World Soccer XXXI: Golden Generation?

From today's Boston Globe,
MONACO — UEFA is preparing a criminal complaint against FIFA President Gianni Infantino in Swiss courts for possible financial mismanagement over his failed plan to sell future World Cup profits to private investors.

The governing body of European soccer announced its intentions in court documents filed Thursday in the United States seeking access to possible evidence related to the sell-off plan, which was withdrawn after a furious backlash by UEFA and other global soccer leaders.

The move increases the pressure on Infantino, who is facing the biggest crisis in his 10 years as FIFA’s leader.

UEFA filed documents in a Manhattan court requesting discovery of potential evidence from the New York investment fund, Thrive Capital Management, founded by Josh Kushner — the younger brother of President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

UEFA also filed a request in a southern Florida district for authorization of discovery “in a foreign proceeding” against FIFA itself, which has offices in the Miami suburb of Coral Gables.

“UEFA and its counsel are contemplating a Swiss criminal proceeding against Infantino and possibly other FIFA officials for criminal mismanagement under Article 158 of the Swiss Criminal Code,” UEFA’s lawyers state in a 56-page document seen by The Associated Press.

The document suggests the $4.2 billion figure could be a “fraudulently off-market price promoted by Infantino for his own benefit.”

A bit under the radar but 16 year old Cavan Sullivan has been on a tear for Philadelphia since the World Cup break. In the last 8 games he has 6 goals and 5 assists. Philly has also gone from dead last to playoff contention in 10 games, mostly off the back of Sullivan.

He should be getting a USMNT call up in the next window this month but it remains to be seen.

Cavan Sullivan does indeed make the roster for the upcoming USMNT friendlies. If he appears he’ll be the second youngest player to ever appear for the USMNT behind Freddy Adu.

Not on the roster? Christian Pulisic. Is it because of injury or is it because Poch is finally tired of Pulisic’s BS of not taking tournaments like the Gold Cup seriously? Both seem to be in play.

Man City found guilty on 114 of 115 financial charges. Is this one of those “you owe the bank 20k, that’s your problem. You owe the bank 1B, that’s their problem” type scenarios?

How do you even punish this? There’s a points deduction, but that’s like 1,200 points based on prior sanctions handed out. And would just send them to the Championship. It looks like the PL can expel them, but then they’ll probably just end up in the Championship either way.

It's on appeal so see everyone in ten years when that's sorted out.

In CONCACAF Nations League play, Costa Rica blew a 3-0 lead and lost 4-3 to Curacao AT HOME.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Canada has to be one of the dirtiest teams in the region.

And that's saying something for CONCACAF.

US Soccer has announced the creation of the Arthur M Blank Crest Cup, a new national competition for women’s soccer. It’s basically a women’s Open Cup though at this point it’s only the professional teams from the NWSL and USL Super League, no amateur teams from the USLW for example.

It’s a long time coming but, historically a good portion of the WoSo community in the US has long resisted Cup competition over concerns about fixture congestion. Though this same attitude is reflected in the NWSL’s relative lack of success in CONCACAF and international competitions and is an understated issue for the league.

St. Louis City wins the US Open Cup in PKs versus Columbus.

It’s the first trophy for St. Louis City but the 11th USOC title won by a St. Louis team (first since 1988).

Fun fact: St. Louis supplied nearly half of the U.S. Men's National Team (including stars like Harry Keough and Frank Borghi) that pulled off the historic 1-0 upset against England in the 1950 FIFA World Cup.

In the early professional era from around 1900-1940, the St. Louis league was a dominant regional soccer league that used to beat up on the east coast, and St. Louis was the site of the US championship in 1920, 1922, 1924, 1929, 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1948, 1950, 1954, and 1957. These were the years the best soccer team in the US was a company team from Bethlehem Steel or the club team from Fall River, famous IINM for Lizzy Borden.

It’s fascinating that it took so long for St. Louis to have an MLS team, or really any professional team as they didn’t have any notable A-League/USL or women’s teams either. It’s not like the league was intentionally avoiding the city.

I thought it might be the case that St. Louis was so strong because it was the westernmost "real" city until the 50s, and then with the run to the coasts that took their dominance with them .

Oh no, St. Louis was dominant all the way into the 80’s. The Busch family were notable supporters of the game, they built the soccer complex near the city along with supporting a notable amateur and youth club (that won the Open Cup in 1988).

The stadium at the soccer complex also hosted a number of qualifying matches in the late 80’s and was a big part in the USMNT qualifying for Italy 1990.

That's interesting, thanks. I saw a passing reference to the Bilikens being good too.

I'm still tickled that St. Louis is, arguably, an even greater chess mecca than NYC, kinda like Almaty is. We had an Uber driver from Almaty and he said his JHS and HS had classes in it. Not clubs; classes. Even the dumbest kids play competently, like checkers here.

I learned awhile back that until well into the 70s, some zip codes of St. Louis and Cincinnati were still considered very prestigious addresses nationwide.
