Canaan) a few years before that. This year's Yale roster lists four players who grew up in the NY metro area and a number of others who played for a prep program in CT. If you include the CT preps, there are many, many more players on ECAC rosters.

While the city of Bridgeport has little to offer, New Haven (with restaurants and museums) is only 20 minutes away and even New York City (80 minutes on Metro North) is not out of reach.

We'll see how full Harbor Yard is next week for the NCAA Regionals. I bet way more full than Boardwalk Hall, but that's probably not saying much.

Another venue to be considered would be Hartford, this is more centrally located for the teams and is a decent, if maybe too large facility. There are a number of bars and restaurants within walking distance of the venue. The ease of access for all ECAC schools is also a plus. I love Bridgeport as a venue, I just wish it were in New Haven!

On a side note it was a pleasure meeting up with Yale84 and cornellgradyalefan at Atlantic City yesterday. I had a little too much fun with some buddies from New Haven but it was worth it. Had a nice conversation with the Trentowski family as well as Brendan Mason who is genuinely nice young man, I hope we see him next week. I also had a short conversation with Coach Allain who was very pleased with the way Yale played. I mentioned while watching Dartmouth and Cornell, that I would rather see Cornell win because Yale matches up better against them, but that I could not help rooting for Dartmouth.:D

From what I understand Harbor Yard is close to selling out next weekend.

That must have been a lot of fun you had, because I've been in Westchester County since Thursday.

Go Yale! You are the bright spot in the ECAC!!!!! Take it to the Big Red! Get the job done.........and congrats on a great season, and a great game against us in the semis. You deserved it.

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

Was Yale the first recognized established college hockey team? or was Johns Hopkins or another team that is no longer in existance.

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

Cornell did turn into goons, but your team has just made the RPI crowd very happy. Thank you.

This game is just plain entertaining. Anytime Cornell loses, it's just funny.

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

Interesting for Yale, might not be playing RIT/AF winner with the following senario (thanks to Priceless):

If Western/BC/Denver win, then UNO and CC are #4 seeds, while DU and UND are #1 seeds. What does this mean? Yale will have to play either UNO or CC, while North Dakota most likely gets the Atlantic Hockey winner.

Yale claims to be, but as usual with these things, it's disputed. The Yale-Johns Hopkins game is generally accepted as the first game between two college hockey teams, but Yale, Johns Hopkins and Minnesota had all formed teams and played either in Canada or other club teams in the US. The Minnesota claim was described by someone somewhere in the middle of FS23's "Best Teams of all Time" thread.

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

Like I said above: Allain recruited players to match up well with Cornell. I was in Albany two years ago and this is much worse.

Hartford or Bridgeport would be great choices. Hartford has more to offer with its bars and restaurants that surround the XL Center. The problem, though, is its way too big, which makes Bridgeport's Webster Bank Arena the perfect size (8k).

I wish New Haven had an arena too! I loved the Coliseum!

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

Best of luck to you guys...get an ECAC team at least in the Frozen Four already! It's been far too long

Considering the AHA winner beat Yale this year, it might not be such a bad thing for you guys if you were to avoid that matchup. CC and AFA are both A LOT better than they were early in the year when they played Yale. (No, I'm not discounting the fact that Yale has probably improved as well; I have seen them less though.) Either one would be a very interesting rematch, IMHO. However, if things go according to seeding, it will be Yale vs. AFA. #1 vs #16.
