Re: World Soccer XXX: We Have Men Too!

Watching the coverage of the Sounders parade and celebrations showed one of the few bad things of the playoff timing.

Of the 14 players that played in the final, 11 weren’t able to be there, 10 due to international call ups and one due to a family medical issue (and the three that were there probably could’ve not been there as well).

Re: World Soccer XXX: We Have Men Too!

US v Canada Round 2 tonight in Orlando.

And it’s 3-0 US in the first half.

Don’t poke the bear Canada...

This happened and got called by the referee and I'm geeking out with excitement!

Let's explore Law 12!

An indirect free kick is awarded if a player:

commits any other offence, not mentioned in the Laws, for which play is stopped to caution or send off a player

and
Cautions for unsporting behaviour
There are different circumstances when a player must be cautioned for unsporting behaviour including if a player:

uses a deliberate trick to pass the ball (including from a free kick) to the goalkeeper with the head, chest, knee etc. to circumvent the Law, whether or not the goalkeeper touches the ball with the hands

What's the law designed to prevent? Time wasting?
Yes.

Keepers picking up a passback was legal until ~1992. The rule was implemented after the godawful 1990 World Cup and the lack of scoring.

What Davies was punished for was “circumventing the spirit of the law”. Basically you can’t use what he did as a loophole.

Re: World Soccer XXX: We Have Men Too!

Heh. Reminds me of when my travel team was doing a 5x5 drill on miniature goals, and the rule was that only headers counted. A lazy ball rolled near our goal, and we all backed away, since they couldn’t get to it with a head. Well, one of their players lay down next to the ball and nudged it over the line, looking like a beached walrus. Coach counted the goal - guess he never heard about “circumventing the spirit of the law.” :)

Re: World Soccer XXX: We Have Men Too!

the play they chose to run getting that indirect free kick was terrible...just kick roll it to your teammate and kick right at the goal, its difficult to defend and a much higher chance of scoring or getting a deflection to a teammate...

Re: World Soccer XXX: We Have Men Too!

Newcastle against Aston Villa on Monday, mook. Can the Magpies make it 3 in a row?

Either way, I'll be drinking heavily during the match.

Re: World Soccer XXX: We Have Men Too!

MLS already can't keep its best homegrown talent - does it really need to expand?

there are very few leagues in the world that aren't selling leagues...whats your point?
I can count the buying leagues on one hand.

Also consider how successful expansion has been. The quality of play has gone up despite repeated expansion and expansion teams have been more successful lately.

Nashville will be interesting, but Miami certainly should fall into the Atlanta/LAFC/NYCFC category

League Expansion is good...but they do have a problem with TV...it doesn't have enough pizzazz yet nationally to get much "non-local" followers...LAFC vs Galaxy seems to be one of the few matchups that had enough names/recognition to actually draw nationally
