World Soccer XXXI: Golden Generation?

Non-league Macclesfield produced the greatest shock in FA Cup history with a stunning and memorable performance to knock out holders Crystal Palace.

The hosts are ranked 117 places below Premier League side Palace, meaning this was the biggest upset in the competition of all time in terms of league places, but on the pitch that gap was non-existent as this was a deserved win for Macclesfield.

Has Crystal Palace blamed the turf field yet?

I haven't seen anything, but it seems to me they took it in the shorts like real men and moved on.
Huh, good for them. Most teams around the world are quick to blame artificial turf fields.

Macclesfield is a phoenix club BTW. You might remember the original club, Macclesfield Town, as the club where the supporters had to raise money for an emergency fund for their players and their players went on strike because they hadn’t been paid in months. They were in League Two at the time as well. They were relegated to the National League and eventually “wound up” in 2020 before some locals bought the assets and formed the new club.

I didn't know that. Good info.

AFCON final, Senegal was up 1-0 in stoppage time when Morocco gets awarded a penalty. Senegal walks off the pitch in protest for ten minutes, including a player posting on Snapchat they’re getting robbed. Finally come back out and Morocco misses the penalty, Senegal wins.

Classic AFCON.

The stories and videos coming out of the AFCON final are wild.

Of note, Morocco was the host for the tournament so keep that in mind.

Some stories post game:

Moroccan journalists walking out of the press conference when the Senegal manager came in.

Video of ball boys trying to take the towel by the net of the Senegalese goalkeeper and then chasing a Senegal player who was confronting said ball boys.

The classic “laser pointers in the eyes” of Senegal players.

Senegal player was quoted post game of accusing the Moroccans of poisoning the Senegal team’s food pregame. 3 Senegalese players were sent to the hospital, 2 pregame and 1 at halftime.

Though in CAF terms all of this is broadly referred to as “last weekend”.

In the interest of fairness, while there is video evidence of the two incidents I mentioned (the press conference and the ball boys), I would treat stories coming out with a some skepticism. There are a lot of Moroccan immigrants in Western Europe, especially Spain, and there is undoubtedly a fair amount of exaggeration and out right lying in some stories to benefit the agendas of far right European parties.

It took them 10 minutes to line up the right bribes? Losing their form....

I was watching the Copenhagen/Napoli CL group match and when Copenhagen tied the match on a pk a bunch of København (couldn't resist) fans in that end fired up flares. Those can't possibly be legal at a match can they?

They're not legal per se but they also don't seem to do much to prevent them from entering stadiums with them nor really punish people for lighting them.

In contrast, people have picked up pretty lengthy stadium bans for lighting one up in an MLS stadium.
